How about little known sites, that mention a surname you are researching but isn't your tree. My example is www.dohistory.org Am researching the Ballard name but mine are from Va, not Maine. But this was a fun site to browse. Am proud member of the IBSSG --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Platinum - Watch CBS' NCAA March Madness, live on your desktop!
Pamela, thankyou for your enthusiastic response to my mystery father posting. I am always appreciative of the help that I get at this list and your message really cheered me. I am enthused again so I will get my work here at home finished so that I can spend lots of time again on it. I will post all details, but I expect that it will be too time consuming for most people to help with. I know from my experience so far. I'll post it in the next day or two and maybe get some suggestions from all you listers because I'm sure there are places I haven't looked yet. I got the application form off to NARA for military details but I don't know how long it will take. They lost a lot of information in a fire I think, so that could be another problem. I also have to get back in contact with Chicago Uni and hope for help there. Dave, I checked the Toronto Star link thankyou. They don't have what I need which I'm pretty sure is the Washington Post 1925. At ancestry.com they have Washington Post 1924. Hopefully they might add more years. It is very time consuming downloading pages and looking for a photo. I got through three months of 1924 then a friend wiped my cookies and I didn't have a record of where I was up to so I lost heart for a while. I won't let anyone tamper on my computer again and I'll make notes next time. Thanks all and thanks Jeff for being a the coolcat listkeeper that you are, it has been interesting to read all the different views of recently. Lucinda :)
Spring has sprung in middle Tennessee. Flowers are blooming everywhere. And so are the trees. Bees are buzzing, and mosquitos are biting. Anybody on here know what kind of bush has bright red blossoms and a yellow center to the blossoms. It doesnt have thorns but it has stickers that would be blooming????? Cutting grass!? My daffodils, tulips & crocuses finally started popping up last weekend! This is the start of my 9th year in Illinois, and generally by this point I have had crocuses in bloom for 2-3 weeks. Sue G. > > > > Or even the weather. Am glad they put a stop to the discussions. Have seen people off the web get into fights over politics, and religion. I feel like yall are my extended family, would hate to lose anyone. Thank You, Jeff! You have my full support & understanding in this matter. Politics makes a strange bedfellow, indeed, and is certainly one of the two easiest ways to initiate flaming & hard feelings. I will cheerfully abide by the policy as decreed by RootsWeb and post no further references to this matter. I value all of you (even those who cannot agree with my views) too much to risk having myself removed. Sometimes we can have some very enlightening discussions in this forum, and I look forward to our returning to such discussions. Rootsweb's decree on the discussion of the current political situation is a very rare occurance. As listmanager I have to follow the rules as set by our FREE provider, and they indicate that a listowner who doesn't comply on this one will risk removal. I am "compelled" to ban the subject of the Gulf War on all my lists. Unlike the despot on the other side of the world, I will do as requested, and comply. I would like to thank the list for keeping the subject, as we discussed it, under control, and even though we had a few rough spots, everyone seemed to take the spirit of good conversation to heart. Lets continue to discuss OTHER matters in the same spirit. Thanks. -- Jeffery Scism, http://blacksheep.rootsweb.com/ International Blacksheep Society of Genealogists Links to my Homepages: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~scismfam/ Genealogy is the art of the living haunting the dead.... SEVERE EARTHQUAKE IN FRANCE March 4, 2003. Today it was reported that a severe earthquakes have occurred in 10 different locations in France. The severity was measured in excess of 10 on the Richter Scale. The cause was the 56,681 dead American soldiers buried in French soil rolling over in their graves. According to the American Battle Monuments Commission there are 26,255 Yankee dead from World War I buried in 4 cemeteries in France. There are 30,426 American dead from World War II buried in 6 cemeteries in France. These 56,681 brave American heroes died in their youth to liberate a country which is guilty of shameful unspeakable behavior in the 21st century. May the United States of America never forget their sacrifice as we find ways to forcefully deal with the Godforsaken unappreciative, forgetful country of France! We should also note that we pay Millions of dollars on RENT for these cemeteries plus the cost of Maintenance, let us remove them ( our military dead) and give their land back to them. ----------- I am a lurker and saw this on another list and just HAD to send it. Ok, I will go back to lurking. Cindy IBSSG
