    3. I was hoping that my 'Administration 3/22/99' message to the List last week would serve as a reminder to consider the appropriateness of all messages that you post to BLANCHARD-L. As list manager, I must try to balance the desire to be as "hands off" as possible with the need to maintain a few rules and regulations so our List can serve its purpose which is genealogy. This is why I asked that you first send to me, any message whose contents might be of questionable value. In this way, I can review it and then discuss it with you. I hope you will agree that this is a reasonable plan. Thanks. Fletch

    3. I received this information from a very reliable source! She is microbiologist in Phoenix Arizona. Take advantage if you wish! Took a few "reloads" to get this site up because it is so busy, but could be fairly worth while stock to be in the beginning on...and its free... This company is offering free stock, like Yahoo did at its launch (the last company that tried this is now listed on NASDAQ). 1) Go to http://www.monsterbook.com/SignUp2.asp which is a known and respected company. You can get all the info about the company by going to the main page if you want. 2) Enter referral No.849448 when you sign up for a free internet directory. 3) Once you sign up you will get your own number and for every person you get to sign up, you will receive $10 which you can use toward their stock or receive in cash. 4) Hurry, they are only taking a certain number. (first one million people) It is already over 100,000. Remember, referral No.849448 Note: CNBC said this company should go through the roof when it launches. HUGS dawn p.s. Feel free to give my referral number to your friends if you don't want to take advantage *S*

    1. Privacy of the Living & Genealogy Ediquette:
    2. BLANCHARD
    3. Hi All: I am posting the following 'words of wisdom' which I just read on <Rootsweb-Review@rootsweb.com>. I too have exchanged personal genealogy information with a stranger & lo & behold .. found it as part of a family webpage. It was corrected, but, the website had already been viewed & all the information is out in cyberspace. Hope this will help all from posting things they may regret. Please read & heed & pass on to friends not on this list. Cheerio, Martha OXYMORON: PRIVACY AND THE INTERNET by Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG <RWR-editors@rootsweb.com> Genealogists use RootsWeb and the incredible power of the Internet to learn more about ancestors and to find far-flung cousins. However we are caught in an incongruous position on privacy matters. Everyone wants their privacy respected, but are you invading that of your relatives? Technology enables us to share genealogical information easily and quickly via e-mail, mailing lists, chat rooms, bulletin boards, newsgroups, GEDCOMs, CDs and Web sites. In our eagerness to obtain and to share data we forget that our living family members have a right to privacy. We also post personal details about ourselves that we would not put on the local supermarket bulletin board. Aunt Martha might reveal her real birth date and confess that she had a child out of wedlock when she was 19. Sweet old Uncle Jim may tell you that he has been married and divorced six times. However, you are invading their privacy if you publish this information or if you share it with others via a GEDCOM or family group sheets. Information on home pages, bulletin boards, and mailing lists is electronic publication. It is OK to collect and compile information about your living relatives, but don't share it (unless you have their permission, of course) with others -- in any format via any means. During the preparation of a talk for my local genealogical society on this subject, I searched hundreds of genealogy-related home pages. At one I found the names and details about everyone in the family, including when and where they were all born, right down to a one-month-old grandson, listing the hospital in which he was born. One researcher reports, "In just one file that I downloaded . . . I found more than 200 names of persons born within the last 70 years .." Another notes, "I was shocked and dismayed to find that someone had copied my entire GEDCOM and put it up on their Web site. While I have no objection to anyone using my dead ancestors, this person had included the living as well." Now, I've heard from several genealogists who claim it does not matter what we put up on our home pages or share on the Internet since "this information is all public information, anyway." Another one argues that "unless and until they quit putting births, deaths and marriages in the newspapers the basic relationships and names are and will remain public info." I have no quarrel about marriage and death records -- if they are really obtained from public sources. However, I asked several correspondents to provide me with the source of the birth information posted on their home pages, and guess what I learned? In every instance the data were either supplied by a cousin or obtained from a GEDCOM that someone had sent them. In other words, they had not found the information in a public source at all. Take a look at the policy posted at "Don't Mess with the Living, Texas" <http://home.sprynet.com/~harrisfarm/warning.htm>: "It is the policy of the Texas GenWeb Project to protect the rights and privacy of our living relatives. We strongly encourage all involved to do their best not to place information on the Internet about anyone who is still living, unless you have their express permission to do so." Among the suggestions for ways to protect living family members are: -- When requesting information (via e-mail, chat, queries, etc.) do not include personal information on living persons. -- When responding to requests for information, especially to someone you really do not know, do not provide them with personal information about living persons. They could post it on the Web or do who knows what else with it. -- Before sharing GEDCOM files with others, expunge information on all living persons. Programs such as GEDClean, GEDLiving, and GEDPrivy will do this for you. -- If you have a genealogy Web site, remove information about all living persons. (Check Cyndi's Genealogy Home Page Construction Kit <http://www.cyndislist.com/construc.htm> for tips and links to the several GEDCOM utility programs that will exclude such data.) British genealogists are using the "GEN100" logo to signify that their Web site respects a cut-off date of 100 years, and to advise that information which is less than 100 years old will not be divulged. Many Americans use January 1920 as the cut-off point, since that is the most recent federal census available to the public. We should exercise good manners and respect the privacy of our families -- those generous relatives who have shared information with us or who shared with a cousin of a cousin. Additionally, there is another and growing problem -- identity theft. Why make it easy for cyberthieves to steal your or a loved one's identity? When you post public messages about your research, it is sufficient to say you are researching a Cynthia Jones line. You don't have to reveal relationship by saying she is your mother or maternal grandmother. To learn more about identity theft and other privacy issues visit: <http://www.identitytheft.org/> and <http://www.privacyrights.org/>. In the pursuit of our ancestors, let's not hurt ourselves or our living family members. Think before you post or share data. * * * * *

