Are you sure it's rivalry? Maybe they just don't have enough in common. That's quite an age gap, and difference in development. Three year olds have ways of getting attention that drive older kids nuts! And your older one is at an age when he doesn't want his stuff messed with, wants his own private, untampered-with place. They can't play the same games, or enjoy the same shows on TV or the same friends. And the three year old will want to tag along everywhere. (My older brother is 8 years older than me.
