First off, there's more than one cause for a person to have high blood pressure and, consequently, there's more than one type of medication to treat it. Basically and very generalized: Some people have a tendency to water retention which, in turn, causes an increase in their blood pressure. They are generally prescribed medications that are diuretics to eliminate the excess fluid in their systems. Others are hypertensive due to stress and need beta- blockers to counter the signals generated as a result of the stress. Still others are a combination of the two and require a combination beta-blocker and diuretic. Exercise and diet are very important factors in helping to control blood pressure as is trying to reduce the factors that are causing the stress, if possible. Salt reduction is especially important to individuals who retain fluid. Best, SueB
