    1. Blanchard VT, MA
    2. kphillip
    3. I have just subscribed to the list and am using this as an introduction. I grew up in western MA and am descended from two Blanchard lines, one better researched than the other. Two distantly related branches of the family apparently moved into southern VT when it opened up after the French and Indian Wars and stayed in southern VT and adjoining western MA. The better researched line looks like this: Susan, Kenneth A. (1926- ), Leon E. (1897-1957), Lillie N. (Tower) (1870-1949), Elmina N. (Blanchard) Tower (1839-1902), Robert V. (1799- 1859), Ebenezer (1774-1849), Lemuel (1750-1811), Samuel (1724-?), John (1691-1752), John (1660-1733), Nathaniel, Thomas. The other line picks up where Willie Eaton Blanchard (1867-1923) married Lillie Nancy Tower about 1891 in North Adams, Berkshire Co., MA. Willie was the son of Lysander Eaton and Jane Marie (Brown) Blanchard. Jane was his second wife. Lysander was born about 1832 in Stamford, VT and died 14 Apr 1903 in North Adams. He was the son of Chandler and Minerva (Eaton) Blanchard. Chandler was born in Guilford, VT c. 1808 (per MA 1865 census). He married Minerva Eaton, daughter of Noadiah and Roby (Sheldon) Eaton, in Stamford, VT 7 Feb 1828. He died between 1880 when he was counted in the census in Hawley, MA and 1892 when his wife died a widow. He is not buried with her in the plot he owned in Maple St. Cemetery, Adams, MA. Chandler was the son of Nehemiah and Lucy (Jones) Blanchard who married in 1799 in Buckland, MA. I do not have Nehemiah's parents. He may have been in Halifax, VT in the 1840 census. I do have a fair amount on Chandler's offspring gleaned from local VR, census, and cemetery visits. Sophina c. 1828-8 May 1861 married Alonzo Helme 1 son (?), 1 daughter Mary Elmina c. 1829-? married Henry Roberts 4 daughters Lysander Eaton c. 1832-14 Apr 1903 married Martha Ann Harris 1 daughter married Jane Marie Brown 1 son, 1 daughter Daniel S. c. 1832-22 Jan 1895 married Mary I. Sweet 1 son married Mary Glazier 2 sons, 8 daughters Permelia S. c. 1836-6 Jun 1880 married Edwin Meacham Rhobe A. c. 1836-6 Nov 1913 married William E. Meacham at least 1 daughter Harriet M. Nov 1838-10 Feb 1854 Chandler Henry Mar 1841-21 Nov 1902 lost leg in Civil War married Amanda Myers married Julia M. 1 daughter Lovisa R. c. 1843-? married Francis W. Atkins at least 1 son, at least 1 daughter Everett W. c. 1848-22 Sep 1864 died while serving in Civil War I can supply sources and details on this generation. As a matter of neatness I would like to find where and when Chandler died. I know a little about Chandler's siblings Nehemiah, Jr., Mehitable, and Isaac, but I have nothing on his probable other brothers Calvin, Luther, and Caleb. I would also like to find Nehemiah's forebears and how he fits into the larger family. Susan Blanchard

    3. As of 1 Jan 1999, no new lines will be added to the BLANCHARD-L Index-Line Databases. This means that you are not asked to supply Lines with your messages and I will no longer add missing Lines. For messages after that date, we must depend on the Archives at RootsWeb to search messages. I will update the B-L Greetings/Guidelines accordingly and post the new version to the List. These Databases have provided a useful service and I still refer to them to help members locate material. I have added missing Lines to messages for the last couple of months and will update the 1998 Database so it will be complete. The 1996/97 and the 1998 Databases will continue to be available on the our Web Page. Fletch

