Doris, I can understand their hesitation if they themselves were not the victims. They know that making those waves is going to more than likely destroy the pervert's life. So, in a show of conscience, they hesitate to repeat a second hand story, especially from a child. But, when the victim is an adult now and knows the truth, and the pervert is still out there running around, I think it's a crime to keep quiet. When you do nothing to stop a child molester who has children available to them, it's just about the same as aiding and abetting them. The molesting doesn't stop. The perverts just stay in hiding. With the help of everyone around them that knows the truth. I called children's services in that county (this was in OH) and reported him---told them what she had said... and they investigated and forced him to have counseling. I doubt it corrected his lifelong behavior, but my dau. took her children and left that area....our gr daus were promised they'd never have to be around him again, and they weren't---this isn't always possible, I know. The thing I'm writing about is this---a great number of people who lived in that area who were either related or closely associated with that family came to my daughter and told her they had been molested by this same man when they were young---it had been happening for years and nobody did a thing!!! Isn't that terrible?? I think this is how it happens so often---people just don't want to 'make waves' in their own community, so it just goes on unmentioned... I don't think it ever stops---counseling or not.., but at least it can be brought to attention of the community. When I worked with this in Texas, I was appalled by how long it can go on without a mention ... I think most children tell someone, but most people didn't chose to respond appropriately. Please remember that the first time I mentioned it I was called a liar. Did he totally stop? My younger sisters, who were closer to his daughters in age, say he did not, he went after his own daughters. Did he go after anyone else? I really have no idea. If he did, he did the same with them. There is no way to know how many he approached. This is why we decided, when we became adults, to let the Lord handle it. The Lord will know about all of them.
