Also new to the list, I'll add what little I have for Blanchard information. Family information, as you can see, is indefinite on whether the name is Blanchard or Blanchette. Both have been found. It is very confusing. Hope someone will be able to shed some light on this. *ANNOUNCEMENT* BLANCHARD-L has finally established a web account at RootsWeb and the pages that were temporarily stored on the server at KlinkNet have been transferred. The "hidden page" at KlinkNet can be used for a short time but will soon be removed. The web address for BLANCHARD-L is: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blanch-l/blpref.html [Note that this reads "blanch-ell"; not "blanch-one"] Databases available as of 21 Oct 1998: Index-Line Databases 1996/97, 1998 Descendants of "Joseph" and Ann BLANCHARD by Pat BLANCHARD CURRY Descendants of Joseph BLANCHARD and Thomas BLANCHARD by John F. Chandler If you have any general questions or comments about these databases, please post them to BLANCHARD-L. New databases will be added as they become available. Additional pages with information for our members will also be added. If you have ideas for new pages, please post them to the List so we all can comment on them. Also, post your suggestions for links that might be appropriate from the B-L Page. Unless we feel the need for a 'review' board, I will act as the final 'reviewer' since I am the 'self-appointed' webmaster. Fletch
Greetings: As a newbie I hope I am doing this right. I am from a branch of the Blanchard family in Ohio and Virginia. I have looked through the database and didn't find any connection at first glance, therefore I thought some of this information might be of use. I would also appreciate anyone responding to this email if they know of this branch of the family. My fathers name was Laverne Francis Blanchard (changed to Donale Laverne), born in Toledo Ohio, April 30, 1920. His father was Raymond Ignacious Blanchard, born April 20, 1899, Definace, Ohio. He had a brother named Francis (Speedy) Ezra Blanchard. Both my father and Speedy were pilots in the airforce. Speedy WWI, and my Dad WWII. My great grandfather was Gideon Blanchard married to Louise Boff (who I have quite a lot of family info on if anyone needs it), and my great-great Grandfather was Felix Ignacious Blanchard. I have no birth dates for either of them nor where they were born. My father was put in an orphanage when he was 8 years old, to be retrieved by a distant cousin who raised him, Eunice Blanchard from Norfolk Virginia. My father didn't keep in touch with the family and I have never met any of them. My father died in 1993 and I have a need to try and trace my family on his side. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Dawn L. Blanchard
Due to the fact that I am moving in a few days, I am going to be off the air until I can get moved and settled in again. I will go off the air on October 28, 1998 for a few weeks. I have enjoyed the group and will be looking forward to getting back to the group as soon as I can. Thanks Eileen N. Bernier QSCB31A@prodigy.com
I thought I submitted the following last March but since no one commented, perhaps it never went through. I have been asked about Shields or Coat of Arms. I know very little, but what I do know may be of interest to someone. Also, please, correct me where I am wrong. Respectfully, Martha There is an important rule in healdry which states that metal must not rest on metal, (eg. silver on gold), nor color on color. this is becasue, when used for its origianl purpoe, the shield was also an identifier for soldiers. Clarity and contrast were import in battle. I don'r remember the exact definitions of terms such as 'field', 'chief', 'fes', etc. 'Arms', 'Crest', and 'Motto'. In the early days of heraldry, only the design on a shield was an an official coat-of-arms. Known as the 'Arms', it was displayed on garments, signs, wall-hangings, and banners, as well as being carried by knights on shields in battle and in the great tournaments of Medieval Europe. Later a 'Crest' was fastened to the helmet for further distinction. Later families added this as part of their armorial bearings. showing it above the shield in the family coat-of-arms. Usually a decorative knight's helmet was included and decorative cloths called 'Mantling' flowed gracefully from it. Official records described only the 'Arms' and the 'Crest' until about 1`500 when some families used the 'Motto'. 'Motos' were brief phrases expressing some pious, loyal, or moral sentiment and may be in any language. 'Blazonry' Heraldic designs on the shields may be very simple or extremely comples. The art of describing them in words became a precise science called 'Blazonery'. Most of the terms are unfamiliar today, but this special language must be understood by artists. Some of the common terms of blazonary are 'Colors'; OR yellow or gold ARGENT white or silver SABLE black GULES red AZURE blue VERT green ERMINE white with black tails
