Hi Lin, Have had some luck finding info on my blacksmith ancestor, Abner J. FARTHING who practiced from 1850-1890 in NC, TN, AR. & TX. There are some city directories, county histories, and railroad business directories (for cities along their lines). They are available in the local libraries, historical societies, and archives. Also his son John was working as a blacksmith. So you might check records on other members of the family. Let us know if you have any luck.
