Trying to switch this to chat... Does anyone know what became of Smokey Rogers? He played with Cooley and Tex Williams and was one of the Sons of the Pioneers way back. All this was before I was born. Really! But...during the '50's, Smokey Rogers owned a place called the Bostonia Ballroom in El Cajon CA. I grew up about 6 blocks from that place. And Smokey lived in a little one-story art-and-crafts era bungalow on Bostonia St., then just a little dirt road, about 2 or 3 blocks from the ballroom. I used to walk by both the ballroom and his house on my way home from school. He had a TV show televised from the ballroom every weekday afternoon. For THREE HOURS!!! FIVE DAYS A WEEK!! In case any of you wonder how I OD'd on C/W at a young age... lol Anyway, my mom got me on his show for my third birthday, with a few other kids. A very clear memory for me. By sometime about 1960 or so, the TV show was gone and it seems like sometime after that Smokey moved to Apple Valley and had a ballroom type place up there. Don't know if he's alive or not. But, I sure do have memories of his show on tv, in black and white, on our little 12" screen with the convex sides, inside the "blonde" wood cabinet. The State of California charged that Spade "did willfully, on the night of April 3rd, kick, beat, and strangle Ella Mae Cooley, his wife." The crime took place at Spade's plush desert ranch near the community of Mojave, during a "wild, drunken attempt to reconcile their wrecked marriage." Spade entered a plea of ''not guilty and not guilty by reason of insanity." Spade liked to dress in "some of those $500 handmade western suits, white Stetson and a string tie and expensive boots."