You can now access the BLANCHARD-L Databases from the following page: http://www.klink.net/~fab/blpref.html Databases available as of 21 Oct 1998: Index-Line Databases 1996/97, 1998 Descendants of "Joseph" and Ann BLANCHARD by Pat BLANCHARD CURRY Descendants of the presumed brothers Joseph BLANCHARD and Thomas BLANCHARD by John F. I happened upon this item on a page of the 1893 death registers: Town of Glocester - Deaths in 1893, p 608 August 21, Filbert Blanchard, ae 3m 5d, in Glocester, male, white, born in Glocester of American parentage: Filbert and Virginia Blanchard, from tuberculosis of bowels. I don't know who these people are, but someone may find this useful. John [Index: Filbert 1893 Glocester, RI 1998 10 19]
I was thinking it would be a lot of work to type out this line, but then I realized I can copy Family Tree Maker's descendancy outline to clipboard and paste it here. I know Skip asked me for this version of the line, as he also has a Lyman Blanchard like mine, and since it seems someone else whose address I forgot or lost also asked, I'll just stick it here, and other people with Vt or NY lines may want to respond to it as well. I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone with Lyman, Schuyler, or Georgina in their ancestry. Is anyone online familiar with this line that Pat gave me snail-mail: Generation 1: William Blanchard and possibly Jane Steere Generation 2: Theophilus Blanchard and Patience Jefford (first wife) Generation 3: John Blanchard and Abigail or Rachel Generation 4: Caleb Blanchard and Zilpha Slye Generation 5: Salmon or Solomon Blanchard and Lola Eddy Generation 6: 1 Mary 2 Henry 3 Electa 4 Lyman J. 5 Honeyman 6 Lydia 7 Zilpha 8 Elon 9 Sarah Jane My husband and children descend from Lyman. My husband's mom was raised by a lady named Lola Hayden, whom I presume to have been the daughter of #6, Lydia Ann Hayden after marriage. Lola Hayden had been a school teacher when she was young, and in her old age kept a boarding house across the street from my husband's mom's already crowded Auburn home. Lola Hayden had a bell collection, including an old school bell, which she rang out the boarding house window if there was a fire or need for someone to come. There is a question about Lyman's wife. Most of the records we have found say he was married to an Almira or Almina. Our family tradition says his first son was born to this lady. His first son who lived was named Schuyler. There may have been a prior child, Theodore, believed to have died. Then there was a daughter, according to family tradition by a second wife, Sarah Branch, who was named Georgina. Schuyler called her "Georgie." Georgina was the mother of my husband's mother's mother, Elma Blanche (Treat) Filkins. Elma wrote the family tree for my husband when he was a child which shows what I have been calling "family tradition." This tree shows that Sarah Branch had a brother Charles Branch and a sister Alvira Branch. The census shows that Charles Branch and Lyman Blanchard were working together "Painters" ages 40 and 41 in Brutus, N.Y. the same year, 1850. I have wondered if Alvira and Almira or Almina may not also be the same person. Please write to me if you share any of these names mentioned above, or if you know anything about the Branch family. Thanks, cousins! -Joy
Hi List Members - Laura and Tony Sidnell in Cornwall, England joined us on BLANCHARD-L recently. Laura has told me about a family Bible that contains vital records that she would like to share with the List. She has sent me photographs of the Bible (published in 1789) and several pages, photocopies of the pages on which the records were entered and transcripts for these entries and for some supplementary notes that were attached to pages of the Bible. I offered to organize these materials and report them to the List and I hope that I do so correctly. Elmore Reaman, through ILL and have prepared a summary of parts of this book that might be of interest to List members who are searching for the parents (origins) of Thomas Blanchard and Joseph Blanchard. Jean Pierre Blanchard has been proposed as the father of the emigrants Thomas and Joseph (as well as Peter and Jean/John who are said to have remained in England) and is rumored to have been the "Huguenot" connection that Reaman credits to Harry D. Blanchard of Toronto. If you are interested in seeing this summary, I will be happy to send it to your personal address as an attached file (ASCII Text). I could also send it via regular e-mail if you don't mind how it changes the formatting. Hi Maggie and All, I found birth records on children of Daniel and Ruhama Smith at NH vital records. I had a child, Ruhama listed from the Cutter Family book referenced below as well as Susanna that no record was found on. I assumed that Ruhama was Amy, but given the two spaces in the births I am wondering if there may have been two children, Amy and Ruhama. The date of birth given below was from a birth certificate for Amy Smith with no given middle name. We have a list of Smith VR's at the State record office that was done by a volunteer which made it easier to cruise through and identify children of Daniel and Ruhama. I will check the record drawer again for Ruhama and Susanna Smith's births. Sherry Descendants of Daniel Smith Generation No. 1 1. Sherry kindly sent me more information about Amy [Ruhama] Smith, as one of her ancestors was Amy's brother Samuel, whose daughter Martha Jane married Silas Blanchard. This is a good illustration