I have traced most of this family to about 1750. William Riley Blair's father was Ellison Thomas Blair II who married Louisa Jane Peters, then his father was Ellison Thomas I who married Hannah Stone, then his father was John Blair (of South Carolina and fought in the rev. I would NEVER say anyone is wrong in their research, nor that I am correct; however I believe you have two different BLAIR families mixed up. My Patriot ancestor is Major Thomas Blair born about 1738 in Northern Ireland. His daughter, Martha Blair married her first cousin, John L. Blair born October 22, 1767 in Rowan County, NC. The father of this John L. Blair was John D. Blair born about 1742 in Northern Ireland. This of course makes John D. Blair and Major Thomas Blair brothers. These two men MAY have had an older brother named Hugh Blair born about 1718 in Scotland. These three brothers (and others) came to New Castle, Delaware in 1746 and settled in Rising Sun, Pennsylvania, which later became Maryland and they had to leave, going to Rowan County, NC in the 1760's. This Hugh Blair, born about 1718 is suppose to have married Mary Dawson, but I have seen no proof of this marriage. However, one of their sons was named John "The Miller" Blair born April 28, 1749 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and I show that is was this John Blair who married Jean Gamble on February 9, 1771 in Gilford County, NC. I have not seen any proof that this Hugh Blair was the older brother of my Thomas Blair. The father of my Major Thomas Blair is a John Blair believed to have been born about 1700 who MAY have married Martha Blythe, but again, I have seen no proof of this marriage. I do have a land deed where my Thomas Blair named his father as John Blair, but which one is anyone's guess. I also have doubts that Hugh Blair was the brother of my Thomas Blair. My guess is that he was an uncle, but that is just as I said, a guess. I hope this helps you in some way.
