Yes, they want sheep that memorize and follow blindly. Thinking only causes problems. If they'll just memorize, they'll ace the tests and that's the goal. I wish your daughter had pointed out to the teacher and principal that the Old Testament is regarded as an historical document. But, obviously they pick and choose what they want to believe. I'm glad she said what she had to say in front of the other kids--perhaps encouraging them to think objectively about it. Anything with "theory" in the name is not proven beyond a doubt or believed to be completely correct in all respects. She handled it well. I MISSED you guys!!! Date: Sun, 12 May 2002 21:25:52 -0400 Jack, My granddaughter was a senior in high school in south LA--in the public school---in honors class.... at one point near the end of her senior year, the teacher was discussing (in class) the theory of evolution---but stated it as absolute! Well, my Caty told her that it wasn't a fact--not necessarily absolutely true or false--but was a theory that might be partial truth, all truth, or no truth at all..... so the teacher asked her if she was a "creationist". Caty answered that she thought it made some sense to her that if one would refer to the "days" in the Genesis story as "era", she could easily combine both the creation story and the evolution theory--the teacher said the creation theory was just "theory"...so Caty answered that so was evolution, and that after all, they might be compatible, and it just seemed to her that either theory would need a beginning. So the teacher became furious and kicked her out of class, saying she was discussing religion and God---which wasn't allowed!! Caty pranced to the principal's office and called me, and we had a go-round about theories and facts....Caty refused to back down, and she lost that credit...nearly lost her honor status...but was willing to do that in order to "make a point".....she graduated with honors, as she was accepted into another class and aced it ... Maybe that's why they don't want any abstract thinkers in schools.....? LOL Doris....A Texan in Georgia..... Still shaking the family tree and dodging the nuts after 30+ years! I MISSED you guys!!! I problem I see with my school here is that they don't teach them to think. If you ask a high school senior a certain question, like, for instance, what's the rotation of a hurricane south of the equator, he will probably be able to tell you IF they have covered that particular thing in school. But ask them a hypothetical question, one that requires deductive thinking, they don't know the answer. It seems to be learning by rote, and if a subject wasn't taught in the rote they don't know it. I use to think the purpose of any school was to make you think so you could go on and discover even more knowledge . I think I become disenchanted with universities when I discovered that they were not places of learning anything more than what the party platform wanted you to learn. For instance, there is a university right close to my house, the Oklahoma City University. It is expanding in size and seems to enjoy a good reputation, but it is a Methodist university. If you don't believe the Methodist party line then you are an outsider, a trouble maker. The instructors will out and out turn you into a pariah if you express ideas that flow contrary to what they believe in as Methodists. That is not the purpose of a university, in my opinion. I can't imagine a Catholic or an atheists going there. I was thrown out of a school for daring to question the rotation of a hurricane south of the equator. I was right and the teacher was wrong, but I dared to question the powers that be, and they just couldn't abide that idea.