of the value of looking at the extended family--you just never know where you will find helpful connections. It is amazing to me how closely intertwined families were as we go up the family tree. When you think about it, with people being less mobile than today, they probably tended to marry within a fairly small circle. The Blanchard and Crosby families, for instance, have many marriages between then even back to England. In addition, Blanchards and Crosbys often witnessed each other's wills. On that subject, I noticed that in 1624, a Martha Blanchard married in England John Bent, brother of Agnes Bent who married Thomas Blanchard. Were Martha and Thomas siblings? I was just curious. To get back to Amy [Ruhama] Smith, wife of Jotham Blanchard, Jr, What information I have about her is from my cousin, Mike Cambre, who got me started on this geneology hobby in the first place. Mike's information is from the Blanchard bible which is in the possession of family members living in the Baton Rouge area. I am interested in checking the data further. Jotham and Amy had the following children: Daniel, b. 15 July 1798; Lucinda, b. 15 Sep 1800; Charles, b. 13 Mar 1803; Frederick, b. 8 Oct. 1805; Cyrus, b. 3 Nov 1808; Jotham, b. 19 Apr 1811; and Asa, b. 12 Jun 1813. Probably all these were born in New Hampshire, in Hillesborough Co, although this remains to be proven. Does anyone have any information on these siblings? Frederick is my ancestor, and he moved later to the Baton Rouge, LA area before the Civil War. According to the census, he was a gunsmith and a merchant. I'll send the gedcom later as I am now at the office and the complete file is at home. So thanks, Sherry, and have a great trip! Warmest regards, Maggie
Thank you Tom for your postings of 'Pat Curry's Responses'. In answer to the Oct 6th response of Pat Blanchard Curry: > As to gen. 7 William Henry Blanchard [1827-], his 2 wives >& their children: Thanks for adding Maria's children [I assume >John Waddell Blanchard [1863-] is your great grandfather.] My lineage is Henry Percy-8, Sedley Sherburne-9 (1904-1982), Norman Percy-10 (1929 -) and Ranald Norman-11 (1952-) [me]. Received the following from Pat Blanchard Curry today. These are her responses to some of your posts to this list the past few months. I am removing Jotham [b 1784] as one of his children & confirming that the Jotham who married Margaret ( ) Spears was the son of Jonathan & Sarah. [Thanks to Sherry Gould for catching the duplication!!] As to gen. 7 William Henry Blanchard [1827- ], his 2 wives & their children: Thanks for adding Maria's children [I assume John Waddell Blanchard [1863- ] is your great grandfather. ] Looking to the time when the "Joseph" line will be updated on the web, would appreciate having a FGS for William Henry, etc. so the data is properly corrected. *************** To "mgus@t-one.net" [Margaret Gustafson] Aug-Sep 1998 Re FREDERICK [1805-1850], son of Jotham & Ruhama: I would appre- ciate having FGS's or Family Bible data for Frederick & his children. In my outline of Samuel-2 & desc., I'm trying to include data through the 9th generation. Snail-mail would be fine. ********************* To "pkp33@ix.netcom.com" [Penny] of 7 Aug 1998 Re possible death date of SAMUEL BLANCHARD [b 1716/17, Andover, MA] who married Ruth Tenney: There is a suggestive entry in the Boston paper "Columbian Centinal" of 1 Mar 1806: Samuel Blanchard, ae 89, died in Dracut, MA. This death is not list- ed in the printed VR of either Dracut or Andover; however in the 1800 census for Dracut, Middlesex, MA, p49 is a Samuel & wife, both over ae 45, as well as Caleb Blanchard & fam. [known to be the son of Samuel & Ruth (Tenney) Blanchard]. Both Caleb & his sister Ruth were eventually in Antrim, NH. *********************** To "gvc@mail.HughesTech.Net" [Shirley Cotter] on 18 Aug 1998 Re CALEB [b 1797], son of Isaac, & wife Penelope Aldrich. Caleb had brothers Daniel, Robert, Howland, Sherman & Isaac according to Crandall's "Blanchard's of Rhode Island". Supposedly wife Penelope Aldrich was born 14 Jan 1800, Guilford, Windham, VT to Jonathan & Amelia (Gaines) Aldrich according to an article in "Branches & Twigs" v8 pp114-117; publ. by the Geneal. Soc. of Vermont. It is certainly possible that Amelia's surname might really be "JAMES" rather than "GAINES" but at least the latter spelling adds some alternatives to your research... Caleb and Penelope may have married c1825 in Preble, Cortland, NY and her mother Amelia Aldrich seems to have been in Cortland Co., NY in 1838 when they released their interest in some of Amelia's land there. [Cortland Co. deed 6:287] **************** To DBlanch100@aol.com" [Daniel] Re SUSANNA (BATES), wife of NATHANIEL [d 1676]. There is an Allen listed p136, Danville, Caledonia Co. which needs to be checked. Also in 1860 in Chittenden, Rutland Co. is an Allen & [Emily] Jane + 7 children who belong among the desc. of George-2 Thomas-1. The youngest child listed is son Isaac, b Jul 1859. [Your Ida A., b Jan 1860, should be listed in the 1860 census which was taken around June -- unless her birthdate is slightly "off"]. This birth record identifies him as the son of William J. & Jane M. (Shearer) Blanchard -- all being desc. of George-2 Thomas-1.
