    3. Surname Resources at RootsWeb On 8 June 1999, I mentioned the "new look" at RootsWeb and outlined the features of the "clusters" that can be reached from the "Surname Resources at RootsWeb" page http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/ . For any of the available surnames that you select, you will be directed to links to a collection of resources, namely; Personal WebSites, Projects, Transcriptions, Primary Records, General Links, Mailing Lists, GenConnect, Guestbook, and Calendar. You can go to the BLANCHARD resource page directly at: http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/b/l/BLANCHARD/ to investigate any or all of these. With little or no input from Listowners, RW has set up a site for "one stop genealogy shopping" on the Web. I mentioned briefly that RW used the surnames posted to the RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) as the basis for generating several thousand new surname clusters to add to those that they formed for surnames, like BLANCHARD, that had already established Mail Lists, Web Pages, or suites of GenConnect Boards at RootsWeb. The only variant surnames of even remote interest to us are BLANCH and BLANSHAR, but the variant names that I requested and are still shown on our original GenConnect Boards; BLANCARD, BLANCHER, BLANSHARD, etc. were not added. At the time that I posted a proposal for how the 'variant' surnames might be handled, to the Listowners-L List, that list was being moderated and the moderator chose not to distribute the message which was judged inappropriate for the List. It was suggested that I post it to the CIRB (Cluster Issue Resolution Board) List which I did. Tim Pierce, responding for RootsWeb, rejected the proposal. No other Listowner has posted any comments about the proposal or Tim's response. Accordingly, here is the position that BLANCHARD-L has taken. Since BLANCH and BLANSHAN are not known variants of the BLANCHARD surname, we will not request to 'adopt' these clusters. (As of today, no messages have been posted to these sites, other than the welcome message from RW.) We will not request new clusters for the known variant surnames of BLANCHARD since there is no method for having these sites serve only to direct persons to the corresponding sites for BLANCHARD resources at RootsWeb. This means that if someone else requests these variant surnames we will be unable to centralize the efforts of BLANCHARD (et al) researchers, even though RW has offered to provide links among related surname sites. 3. * Happy 3rd Bithday to BLANCHARD-L! * Here is a review of the brief history of our Mail List. On 20 June 1996, the BLANCHARD Family Discussion List was established at RmGate, Indiana University, under the direction of Larry Stephens. Later, it became the BLANCHARD Family Genealogy List (BFGL) and in May, 1997, we moved to RootsWeb, under the direction of Brian Leverich and Karen Isaacson, where we became BLANCHARD-L. In the past three years, we have probably had 300-400 different subscribers but one of the differences between mail lists and the more traditional family genealogy societies is that members come and go much more freely. As of today, we have 260 subscribers so we are one of the mid-size lists at RootsWeb. Because of concerns about posting personal member information on the Internet, we no longer publish a member list but your list owner/manager maintains a list with whatever information a subscriber chooses to share. I encourage you to make use of the Mail List as well as the Web Page, the GenConnect Boards and the searchable Archives which are maintained for your benefit. A few guidelines have been established for the List in order to make it more productive but they should not discourage you from posting to the List. Please share whatever you have on your BLANCHARD and variant surname lines and thanks for your continued support. Fletch

    3. Changes are underway at RootsWeb/GenConnect but until they stabilize, I'll only try to outline them for you. Following the National Genealogical Society Annual Meeting last month, RootsWeb arrived at a decision to expand and improve their 'look' on the Net, particularly with regard to new users. While still maintaining their goal of providing free access to genealogical material for anyone who can access the Internet, in a sense, RW must 'compete' with the other large suppliers of genealogical information. As I see it, RW is not competing directly for dollars but their ability to secure financial support, such as through banner ads, will depend on how well they can attract and retain a large share of Internet genealogical researchers. If you consider that only about 7% of those who have mail lists, web pages, archives, GenConnect Boards, etc. at RootsWeb, provide any financial support at the various contributor, sponsor, and donor levels, you can appreciate why RW must find other souces to fund their rapidly expanding operations. For now, the new 'look' involves two components. First, RW has set up "Surname Clusters" where a researcher can find all the resources at RootsWeb that relate to a particular surname (later, links to other non-RW resources may be included). The site, http://resources.rootsweb.com/surnames/ is called [Surname Resources at RootsWeb] and shows an A-Z index. Selecting 'B' leads to ["B" Surnames at RootsWeb]. If you select BLANCHARD, you link to the [BLANCHARD (B452) at ROOTSWEB] 'Cluster' area which displays all the related resources at RootsWeb for BLANCHARD, which already had an established Mail List, Web Page, and GenConnect Boards. For the second part of the new 'look', RW added many <new> 'Clusters', using the surnames posted on the RootsWeb Surname List (RSL) as an indication of the 'popularity' or 'interest' in surnames world-wide. They added the first 5,000 most popular/active, then the next 5,000 and I am not sure what the total number is now. Today (6/8/99), RW posted a notice to the listowners-announce List that "Our 'cluster team' is ready to accept requests from volunteers who would like to help administer the new Surname Resource Clusters". My understanding is that <anyone> can request to take over new Clusters but the managers of existing genealogical sites at RootsWeb may be given preference, especially if the new Cluster surname is a variant of the established surname site. The subject which has provoked the most discussion, is "what to do about surname variants"? Unfortunately, RW failed to consult with the listowners/managers of established sites to get their input on choosing the new Clusters and deciding what are the 'true surname variants'. As a result, some of the new Clusters are for existing name variants but there are no new Clusters for many of the other legitimate name variants. Taking BLANCHARD as an example, as of today, the only BLANCHARD surname variants among the new 'Clusters' are BLANCH and BLANSHAN while BLANCARD, BLANCHER, and BLANSHARD (the three variants that have been displayed on our GenConnect Boards) and some other 'possibles', BLANCHET, BLANCHAR, BLANCHETTE, and BLANCHART, are all missing. I have asked John Chandler to help me sort this all out and decide what would be best for our BLANCHARD interests at RootsWeb and here is a proposal. 1. We have no interest in any of the new RW Surname Clusters that are clearly not variants of the BLANCHARD surname. 2. We request that RW set up additional Clusters for all BLANCHARD name variants that we believe are legitimate. 3. Rather than <adopt> any of the new Clusters, we propose the following to RootsWeb: when someone subscribes to one of the BLANCHARD 'variant' Clusters, RW will send the subscriber a brief 'Welcome' message that : a. explains, by way of a brief essay, why the surname is considered a 'variant' of BLANCHARD. b. suggests that the subscriber unsub from this 'variant' Cluster and sub to the BLANCHARD Cluster. c. includes a pointer to the BLANCHARD Surname Resource site to facilitate this changeover. This same essay with a prominent link to the appropriate BLANCHARD site, would appear on all the associated 'variant' Boards, etc. which are, in a sense 'dummy boards', since they serve only to redirect the researcher. Comments: It should be possible to implement this proposal with only minor changes in the 'Cluster' concept. New users can start searching a particular surname but are courteously directed to the 'root' surname. Consolidating all the true surname variants will foster the vitality of the 'root' surname sites and promote the basic objective of sharing information among 'cousins'. ____________ I am sending this proposal to the Listowners-L Mail List to see if it has any support among the listowners and to get some reaction from the RootsWeb personnel that monitor and respond to 'Listowners'. As always, I welcome your comments. Fletch

