    1. A Very Sad Message
    2. Tom Wilde
    3. Dear Blanchard Researchers; I received the following message today from Pat Blanchard Curry's family. ------- "It is with great sorrow, that the Curry family notes the sudden passing of Pat Blanchard Curry on New Year's Eve, 1998. Pat's research on the Blanchard family was a source of pride for her and her family, and the family would like to thank the many people who interacted with Pat over the years on the study of this family. Pat's extensive research data will not be lost, nor will the project come to an end. The family has a viable plan for this work to be carried on in a way that will both keep the project within the family and continue to make Pat's research available to others. Those wishing to send condolences via e-mail may send them to mitch@mcn.org Sincerely, Mitch Sprague and Robin Curry (Pat's daughter)" ------------- I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Pat's passing. Although we never met face-to-face, our correspondence over the last year or two brought us as close as two friends could be. Pat was so generous in her sharing of her Blanchard data. She was the first to give me the information I was seeking on my great grandmother, Orpha Blanchard. It was Pat's idea to have me act as a go-between for her and the Blanchard mailing list since she was not online. She was so eager to help anyone who was researching the Blanchard name and she went out of her way to provide all the information that was available to her to help others in their research. I feel a deep loss on her passing and the genealogy world will also feel this loss. However, I am heartened by Mitch's and Robin's message about carrying on the research. Please join me in offering our condolences to Pat's family. You may send an e-mail message of condolence to <mailto:mitch@mcn.org>. Cards of sympathy can be sent to Pat's home address: 3414 Fleetwood Dr., Richmond, California 94803-2012 Sadly and with heavy heart, Tom Wilde mailto:wildeman1@home.com

    1. Thank You
    2. Sherry L Gould
    3. Dear Mitch and Robin, I am very sorry to hear of your loss. As a Blanchard descendant I certainly feel the loss of one who worked so diligently to preserve the history of our family. I had corresponded some with Pat about sorting out the Richard and Benjamin Blanchards of Northwood and Canterbury, NH. Unfortunately I got busy with other projects and did not get far with that search. Please keep me informed as to who will be continuing with the work. I say thank you on two counts. The first is for letting us know of your loss. The second is due to an assumption that like most children of family historians you probably sacrificed some things for your mother's work. So many of us have benefited from that work and for my part I am indebted to your possible sacrifice. May you be strengthened through the hours days and weeks to follow as you negotiate this life passage. Sincerely, Sherry Gould ------- "It is with great sorrow, that the Curry family notes the sudden passing of Pat Blanchard Curry on New Year's Eve, 1998. 3. Thanks for understanding, John! You also must have a full time job and other evening commitments! It's not that it wouldn't be fun to spend lots of time in genealogical research, but the challenge is to accomplish the result within the time you have available to devote, given many other priorities. I appreciate your suggested approach. -Jim

    1. Tag Lines & GenConnect
    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. All members should know about our new Boards at GenConnect and I hope you have had a chance to use them. New members have been notified in the Greetings/Guidelines message that they received from me and others in posts to the List on 21 Dec 1998 and 4 Jan 1999. I recently added 'tag lines' to the messages distributed on our List by RootsWeb. These were made available to the Lists, some time ago to allow list owners/managers to include reminders about list operation, addresses, admin. procedures and, if so desired, subtle promotions for RootsWeb. I have hesitated to use these 'tag lines' since I believed they were not necessary and just took up space in everyone's mailbox and in the Archives. Based on the recent concerns for the future of RootsWeb and 'free access to genealogical records on the Internet', I decided to try some 'tag lines' and intended to wait until we had cycled through all 10 tags (that is the number that must be submitted for the system to work) before announcing them. As you will see, my thought was to use the tags to remind members about some of our BLANCHARD-L web sites, to show the various services that are offered by RootsWeb and a couple of 'less subtle' tags that give sites for information about what RootsWeb is all about and how to become a RootsWeb supporter. If you have any comments about these 'tag lines', please direct them to my personal mailbox. By the way, you will find it easier to copy/paste the URLs into your browser, especially the longer ones. Thanks. Fletch