    3. In message /905, Carol Craig inquired about a book written by Lydia Simpson. Fitting some of the other information together that Carol provided, I believe she is referring to "All About Me and My Ancestors", compiled by Laura Blanchard Simpson, Mrs. John Carl Simpson, Fort Collins, Colorado, 1974. I first heard of this at the NYS Library? but later received some copies of pages from this book from Ila Blanchard of North Ferrisburgh, VT who had obtained them from her husband's distant cousin Marshall Blanchard of Wilton, CT. I'm not sure why Marshall was interested in this because his line is Thomas - Samuel - Jonathan. Well, so much for the background. My photocopies have an unreadable stamp at the bottom of the cover that looks like an LDS reference and above it another stamp that reads "Date Microfilm 8-75, ?? on roll 23, Camera no. SLC 19, Catalogue No. 940046", in case someone would like to investigate this with their local FHS. The "book" or at least the papers that I have, consists of 3 pages of 4-generation ancestor charts, 10 pages of family group sheets and 5 pages of text, with pages numbered 17 - 21, so I suspect that this may be only the part of Laura's "book" that was of interest to Marshall Blanchard. The pedigree charts trace the following Blanchard line: James Corydon Blanchard (1861-1943) m. Pearl Belle Goss (1886-1966) Uri Curtis Blanchard (1814-1898) m. Martha Matilda Hutson (1834-1923) William Blanchard (1779- ? ) m. Katherine Lamb (1786-1863) Abiel Blanchard (1748- ? ) m. Elizabeth Church (1744 - ? ) William Blanchard (?-?) m. Thankful Webster (?-?) George Blanchard (?-?) m. Sarah Munroe (?-?) George Blanchard (1618-1700) m. Elizabeth (Hills) Harris (1627-?) Thomas Blanchard (1586-1654) m. Elizabeth (?-?) Jean (John) Blanchard b.1555, Peninsula Calentine; d. Yorkshire, England It is interesting to note that Thomas' place of birth is given as "on Peninsula of Calentine" and that we find again a Jean Blanchard as the possible father of Thomas. Also, the questionable Elizabeth (Hills) Harris shows up again. The Family Group Sheets (limited data on some) are for: Thomas Blanchard George Blanchard George Blanchard II William Blanchard (more complete data) Abiel Blanchard (more complete data) William Blanchard (more complete data) Uriah Curtis Blanchard (for an unknown wife and 5 children) Uriah Curtis Blanchard (for wife Matha Matilda Hutson and 4 children) James Corydon Blanchard (for wife Alice Hutson and one son who d. at 11 y. and with notation that 2nd. w. was Pearl Belle Goss) James Corydon Blanchard (for wife Pearl Belle Goss and 8 children, one of whom is Laura Lyda Blanchard, b. 1922, who is probably Laura B. Simpson) The first two pages of text recount the history of various early Blanchards, none of whom are claimed to have been Laura's ancestors, except for Thomas. The last three pages are summary sheets for Thomas, George, George, William, Abiel, William, and Uriah where most of the data appears to agree with the pedigree charts and FGS. If anyone is interested in these individuals, I would be glad to check the pages for other information. I just checked the NYS Library card catalog and they <do not have> Laura's book so I will try to recall where I first heard about it. Fletch

    3. There are a number of Admin. type things to share but I'll spread them over several messages and will try to keep them short and sweet. I have added two links to the BLANCHARD-L Web Page at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blanch-l/blpref.html The first is called "Blanchard Links" and takes you to a page where BLANCHARD (and name variants) "databases and data sets on other servers" will be offered. The first of these is "Descendants of Azariel BLANCHARD which is on the CortlandNYGenWeb Page and was prepared by David C. Crankshaw. Several of you know David and have been helped by the wonderful collection of data he has prepared. Azariel settled in the area around Cortland Co. and many, many of his descendants stayed in the region. David was a resident of Cortland Co. until two years ago when he moved to FL. His wife descends from Azariel. Some of Azariel's descendants are also reported in Pat Curry's George BLANCHARD database since Azariel descends from Thomas - George - George - William. If you know of similar appropriate databases or data sets, send me a brief description, where they are located (URL) and permission from the author to add a link from the BLANCHARD-L Page. The second link is to a page called "Links to other sources, tools, research aids, etc." This page will include sites that may be useful in your genealogical pursuits, whether or not they involve BLANCHARDs directly. I'll do my best to judge which of these are suitable for the B-L Page. Fletch

    1. GenConnect Boards
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. Here is the status on the GenConnect Boards that have been set up in conjunction with the BLANCHARD-L Mail List at RootsWeb. I have activated the six additional boards so that we can try them out and decide if we want to continue supervising them or release them to someone else. These are: Bible Records, Wills, Deeds, Pensions, Obits, and Biographies. The Query board can be considered the primary board. Query, Bible, Wills, Deeds and Pensions are 'open' boards which means that anyone can post to them. I have set Obits and Biographies to "read only", following the guidelines that suggest these might require more supervision to avoid copyright violation. For now, all posts to these two Boards must be sent directly to me, as the Board Supervisor and I will review and then post. I don't know how much work is involved. If it turns out that any of these boards require more time than I have for them, I may ask for volunteers to consider taking over the supervision or will ask for your opinions on giving them up to a non-member. Some listowners who did not get the word early enough to sign up for boards on a "first come, first served" basis, are disappointed that their boards were taken by some "early birds". This is the main URL which takes you to the Query Board http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/Blanchard >From here you can use the "Visit Another Site" link to go to the main GenConnect site and navigate to the Surname Boards, Blanchard, and pick the Board you want. It might be easier to use the URLs for each site. Here's the pattern: For the Wills Board, add "Will" to the Query page URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/FamilyAssoc/BlanchardWill For Bible Records add Bibl For Biographies add Bios For Deeds add Deed For Obituaries add Obits For Pensions add Pens You must add the 'exact' word as shown and each is case-sensitive. I plan to add a page to the BLANCHARD-L Web Site that will be a "jumping off" point to all the GenConnect Boards, but in the meantime, you can bookmark these URLs. Please send me your thoughts on how we can use these boards to extend the capabilities of BLANCHARD-L. Fletch

