However, it remains true that the first place to look for the origins of a new settler is nearby. > Huguenots and who settled in this precise area. As in the case of Thomas Blanchard of New England, the ultimate origin needn't be Huguenot just because of the French-sounding name. The close association with known Huguenots in this case would make it seem much more solid than the story for Thomas, but the time element has to be considered -- if the Huguenot settlement occurred much later, then there might not have been any association after all. > Benjamin, Sr.'s will filed in > Gates County, NC, asserts, "I, Benjamin, of Nansemond County, Virginia." That's always a good indication. > However, the Blanchards of Massachusetts > and those of VA/NC may have been related at an earlier point. Making transatlantic connections can be very difficult, especially in the case of single emigrants of unspecified age. The identification of Thomas Blanchard as a former resident in the parish of Goodworth Clatford rests on the variety of family connections he had in New England with people who show up in matching English records. Hi Folks!! Just a "feeler"...anyone know of an artist who signed his paintings "Antony Blanchard" ????????..Ernie....
I was forwarded a query dealing with Sarah Blanchard in the following text: In 'Historical and Genealogical Record of the First Settlers of Colchester County', [Nova Scotia] (1873) by Thomas Miller, on pg. 31, it states "Robert, the second son of Alexander and Sarah Miller, was born January 4th, 1828. He was a house-joiner, and removed to New Hampshire, U.S.; and was married there to Sarah Blanchard, of Watertown, Mass., U.S., Feb. 29th 1851, and died March 7th, 1852, aged 23 years." The following was found in the MA. State Archives by the query submitter. Marriage Registration Vol. 61, pg. 155: (29 Feb 1852) Robert MILLER, age 24, born in Nova Scotia, s/o Alexander MILLER; occupation - carpenter; married to Sarah A. BLANCHARD, age 21, born in New Hampshire, d/o M. BLANCHARD. Both Robert and Sarah were living in Watertown, MA. and were married there by Methodist clergyman Rev. M. DWIGHT. It was the first marriage for both. I was also sent the following in the belief this could be the above mentioned Robert due to place and age and date (although the year is different). Death Registration Vol. 76, pg. 124: (7 March 1853) Robert MILLER, age 24, born in Maine, parents names - unknown; occupation - carpenter; marital status - married; cause of death - consumption; place of death - Watertown, MA. ---- I was wondering if anyone was familiar with and /or could tell me more about Sarah. Yours in searching, Rannie Sarah. 1852 m. Watertown, MA. 06.10.1998. Robert {Miller}. 1852 m. Watertown, MA. 06.10.1998.

On the other hand, there is no documented birth date for Thomas anywhere, nor any record of his age at any point. The date and place of birth are conjectural only. Any discrepancies there are merely differences of opinion on a matter that hasn't been settled. > Is it possible that more than one Thomas > Blanchard migrated to America in the early to mid 1600's? As a matter of fact, there were two. Thomas Sr had a son Thomas, who was baptized at Goodworth Clatford on 1623 Oct 12, and who died in Charlestown, Mass in the winter of 1650/1, as shown by probate records. (Thomas Jr has been discussed before.) John

I've been meaning to look it up, but haven't gotten around to it yet. John Chandler P.S. When I comment that something has been discussed in the group before, that is in large part intended as a signal to Fletch that the subject need not be added to the index database, i.e., an explanation of why I didn't add such index lines to my posting and why they may not be necessary for the posting I'm responding to. It is not intended as a scolding to anyone for not knowing about the prior discussion, but it certainly is a hint that anyone interested in the subject should take the trouble to look at the archives. With this in mind, I note that the children of Nathaniel have been discussed here before.

I came across some information, courtesy of Family Tree Maker, that confused me. I have a Thomas Blanchard being born in France in1594, d. may 21 1654. The info i have says June 1654. Next I have a Thomas Blanchard b. 1592 in England d. 1954. And yet again a thomas being born in England in 1598 d. 1554. This is a bit confusing, so any calrification would be great. I have looked throught he roosweb archives, and there is a lot of good info, but again, there are many things in htere that dont add up. Is it possible that more than one Thomas Blanchard migrated to America in the early to mid 1600's? Thanks again Daniel Blanchard