    2. John F. Chandler
    3. Jim raised a serious question. If we look back 10 generations, we each have a thousand or so ancestors, all of them equally worthy of our genealogical research (though some of them may be unknown to us!). Even taking pedigree collapse into account, we still "should" each be monitoring hundreds of surname discussion groups. Obviously, there isn't enough time to do that, so we must decide how to cut down to a reasonable load. I used to draw the line at two surname groups, but it is very hard to resist new ones, so I have given some thought to ways of getting the benefits of these groups without spending all the time it would take to subscribe. The best I have come up with is to take advantage of the Rootsweb search engine to track down only those few articles that mention the combination of forenames I want. Admittedly, using this technique might result in missing a clue here and there, but that could happen anyway. John Chandler

    3. I, for one, am happy to contribute as a sponsor and plan to up my subscription level to sponsor-plus this year. My mother taught me that there is no such thing as a free lunch. 3. Message text written by INTERNET:BLANCHARD-L@rootsweb.com >< Fletch -- I appreciate your faithfulness in herding this Blanchard family project. I originally subscribed in hopes of connecting up my ancestress - which has been a deadend for me for a long time. I now get myriads of notes that I have to go through -- with insufficient time to devote -- and virtually no help to my situation. Not complaining, but wondering if this is the way to really accomplish anything for me -- as one who isn't anxious to carry on dialogue that doesn't go anywhere. Suggestions? -Jim

    3. I hope this is one of the last Admin. messages to the List for a while. I urge you to read this message and then make up your minds about what you would like to do. Those of you who are Listowners/Webmasters at RootsWeb and read the Listowners-L and TEAM-ROOTSWEB-L list messages and/or receive the RootsWeb Review (Genealogical Data Cooperative News; > 240,000 circulation), already know about the recent discussions concerning the future of RootsWeb. Others may be interested to learn something about RootsWeb who provides server space for our Mail List and Web Page. >From its beginning, the RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, has had the goal of providing free access to genealogical data on the Internet. Not only this, but RW is providing free server space, with limited privileges, to many, many genealogy-related groups, including many of the USGenWeb County Pages, Genealogical organization, etc. For expanded use of their servers, users can subscribe to the Cooperative at various levels from 'Contributor Services' to 'Donor Plus Services' with yearly subscriptions ranging from $12 to $250. Each of these subscription levels provides a range of services; Mail Lists, Web Pages, GenConnect Boards, etc. to the subscriber. Anyone who is not interested in becoming a List owner or a Web master can still contribute to RootsWeb, at any level, just to show their appreciation for what is being offered to the genealogical community. BLANCHARD-L is a Sponsor Plus and our List members <have no obligation to make any addtional contribution to RootsWeb>. I want to emphasize this, so that what follows is not misunderstood. Due to the phenomenal growth of RW, those who appreciate what they are trying to do and who understand that continued growth will only come about from comparable growth in support, will know what needs to happen. Here are a few facts and figures. RootsWeb has ~250,000 users and is probably one of the top 25 most heavily trafficked sites on the Internet. They are currently serving 27,000,000 (yes, 27 million) page views per month. Anyone with Internet access, a modem and the necessary SW can access materials on the RW servers without paying a cent! Yet, only 2-6% of these RW users make any financial contribution to the operation and expansion of RootsWeb. It would take only a modest increase in contributors (to 3-8%), for RW to be able to continue their present growth and only a somewhat larger increase for them to be able to continue to accelerate their services/growth. Here is what the RootsWeb Review, Vol.2, No. 1, 6 January 1999 had to say about recent events in the commercial world of genealogy. [These remarks by Co-editor Myra Vanderpool Gormley tell it much better than I might paraphrase it.] "Recently Mattel, the toy maker (Hot Wheels, Ken and Barbie), announced it would buy The Learning Company, Inc. Earlier in 1998, The Learning Company purchased Mindscape (producer of Family Tree Creator) and Broderbund (producer of Family Tree Maker), and then in December it acquired Palladium Interactive (producer of Ultimate Family Tree). What does this mean to genealogists? It appears Mattel is going to wind up with all the genealogy toys, so to speak - owning the major popular genealogy software programs and the companies that produce most of the genealogy CDs. Additionally, the "Wall Street Journal" in its December 17, 1998, issue announced that CMG Information Services, Inc. will invest $10 million in Ancestry for a 30 percent stake in that company. CMG is betting that genealogy is about to make a big breakthrough on the Web. However, the CMG investors are not talking about helping you find that long-lost ancestor when they refer to a "breakthrough." They mean making money. Where is all this going in 1999? I have as much trouble peering into the future as I do digging up the past, but it appears to me that the costs of computer genealogy (software and CDs) are likely to increase. Moreover the price of admission to many genealogy sources on the Web is probably going to go up. Many surfers are already paying $5 to $10 per month ($60-$120 annually) to have access to various sources of finding aids. Many onliners are discovering their "free" Web space or e-mail account comes with hidden prices -- loaded with ads and their names and e-mail addresses sold to cyber-merchants." . . . . . . . PERMISSION TO REPRINT articles from ROOTSWEB REVIEW is granted unless specifically stated otherwise. Article written by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG, Co-editor, RootsWeb Review Previously published by RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative, RootsWeb Review, Vol. 2, No. 1, 6 January 1999. Please visit RootsWeb's main Web page at <http://www.rootsweb.com>. If you have read this far, I think you can understand the situation that is developing. In the past, I have from time to time asked our subscribers to consider a personal contribution to RootsWeb; that is, over and above what has already been given to qualify BLANCHARD-L as a "paid in full" Sponsor Plus. Now, these simple appeals by listowners for their members to support RootsWeb may no longer be adequate so I am making an extra effort to give you some background and keep you informed about what is happening in the Internet Genealogy arena. According to Brian Leverich, co-owner with Karen Isaacson of the RootsWeb Cooperative, RootsWeb is <not going out of business> but in order to honor their pledge to provide "free access" to genealogical material on the Internet, we must find a way for more "users" to become "supporters". Some listowners have suggested that a contribution to RootsWeb could be as little as or as much as a new CD or piece of SW, a membership in a genealogy/history society or a trip to an out-of-town repository. Perhaps the post-holiday season is not the best time to promote support for RootsWeb but since it is the beginning of a new year, maybe you could include it in your budget. This is a decision each of you can make. I urge you to visit these two web sites for more information about RootsWeb and for details about support levels/benefits and payment options. http://rootsweb.com/ http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how to subscribe.html You can send e-mail to: RW-info@rootsweb.com or mail to their postal address: RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative P.O. 6798 Frazier Park, CA 93222-6798 (Please include your e-mail address on all correspondence and checks). If you have any questions, please direct them to my mailbox and I'll do my best to answer them. Thank you. Fletch Blanchard for BLANCHARD-L, a proud Sponsor of RootsWeb