    3. I thought that I would like to pass this info on so that it may help anyone that might be able to use it. In the Town where I have lived most of my life Plainville Massachusetts USA there was a man whom, lived down the street from my grandmothers house where , I lived for quite a few years. His name was WILLIAM BLANCHARD but, I always knew him as "Bill Blanchard" I think that he may have been related either to the Thomalsens?? (Close) or to Hamiltons or "Mobriant" (Close) as these were the Family names associated with him. Plainville has Tax records etc. in the old Town Reports available in the Library here. and also Historical Commission has records. His and my Grandmother Bagleys were on Walnut Street when it was still country, we didn't have street numbers. Best regards to the Blanchard list where I found where my middle name came from, "Gil" Blanchard Bagley

    2. Fletcher Blanchard
    3. I've tried to keep the administration posts to BLANCHARD-L at a bare minimum but from time to time, it seems advisable to share a few thoughts with you. 1. Please continue to observe the guidelines for posting messages to BLANCHARD-L / -D. Before you hit the "Send" button, be sure you are sending to the correct address. An easy way to remember is that the -request address is for requests/commands to RootsWeb to sub, unsub, and conduct other business with RootsWeb. All posts to be distributed to the members, go to BLANCHARD-L@rootsweb.com. 2. The List Archives at RootsWeb are a tremendously valuable asset. If you haven't been using them, you should take some time to become familiar with them. This is especially important for newer members. A quick check of our archived messages will give you a good idea of what topics (and people) have been discussed in the nearly 2 1/2 years that we have been operating. The databases on our Web Page are another resource that you should be using. Here again, it takes some time to get the knack of navigating around these but there is a tremendous amount of information to be found and knowing who is and who isn't in the databases will give you a much better position for interacting with the list members. If you have suggestions for other BLANCHARD databases to add to our page, let me know. 3. Marc Nozell at RootsWeb is perfecting his "Threaded Archives", a project that he started last year. This is in a 'beta' test phase and, though the site is not top secret, it has been suggested that listowners not publicize this widely until they are fully functional. The "Threaded Archives" may eventually become <the> List Archives at RootsWeb. The heart of the system is Subject: lines. Posts to a list and the replies that they generate are "threaded" together using common Subject: lines so that a reader can follow a particular discussion. Without appropriate and consistent Subject: lines, the "threads" cannot be maintained. Please adopt the habit of adding a meaningful Subject: line to all your posts. Whether or not the "Threaded Archives" become the standard, this is an important rule for all Mail Lists. The GenConnect Boards use this technique for managing their posts so you can see how it will work for the Mail Lists; which brings us to the next topic. 4. Our GenConnect Boards have not "taken off" but are gradually being discovered. They do not compete with our List but offer another way to communicate with people interested in the BLANCHARD (and all name variants) surname. Two reminders: when you enter surnames in the "Surname list" block for any board, be sure that these are only the surnames that are mentioned in your post to the board and please observe the instructions that Queries should only be posted to the Query Board; not to any of the other Boards. 5. If you have any questions at any time about BLANCHARD-L, that are not covered in the Greetings/Guidelines, please send them to me. If I can't answer them, I'll find someone who can. If you are not sure that the subject of a message you'd like to post is appropriate for the List, send it to me first so we can discuss it. I hope you don't find our 'Guidelines' too restrictive. They are intended to provide direction and help in using the List to its best advantage. As of today, we have 254 members with 216 subbed to Mail and 38 subbed to Digest. Fletch