    3. Sorry to take up more Archives space with these non-genealogy messages but List business must be conducted. At this holiday time of year, a lot of members may be shutting down their List addresses temporarily. Please be sure to unsub from RootsWeb instead of just pulling the plug on your address with your IP. After 4-5 bounces, RootsWeb will generally unsub an address automatically but sometimes the bounces continue. If you have been using more than a single address with this List, please be sure to post or send -requests using the address that that you are currently subbed with. Now that the List is 'closed'' you will have to let me know if you want to be able to post to the list from, say, at home and from your office, and I will add a second address to the "accept" list. When I have received several notices of bounced messages from RootsWeb, I try to contact the list member at the same address but usually my message bounces also. I then send a note to any other address that they may have used before, to offer help. My best advice is, if you are not receiving messages or have problems sending to the -request address, please contact me right away. It may have no connection to our recent switch to "closed" but there have been various problems lately with bounced mail from B-L and with sub/unsub requests to the List. Fletch

    3. I. As many of you probably already know, most Mail Lists at RootsWeb are now "closed"; only members can post to the Lists. Attempts by non-members to post to this list are forwarded to me and I will 1) encourage them to join our List, 2) notify them that their message content is not appropirate for BLANCHARD-L or 3) offer to post their message to the List if I think it would be of interest to our members. II. I will continue to add any missing Index-Lines to BLANCHARD-L posts until 31 Dec 1998. I have a pile of messages that need to be sorted for missing Lines There will be one more update of the Lines to complete the 1998 Database. We will depend on the RootsWeb Archives to search messages after that date. However, the1996/97 and the 1998 Index-Line Databases will still be available on the BLANCHARD-L Web Page. I would like to thank all the members who have supplied lines in their posts, since we started at Maiser in June 1996. I also want to thank John Chandler who had the foresight to suggest that we set up a system of identifying persons and related subject matter in the archived list messages. In the early days, we had no idea how genealogy at RootsWeb would progress. Once you become familiar with our Archives Search Page, you will find that it is very powerful, however, I often go to the Index-Line Databases for a quick check and find it helpful to be able to scroll through the list of similar given names. III. I will be away next week for 4 or 5 days but will keep in touch with my mail from time to time in case of any problems. Best Holiday Wishes to all of you and thanks for your contributions to the growth and welfare of this List. Don't forget to visit the BLANCHARD Queries Board at GenConnect/RootsWeb and let the List/me know how you think we can use it to complement BLANCHARD-L. Fletch