    3. This notice was recently sent to listowners by Tim Pierce at RootsWeb. >This is to let you know that we've written a new filter for HTML >messages on RootsWeb lists. Instead of bouncing all HTML messages as >we've done for the last year or so, the new filter just converts the >HTML to plain text. >List admins don't have to do anything special; the filters are already >enabled. This change ought to result in less mail getting bounced >unnecessarily from your lists and fewer confused subscribers. This will reduce the 'bounce' problems but still wastes valuable archive storage space so I suggest that you continue to turn off HTML in your mail program when posting to BLANCHARD-L. Fletch

Do you have proof that Moses is Jane's son? I think there was some confusion there with the children. I haven't gone back any farther. I have Jane's parents. The rest of my line goes, THEOPHILUS & PATIENCE JEFFORD, JOHN & ABIGAIL, REUBEN & AMY SEAMONS, IRA & ANNA EASTMAN, HERMAN & HULDAH (DEAN) HISCOCK, ORRIN & EMILY A. DEWEY, LOTTIE BELLE BLANCHARD & HAZEN JAMES COLBY, HENRY DEAN COLBY & LUCY LORETTA MAYVILLE, GLENDON (MY DAD) & VIRGENE (MOM), then ME. Mary Ladd

    3. Greetings, Bob. If it's sources you want, you've come to the right place. Take a look at our web site and look into the (large) data files there. In particular, you will be interested in the "Thomas + 'Joseph'" file and the "George" file. Thomas[1]'s wives and children are pretty well pinned down, but George[2]'s are rather poorly connected: there is some evidence that George had two wives, possbibly both named Mary, but their maiden names are not known, and the order of the children is pretty haphazard. For more details, see the web site... http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~blanch-l/blpref.html John

    3. Janet, Yes, your line is part of the "standard" Rhode Island Blanchard family. A few comments: > Moses Blanchard b. 1710 Providence RI d. 1 Apr 1771 I've seen those dates before, but have not yet confirmed them. > married Anne Whaley in Warwick RI 1 Jan 1734/5 The marriage is in the Warwick VR, and the record there says explicitly that Moses was son of William and Ann daughter of Samuel. > Samuel Blanchard b. 18 Aug 1750 prob RI, d. 6 Oct 1824 Samuel's birth is in the Coventry VR (doesn't list the mother's name). He also died in Coventry and was buried there in cemetery #99. His will of 1824 mentions a daughter Sally Letson, among others, but none of his children's births were entered in the Coventry VR, nor is her marriage entered there. John

    2. IOROBERT . JO'HARA
    3. Greetings, Blanchard people. I'm new to this surname, and have just made a link to the Massachusetts immigrant Thomas Blanchard, said to have come from London in 1639 in the "Jonathan", and his son George b abt 1618. I have the information fron Savage's _Genealogical Dictionary_ and Wyman's _Charlestown_, neither of these authors give full details on Thaoms and George's families; in particular, each of them had several wives, and I'd like to be able to assign their children correctly to each of the wives. I am new to this surname, and so am not familiar with the standard references, if any. Is there a standard (reliable) publication that details these immigrants? (For example, a good paper in the _NEHGS Register_.) There is a lot on the web of course, but it is often conflicting and rarely given with sources. Many thanks.
