That may have changed since I was there in 1989. However, 72 hours is all that is needed to evaluate someone and institute permanent institutionalization. Perhaps they changed it to allow someone to get into immediate custody long enough to be given a closer look. In Oklahoma they don't even need a Baker Act to get you in jail for 72 hours. The police can put you in their jail for 72 hours and never even file any charges.