    3. Chris Arnold, in his message (/866) to the List on 12/12/98, inquired about Charles and Hannah (BLENCH) BROOKS and Robert and Elizabeth (HARKNESS) BLENCH. At the time, I had not seen the BLENCH surname in any messages. Among the BLANCHARD data sheets in Mr. Henry C. Richie's Papers that I reported in /892, there is a single sheet with information on several BLENCH/BLANCH/BLANCHE famililies. I will try to summarize the data here. 3. Those of you who are familiar with Henry Z. Jones, noted researcher/lecturer in German Genealogy, and author of the "Psychic Roots" books, might be interested in the following account which relates to our Blanchard genealogy investigations. There have always been certain individuals in any region of a country who have developed, often for reasons of their own, an interest in recording and preserving the history of their locality. Henry C. Ritchie of Saratoga County, NY was one of these people. The "Ritchie Papers", housed in the New York State Archives, have been available to researchers by way of microfilm but the nature of the original handwritten records did not produce clear, reliable film. Within the past few weeks, arrangements were made to transfer the original papers to the Saratoga County Historian's Office in Ballston, Spa, NY. Yesterday, when I had an opportunity to inspect the Ritchie Papers, I was pleasantly surprised to find the following letter among the alphabetically arranged data pages under 'Blanchard'. ________ Apartment 15 D, 21 - 66 33rd. Road Long Island City, 6, N.Y June 13, 1953 Mr. Henry C. Ritchie Galway Saratoga County, N.Y. My dear Mr. Ritchie: In my spare time I am engaged in compiling a history of the Blanchard Family, descendants of Thomas Blanchard who came to New England on the ship, "Jonathan," in June 1639 and settled in Charlestown, Mass. To date I have record of more than twelve thousand obtained by tracing the male lines to the present but the female through one generation only. My connection with the famiy is by marriage, my wife Helen Blanchard, being of the ninth generation from emigrant Thomas through his third son, Samuel Blanchard of Andover, Massachusetts. After the Revolution several individuals of various branches of this family settled in Saratoga County having come there from Vermont or western Massachusetts. As an authority on that district, I am writing you at the suggestion of my friend Mr. George McKenzie Roberts, now of Berryville, Va., to see if you can give any additional information on the following Blanchards. A couple of years ago, while doing some work of his own on a branch of the Rhodes family in Saratoga County, Mr. Roberts copied the following items from Town Clerk records, Cornelius E. Durkee's Cemetery Inscriptions, etc. Simeon Blanchard b. Dec. 19, 1848, in Northumberland, N.Y.; d. Sept. 18, 1896, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., a son of Charles & Elizabeth (Van Kleeck) Blanchard. On Mar. 28, 1978, he mar. Jennie C. Ingalls and for many years was a carpenter in Greenfield, N.Y., where all of their seven children were born. Unfortunately, at the moment I cannot find in my files what little data I had concerning Charles Blanchard and his wife Elizabeth Van Kleeck but what there was, was probably taken from Durkee who, I think, had death records for both. However, I think he said that Charles was the son of Asahel Blanchard. What I would like to know is whether you have any records whatever on this Asahel Blanchard, probate, land conveyances, identity of his wife, other children besides Charles, etc. And, likewise, whether or not you have similar records of Charles and Elizabeth Van Kleeck. I have no idea as to the identity of her parents. If we can learn more about Asahel Blanchard I am sure that I can place him in the proper branch of the family. It is an unusual name in the Blanchard family but I am sure that this Asahel is a descendant of an Asahel who, as a veteran of the Revolutionary War, died May 10, 1815, in New Haven Mills, Vt. Another Asahel, undoubtedly a son, was in New Haven, Vt. in the Census of 1810, with a wife over 45 years of age, a daughter between 16 and 24, and two sons and another daughter under ten years of age. One of these younger sons born in the early 1800's may welll have been the Asahel of Saratoga County, father of Charles. Any further light that you may be able to throw on any of these people will be deeply appreciated. A self-addressed stamped envelope is inclosed for your convenience. Sincerely yours, J. Crawford Hartman _________ [If I had come across this letter 6 or 7 years ago, it would have saved me a lot of digging!] Some of you will recognize J. Crawford Hartman as the subject of a number of posts to this List, from our discussions of <his> papers some of which are located at the New York Genealogical & Biographical Society in New York and his genealogical articles which have appeared in several publications including the NYG&B Record and the Boston Evening Transcript. I don't believe there is anything personal in this letter that would prohibit me from including it here and the information on these Saratoga County Blanchard families may be of interest to our members. This letter is of particular interest to me since it mentions my 2g.grandparents Elizabeth (Van Kleeck) and Charles {Henry} Blanchard and my 3g.grandfather Asahel Blanchard. Contrary to Mr. Hartman's presumption that the younger Asahel, residing in New Haven, VT was a son of the Rev. War veteran Asahel, I am attempting to confirm that rather, he was a nephew and the son of the elder Asahel's brother, Abner. The letter verifies that Mr. Hartman's interest in BLANCHARD was because of his wife Helen who was descended from Samuel, son of Thomas. It is also of considerable interest to learn that he had collected data on "more than twelve thousand". This suggests that if these records are included in the "boxes" at the NYG&BS, we should definitely arrange to see them. Correspondence from them indicated that the records are unindexed, consist of 3 cu. ft. and can be viewed by NYGBS members. Ritchie's microfilm gives no clue to the existence of the Hartman letter or any of the clippings, and other brief notes that are tucked between some of his original data pages. All of these are now available to researchers at the Saratoga County Historian's Office. I am working with a group that will investigate how we can publicize the "Ritchie Papers" and perhaps make them available in abbreviated form on the Web. Fletch