Daniel wrote: > As far as the child of Agnes, my records show the name > being Brent, I know her maiden name was Bent, either way the child only lived > for a matter of days and the point is moot. I must point out that there are no contemporary records of the voyage itself, unless you count the carrier's statement for the Bent party (excluding the Blanchards) being conveyed from Andover to London before embarking. In particular, there is no evidence that a child was born on the voyage, and no passenger list either at the departure or the arrival. As I mentioned, there was a daughter born in 1638, and she is quite possibly the child who died on the voyage, but we'll never know for sure -- it might instead have been one of the other unaccounted for children born at Goodworth Clatford. > this list for a short while, and am not privy to all that has been exchanged. All of the Blanchard-L discussions have been and are even now being archived. The archives are open to all, even those who have not subscribed. You can search the archives via the web at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Enter the name of the list (e.g., BLANCHARD-L) and away you go. The archives are full of information about Blanchards all over. There are also some unanswered queries from many people about a variety of Blanchards, so there is every reason to go browsing. You might link up with someone who posted a query and then left the list after nobody answered. Hello Fletch and everyone else on BLANCHARD-L! My name is Jim Blanchard from New Brunswick Canada, and I've been sitting quietly on the side of this list for some time now. I agree with Martha in Calgary, that there are not enough people doing research on the Acadian branch of the Blanchard family. So I decided to get my feet wet by creating a website. Please drop by for a visit. The address is http://genweb.net/~blanchard My page doesn't have a counter, or guestbook, so I have no idea who, or how many people visit unless you send me an email. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Many thanks to Martha Blanchard, George Blanchard and John Chandler for their help so far. Jim Blanchard EMail -- blanchard@genweb.net URL -- http://genweb.net/~blanchard
Thank you Mr. Chandler for once again pointing out my inadequacies, but the information I posted came out of a publication that my father got out of the Boston Public Library. As far as the child of Agnes, my records show the name being Brent, I know her maiden name was Bent, either way the child only lived for a matter of days and the point is moot. Now, I have only been a part of this list for a short while, and am not privy to all that has been exchanged. So I am sorry for adding what little I know of my ancestors, as redundant as it may seem, because it seems that whether I am right or wrong, I cant spell, punctuate or type. So I apologize to all who I have misled. If there are any interested in exchanging info on the Thomas Blanchard lineage, please feel free to contact me, although I am not guaranteeing my info is going to be accurate, or grammatically correct. Thank You Daniel Blanchard
>From a recent posting on Thomas the immigrant... > Widow Ann Barnes of St. Edmunds. His licence calls him a yeoman and widower, > of Clatford, county, of Southhampton, As it happens, I was sorting through some papers over the weekend and came across a copy of this record. Needless to say, there were no commas in the original. What it actually said was "county of South" -- which was apparently the abbreviation in use at the time for the county more recently called Hampshire. The interesting thing is that the original handwriting style allows some confusion between S and H, u and n, and o and a, so that I was at first tempted to decipher it as "county of Hants" -- which is the modern abbreviation of Hampshire. However, I later decided that "South" was the word after all. Also, the prospective bride was listed as Anns, with a distinct "s" on the end. Given that her name was Agnes, this makes perfect sense (Annis was a normal variant of Agnes). > His first wife's name doesnt appear to be known (of course we all > think it is Elizabeth) Those of us who have seen the parish register for Goodworth Clatford *know* that Elizabeth, the wife of Thomas Blanchard, was buried there in 1636 (as has been posted in this discussion group more than once in the past). The register also has the baptisms of Thomas' children, aside from George (also posted here), including some that evidently died young, but whose burials were not entered. > Child by Second Wife: > Brent, b. 1639, d 1639 onboard the Jonathan No, this is a garbled account. Agnes' maiden name was BENT. The child was baptized at Goodworth Clatford in 1638 as Agnes, daughter of Thomas and Agnes Blanchard (also posted here before). John Chandler
1.Thomas Blanchard came from the vicinity of Andover county of Hants, England, to New England. He married at St. Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire, 15 May, 1637, Widow Ann Barnes of St. Edmunds. His licence calls him a yeoman and widower, of Clatford, county, of Southhampton, a parish two miles south of Andover. Ann Barnes was the widow of Richard Barnes and the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Gosling) Bent of Penton-Grafton, county of Hampshire. She was baptized there July 16, 1602. With her second husband, Thomas, she sailed from London, in the ship Jonathan, for New England 12 April 1639, and died on the voyage. Upon Reaching New England, Thomas settled in Braintree, but removed to Charlestown in 1651. His first wife's name doesnt appear to be known (of course we all think it is Elizabeth) After arriving in New England, he married Mary Shrimpton, who survived him. He made his will 22 May 1654, and it was proved 20 june 1654.(N.E.G.S. Register, 17:156;32:407-411) Children by his first wife, born in England: George, b near 1622;settled in Medford(Mass?) Thomas b. near 1625; settled in Malden(Mass?) Samual b. near 1636; settled in Andover(Mass?) Nathaniel b. near 1636; settled in Weymouth (Mass!) Child by Second Wife: Brent, b. 1639, d 1639 onboard the Jonathan Child of Second wife, by first husband. Richard Barnes, Jr went to Sudbury, Ma to live with his maternal Uncle upon arriving in New England. I have much info on this now, i found some really good info in my Fathers stuff, so any question reguarding this line, or off shoots, ask me, i may have info.

I've seen a report that John died in Orwell, VT in 1803, and I can add two facts: the 1800 census does not show a John Blanchard in Clarendon, nor any Blanchard of that age group, but it does show a John Blanchard over 45 years old in Orwell. Two more facts: no Blanchards in Orwell at all in 1810, and in Clarendon a Caleb over 45 who seems to be the son of John.