    3. Here are a few more Admin. notes. 1. The Greetings/Guidelines message that is sent to all new subscribers, has been updated. You might want to check the new G/G on the B-L Web Page. Changes in some of the services available at RootsWeb are included plus information about GenConnect Boards and Surname Helper, what can be found on our Web Page and a brief note describing the Index-Line Databases (still available on the Web Page). Remember, as of 1 Jan 1999, Index-Lines are no longer requested for messages posted to the List. Much of the information on using these Databases, that had been in G/G, is now summarized on the web page. 2. List members are no longer able to obtain subscriber lists by sending an e-mail "get dist" command to RootsWeb. Our list was given permission to use this service but it has been discontinued for now until the situation is reviewed. Considerable discussion has taken place on the the Listowners Mail List. Tim Pierce, senior sysadmin at rootsweb.com, has indicated that he would like to allow "get dist" and make it optional with the listowner to decide if his/her members should have this privilege. Tim has also stated that permitting list members to have access to member lists has little if any affect on "spam" and is no different from having a listowner/manager offer to send out subscriber lists to members who request them. Some listowners are vehemently opposed to reinstating "get dist", arguing that this is a violation of the "privacy" of the list members. I don't happen to share that opinion but will abide by whatever RootsWeb and our list members decide on this issue. 3. My suggestion for having our members send me summary data on their BLANCHARD line so it can be shared with the membership, is on hold. This involves some of the same questions that have been raised about "get dist" so I think we should wait until that is resolved. 4. I urge all our members to visit the BLANCHARD-L GenConnect Boards, especially the Query Board. Most of the other boards have not been 'discovered' yet but you may find some useful information in the queries that are appearing. Although the boards are under BLANCHARD-L supervision, they can be used by anyone, not just B-L members. Some people who don't want to be involved with mail lists, prefer to post notes to the Boards and check from time to time to see if they have been answered. The Boards are just another tool to help us fill in our family history and our experience with them is too brief to understand yet how they can be used effectively to enhance the BLANCHARD-L Mail List Fletch.

