Fellow Blair Society Members, Years ago I read with interest in the old first Blair Society News Letters, that the Blair Society was founded to purchase and preserve the home of Rev. James Blair, who started William & Mary College, the first college in what became the USA. As I recall one of the founding members of the Blair Society was a personal friend of John D. Rockefellow, Jr. who later purchased most of the abandoned homes of what once was Williamsburg, the capital of VA. and restored the town. Some years ago, my wife and I went to Williamsburg for the purpose of finding Rev. James Blair's home that the Blair Society purchased and restored. We had trouble finding the home because the town is "Trapped in the 1776's Tonight" for those of you old enough to remember the 1950's. We also found Rev. James Blair's brother's home, which is owned by a private owner, and someone lives there, so you can not visit that home. His son was appointed to the first U.S. Supreme Court by President George Washington, and rode to New York with the President when the country began! Recently, in the latest issue of the Colonial Williamsburg magazine, I read an article which gives the credit to Dr. William Archer Goodwin for getting John D. Rockefellow, Jr. involved in the restoration of Williamsburg. I am sure Dr. Godwin deserved much credit for his endeavors, but why was the Blair Society not even mentioned in this article? I support the Williamsburg Foundation primarily because of my life membership in the Blair Society, and have proudly told them of this story several times. I have included above the only E-Mail address I have found in the magazine, which is the address of Ned Frey, and is for advertising ONLY! There is an article in this last Colonial Williamsburg magazine written by President, Colin Campbell, and I whole hearted agree with his concern that our history is being lost and not taught in our public schools. I have two different sets of 50 full size flags and I spend much of my time going to schools and civic groups , not so much teaching our history, but trying to kindle an interest in our history! In Texas, where I live, if the information is not on a state wide test, the information is not being taught. Many of our children do not know who the President of the USA is, or who our first President was! Many do not know who Christopher Columbus was, or when or what he discovered! Last year on Columbus Day (October 12, 1492 just in case you have forgotten) I was speaking to a group of students in a town named for Columbus, and the children did not know who he was, or the names of his 3 ships! I could go on and on, and as my wife will tell you, I DO! However, my purpose is to ask some of our Blair Society members of "note" to contact the Williamsburg Foundation, the Colonial Williamsburg magazine and Rosanne Thaiss Butler, who wrote the article about William Godwin, and give all three the complete history of the Blair Society and ask that another article be published in the magazine telling the "Rest of the Story" as Paul Harvey would say. I would certainly like to learn more about the adoption (name of Aunt, etc.) so I can add it into the tree I'm building for my brother-in-law. Do you happen to know if there are additional scanned source documents, pictures, and FindAGrave records and/or headstones? This makes the story so much more compelling for the future generations; unfortunately living in California makes it difficult to do it ourselves! Here is a summary (details available if you wish) of what I know about Elizabeth Wilson KIRKWOOD's descendants: Elizabeth Wilson KIRKWOOD (1858-1915) m. 1880 Thomas MCDONALD (1859-1939) ==> Janette Harriet MCDONALD (1883-1967) m. 1911 George Raymond SWARTZ (1877-1967) ==> then follows 3 generations of living family members (I respect the importance of maintaining their privacy; please email me directly at harrietgirdley@yahoo.com and I will provide them with your contact information). Author: JDuggan6734 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.blair/2133.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi there. Thank you for your messages. Yes, many of my early research I did not add in my sources but I do have the papers. I am a direct descendant of James Buntin (Kirkwood) and Jean Blair through my grandmother. Many of the Kirkwood descendants were buried at Greenwood as well as Cypress Hills and a few other cemeteries in NYC. James Kirkwood (nee Buntin) was adopted by his aunt (Kirkwood) in Glasgow prior to coming to the US. His mother died early and unsure what happened to his father. I had letters from an aunt from NYC that alluded to this adoption and the name change. I would be interested in any information you may have on the descendants of Elizabeth Wilson Kirkwood. By the way, Wilson was the surname of the aunt of James Buntin as his father married a Wilson in Scotland. Hope this helps.
