Some people have those powers. I don't think the writers of Roswell are fronting for the far right. They raise some real ethical issues. Another thing that happens to the kids is the military kidnaps Max because they want to exploit their powers too! The same ethical issues are the core theme of Tolkiens' series. The tremendous power of the One Ring necessarily corrupts anyone who tries to use it. It is an amount of power the human race can't handle - and elves find difficult too. But Boromir argues as one might that the Ring should be harnessed for good. Meanwhile the head of the order of wizards is bioengineering super-orcs for the dark lord's war.