    3. I'm interested in making contact with anyone else researching Blanchards from Portsea in Hampshire, England. My husband's ancestor was Maria Annie Rosina BLANCHARD who was baptised in 1834 at St Mary's, Portsea, the daughter of John BLANCHARD and Maria Rosina STEPHENS. John was a Carpenter of Landport at the time. Maria's brother, John Richard BLANCHARD was baptised at St Mary's in 1837. Regards from Sue Boyland Western Australia

    3. First, I'd like to thank all the List Members who have supported BLANCHARD-L over the 2 1/2 years that we have been in operation. 1999 already looks like a great year for genealogy and I wish you success in your searches. The GenConnect Boards that were recently set up for BLANCHARD-L provide sites for sharing information on Queries, Deeds, Wills, Bible Records, Pension Records, Obituaries and Biographies as they relate to the BLANCHARD (and all name variants) Surname. Our new association with GenConnect at RootsWeb also offers us some very useful and powerful capabilities and I will try to describe one of them. _______________ SURNAME HELPER "Surname Helper indexes queries/obits/etc posted to the GenConnect system. This gives the user the opportunity to search GenConnect along with other sites at the same time. Surname Helper will query the GenConnect system on a weekly basis for each site. GenConnect will respond with all of the queries/obits/etc posted for that site and Surname Helper will store the surnames and URL for each item. Since the index for the entire site is refreshed each week, any items deleted from the GenConnect system will then be deleted from the Surname Helper system." _______________ Here are three methods for using Surname Helper. Site surname search page for all BLANCHARD GenConnect Boards: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/surhelp-bin/srchsite.pl?site=88BLANCHAR Use this site to search all surnames that have been included in the "Surnames:" line for messages posted to any of our 7 Boards at GenConnect. Enter a surname, choose any limitations or restrictions you want to impose on the search and "Submit". The Surname Search Results will be returned and you can link from a message line to the full text of the message. **This is a good example of the need to include appropriate 'surnames' with your posts to the Boards.** Be sure to add all the surnames mentioned in the post. Do not include those that are only 'related" to the people in the post; the 'searcher' will be disappointed to find nothing about these names! Site index page http://cgi.rootsweb.com/surhelp-bin/surindx.pl?site=88BLANCHAR This site also works with the GenConnect Boards and is similar to the 'search page' but here you select the first initial of a surname that you are seaching, from the A - Z Index. All surnames that begin with that letter are returned in table form as: Surname - Post Type - Date . Click on the 'Surname' block for a message that you want to retrieve. Site: search for a surname http://cgi.rootsweb.com/surhelp/srchall.html If you enter a surname and select 'all sites, 'all posts' and 'all geographica areas', this site will return all instances where that surname is found on | any | locations that have been registered and indexed with Surname Helper. These include GenConnect Boards, USGenWeb County Pages, WorldGenWeb Pages, Personal Web Pages, Genealogical Societies, etc., etc.!! Remember, Mail Lists at RootsWeb are newcomers to GenConnect and Surname Helper. Many other organizations have been using these for quite some time. Today, the surname BLANCHARD returned 275 'hits'. Try it, I think you will be amazed. More about this in another Admin. post to the List. I am a novice as far as GenConnect & Surname Helper are concerned but will try to pass along to you what I am able to learn. If some of you have had experience with these services, please correct any of my interpretations and add your own so that we all can make the best use of these genealogical tools. Fletch

They are evidently not the ones you wanted. > One more thing, I have found records of them being warned out of several > towns, can anyone tell me why they would do this? It was standard practice in New England to warn out all new residents as soon as they arrived. The social "safety net" in those days was the responsibility of the town of residence of anyone stricken with poverty. By warning out a newcomer, the town served notice that it would not be responsible in case anything bad happened to such folk -- instead, the responsibility would remain with the *former* home town. There was not usually any effort to drive newcomers out, once the formal warning was issued. John Chandler

    2. Hi List, My name is Jo Ann Sollazo and I am researching Daniel Blanchard abt 1784 to 1853 married to a Ruth or Clarissa? Living in Starksboro, VT at time of death. I was wondering if any of you have a connection to him? His wife is listed as a part Indian and so are he grandchildren on birth records. I found a marriage record for a Danile and Ruth Hunt in Mass 1800 and records of other children to them born in Mass at the family history center in the IGI I am not sure if this is my Daniel and Ruth or not. If any one knows who this Daniel and Ruth maybe please let me know!! I am really hoping it is them. One more thing, I have found records of them being warned out of several towns, can anyone tell me why they would do this? Thanks in advance! Jo Ann Sollazo
