I spent most of my time in NKP, and a about 3-5 days at each Utapao, Korat, and Udorn. MOST of that time was WORKING 14 hour days so my "free time was mostly sleep." I was in there just about 6 months after the official "end" of hostilities and we were sent in to "close" the bases, which was a Burn, chop and Blow-up process. Anything that couldn't be readily flown away was destroyed on site. There was still the threat from Laos and Cambodia (Khamir Rouge) "getting" the bases, and the Thais were a tad bit "unstable," the Mayaguez incident was not that long before. (May 1975) I really would have enjoyed a night or two in Downtown Bangkok, but it was "too dangerous" and we really had as you say, a "lock down" in progress. I wish I had had the time to "tour" the country, but I wasn't there long enough. (about 30 days total) Jeffery G.
