I'm trying to find current family of Dr. Blair of York, England, alive in 1946. He had a daughter Beatrice who married Arthur John Minchin.
I am seeking help with the abobe lady. The OPRs record that "Lachlan Brown and Mary Blair both of this parish gave in their names to be proclaimed in order of marriage on the 17th Nov. and were married on the 19th Currt. 1793." The "Mutual Disposition and Settlement by Lachlan Brown and Mary Blair, Spouses" was entered into at Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1820, That document lists Archibald McKELLAR, George PARK and Thomas BLAIR as neighbors at Gourock. The wording perhaps suggests that those people were more than neighbours and may have been related to either Mary or Lachlan, or from Stralachlan. The document also "appoints Duncan Blair Mariner in Gourock and Duncan Blair Shoemaker in Greenock ... to be Tutors and Curators for such of our said children as may be in a state of pupillarity or minority... " suggesting that the two Duncans were related to Mary. I wonder if anyone can help? Bill Brown Sydney
For those of you who do not follow the message boards I am copying a new message from Mike K. Williams of Pittsylvania County, VA. Mike is the angel who has preserved many early records of Pittsylvania County and has surveyed local cemeteries transcribing headstones and taking photos. I am only posting to Blair, Reynolds and Aaron folks as those are the only direct ancestors I have among the group. I would urge you to repost to other lists if you see any names of relatives. Are there descendants of the three families listed above living in or near Pittsylvania County? I know that this is feeble offer considering what would be probably a big undertaking but I would be happy to contribute funds to assist in upkeep of these cemeteries if someone were willing to find someone who could help clear them out. This is just an off the cuff offer in the morning pre-coffee so if anyone has a better suggestion about a continual program to keep the cemeteries up please jump in with suggestions. judith arnn-knight list owner aaron-l This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Cemetery Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3AC.2ACE/1409 Message Board Post: A partial list of family burial grounds in Pittsylvania Co. that are endangered/run down that I have visited within the past year. This list does not include dozens of cemeteries that are located off main highways down farm roads that have been blocked off by the current land owners, most of whom don't reside there. Most have no fences and are being covered by weeds and fallen trees from storms, etc. Some are in remote areas where no one lives anymore. Luckily, the VA-NC Piedmont Genealogy Society has inscriptions for most of these, gathered over the past 40 years before they became inaccessable. Endangered are: Aaron, Faulker; Allen, James G.; Barbour, Berry; Barber, Wm; Barber-Rorer; Barker, Clark H.; Bennett, Booker; Berger, Seth; Blair, Wm A.Y.; Bradley, Thomas; Bryan, George; Burnett, Henry T.; Clopton, Robert; Cocke, Guy; Cocke, W.H.H.; Collins, David; Conway, Christopher; Crawley, Wm; Cumby, Wylie; Dallas, J.T.; Dalton, Wm; Davis, James W.; Dickenson, Rev. Griffeth; Dickenson, Wm A.; Dodson, Green; Glass, Willis; Goggin Cem; Hays, Ambrose; Henderson, W.T. Hodges, Adolphus; Hudson, Howard; Jones, Elisha; Lea-Gunter; McDowell, Wm V.; McLaughlin, Charles; Moorman, Achilles; Owen, Bruce; Parsons, Martha; Poindexter, Thomas; Reynolds, Charles; Rowles, Wm; Scholfield, Jacob; Shelhorse Cem.; Simpson, Wm R.; Smith, Edmund; Terry-Ford Cem.; Trent, James; Vaden, Granville; Wall, Emard; Womack-Power Cem.; Yeatts, Oba. It is particularly sad that the burial site on Hickeys Road of the beloved preacher Griffeth Dickenson (1757-1843) is in such bad shape. The graves have no fence around them and in the summer the stones are covered by tall weeds. The stones are barely readable. ______________________________