    2. Jack, Thank you for looking that up for me, but I am still not sure if thats my Daniel!! Here is part of a letter I recieved after writing to the list about a marriage record in the IGI on Danile and Ruth Hunt. I wrote this : record for a Danile and Ruth Hunt in Mass 1800 and records of other children and John sent me this back. Those two were married in Abington in 1803, and both of them died there in the 1830s. They are evidently not the ones you wanted. John Chandler > .So What do you think, can't be then.? Pat has checked everything I can think of We had some of the stuff on her page. Looked thru rolls of film from Starsboro, nothing is really therefpr Vitals was told were destroyed in a fire. Thank you so much for looking at this for me. We have been working on Daniel for a year with not one break. Jo Ann :)

    3. To Fletch Sorry this has gone to the list again, for some reason my SP does not like your E-mail address In answer to some of your questions, Rick was using British Telecoms Directory Enquires which was costing him around $8 per minute, my name happened to be the nearest to his search name so I ended up chatting to the guy." I shall blame my Dad for that one" Rick is not one of the BLANCHARD-L- List members, On his E-mail address this is what he told me SLOUIS7735 AMERICA ON LINE any help with this would go a long way. I tried explaining my E-mail address to him but Rick didn't understand the @ sign., his daughter who is the P.C. buff was out at the time. I don't think it's a case of somebody wanting to be "lost", more than likely a case of long distant relatives not keeping in touch. I will contact the relatives on this side of The Pond to allow them the choice. If I could take up your offer to telephone Rick and ask him to confirm his snail and E-mail address as his New York twang was rather strong for my English ears, I don't want to pass on duff information to his relatives after this. Is it snowing in N.Y. yet? Regards Alan in a warm and sunny spring morning in Dunstable,Beds,UK

    3. Hi Fletch Sorry this has gone to the list, tried your E-mail address a couple of times with no luck. On Sunday (G.M.T) I received a phone call from one of your countrymen asking if I could track down a living relative for him. Well good news for him I have found his relatives, but I am a little concerned about handing over the information. When I checked the address and telephone number he gave me, no match could be found. So I did a reverse number check, out popped two different people at two different addresses in N.Y., not what I expected. Also he has no knowledge of the Blanchard List or his own E-mail address. Can I ask you to take a look at it for me, before I contact his relatives, and confirm if the man is genuine. 2. Ranald Blanchard
    3. Hello Gil. On March 13th, your message stated: > My Grandfather was named Aubrey "Blanchard" Tupper and > I am named after him. He was born in Weston Kings District > Nova Scotia on August 20, 1874 For others on the List, Weston is located in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley area, about 14 miles west of Kentville, Kings Co., N.S. I have two Tupper marriages into the Blanchard lineage I am researching; one, John, to Elizabeth WADDELL and the other, Angus, to Hannah Blanchard McCURDY. These two Tuppers were cousins. Your grandfather, b. 1874, may have been named after Aubrey BLANCHARD (1847 - 1899) who became a lawyer and was a partner in with my grt. grt. grandfather, William Henry BLANCHARD in Windsor, N.S. This law office continued through three more generations. I know they handled cases in Kentville, where other Blanchard family members lived. Aubrey's father was George Augustus BLANCHARD who had been a Judge of Probate for Kings County and later was appointed First County Judge for District Number Four which included Kings Co., Hants Co., and Colchester Co. I hope this may be the answer to your "62 year old mystery". George's cousin, Hiram BLANCHARD, was in the Nova Scotia government of Sir Charles TUPPER. When TUPPER left to run for federal office, Hiram took his place. This was at the time of Confedration and Hiram became the first premier of Nova Scotia in Confederation, but only for a couple of months. - - Rannie in Mount Uniacke, Nova Scotia P.S. William Henry BLANCHARD married twice. His second wife was the widow of the above Angus TUPPER, and what was her middle name - 'Blanchard'. - RNBU

It is hard to tell which as they were writen in almost as an after thought by clerk (1881). But...Frank BLANCHARD married Philomen PLANT, so that would not be his mothers maiden name, right? 2. John F. Chandler
    3. As Rannie said, Deacon John can be found in the files on the web site. About the wife of John Bent -- as far as I can tell, her maiden name is completely unknown. I believe the guess at "Blanchard" was purely the result of a misunderstanding, and has persisted only because there is no information on her origins. Needless to say, it is far more likely that her name was "Smith". The basis for the misunderstanding is the well-known fact that John Bent was indeed the brother-in-law of immigrant Thomas Blanchard -- because Thomas married John's sister Agnes (2nd marriage for each). However, the Bents and Blanchards were not close. John Chandler
