I'm going to work under the supposition that DNA typing as done for horses is pretty much the same as for people here.... The Arabian Horse Registry used to require blood typing for each horse registered with them. Last year doing DNA was optional but this year it became a requirement. To register a horse with their organization one must first buy the DNA kit and then submit a minimum of 25 hairs plucked from their mane, making sure that the follicles come out with the hairs. My guess is that the typing is done from the follicles themselves rather than from the hair. Best, SueB
Sue, how is that regulated? how does the organization "know" that you have taken the hair from the horse that you say you have? you know I am not implying anything personally at you, I am just thinking is that how some "dealers" would get false history for a horse, then get more money for a foal or whatever on the basis that its from a particular lineage? I discovered what he had done only by contacting the Registry who, in turn, faxed me copies of the altered documents. These pretty much blew him out of the water in court, thank heaven!! Best, SueB