I do have a problem with the attached email, and will exercise my use of the "delete" key as soon as I have noted that there seems to be some degree of confusion on the American side of the Pond. Having lived in France, I can tell you that the majority of the French people LIKE Americans, and that what is going on (with some possible ulterior motives) is a disagreement between the Prime Minister of France and the administration in power in the U.S. The French view of the American President is largely that he is suffering from Mad Cowboy Disease, but doesn't reflect upon the quality of the American people as a whole, nor the country in which they live. Before we make the entire French nation out to be "bad guys" and boycott the few products they export to us (hurting their merchants, not their P.M.), we should, perhaps, attempt to rethink the situation. We have (collectively) in the past caused suffering by the peoples of various nations due to the despots they have ruling them. Very few nations on this Earth have the ability to control who rules their land. Most have the right to vote, but in many instances they either don't exercise that right, or their political structure is such that voting does no good, since there is but one party represented on the ballot. When you get right down to the "brass tacks", the current President of the United States was not elected by popular vote, but was rather appointed by the Supreme Court. While this action flies in the face of the Constitutional structure of the United States, most of us have little problem with that fact, and the majority of us will stand by decisions made on our behalf by the government which is representing us. If we disagree, we have the right to express that fact, and if that doesn't satisfy us, we have the right to leave this land. Many in this world are not so fortunate. > That is a most interesting true story, Lucinda; Thank you.....ET..... Thanks Elmo, and thanks to my father for his rich history. If I lived in US I would go through all the Washington Times and/or Washington Post because he said that when the trouble broke out and he had to leave, that his photo made the paper, that he had on a swan tailed suit and that it was taken on the steps of Capitol Building. That would have been either 1924 or 1925. That information comes from Mum, she said he was quite proud of the really good photo...! I really should try to materialise some cash to get over there myself and look, unfortunately I can't think how to get my hands on enough of it. Wish he was still around, he'd have some ideas I'm sure. Then again that could be dangerous! Lucind
Thanks Jeff and Pamela From your replies I figure that he was an officer. He was a Leutenant Commander WW1 flying planes for the Navy. He trained at Pensacola Navy Base, including study at MIT. He ws one of the first aviators to go to Europe and flew over the Channel protecting the troop carriers. He was shot down in the channel, he was saved by his watch that caught on part of the plane debri and kept him afloat, then picked up by a british ship. He was not injured. He flew Hispano Swuiza planes which had Lewis machine guns. They had to be able to re-assemble the Lewis blindfolded. (he was always a wiz at fixing machinery, guess this is where he learnt it) He said that if they stressed out and pushed too hard with thier feet, that thier feet would go right through the flimsy floor of the machine. He travelled and worked throughout US, Canada, Alaska and Mexico with many fantastic stories of his experiences. He worked on the Alaskan oil pipeline, raced horses in Canada, raced cars in US, flew planes for paying passengers with Eddie Rickenbacker, drilled for oil in Mexico, attended Chicago Uni under a sports scholarship playing football and got kicked out in his last year of law...all sound far fetched I know, but his exploits later in Oz confirm his adventurous nature. In 1925 he got into some type of trouble with a friend, a politician, and had to leave the US before the shit hit so he took the first ship out which happened to be going to Germany. Using his brothers passport he then came to Oz, had a dog with him and had to be rowed ashore by the captain at nite, because of quarantine laws. He thereafter used an assumed name and never returned. I think that he really missed his home and country. He eventually met my mum and bred us gang of rebels and adventurers, so we all consider ourselves in part to be American. Mum being the calm soul that she is, never fully quizzed him on what his real name was, he always said that he would take her home to Texas, she figured that she would find out then. Time ran out and this didn't happen. So with the advent of the net I am now trying to find out who he really was, I could have family over there somewhere becuase he had a brother. Anyway, I think I've rambled on enough for now, sorry about that, but at least you've all had something to read and I've had someone to 'talk' to. Now that I think I have a name on him I will get busy doing more searching. Thanks for listening. Lucind.
I have a niece on the Kitty Hawk in the Persian Gulf right now. She was home for Christmas and is a marvelous young woman. I hadn't see her for years. Jeanne
Jeff: good for posting the official Rootsweb reminder, and thank you for your careful leeway on this semi-genealogical thread. Pamela - right on! they don't want nor need leaflets, but a soft cookie, maybe oatmeal-raisin would melt resistance faster than any weapon. My girlfriend gave me some cookies she'd baked, and we've been married 35 years! As for the idea of wanting to live in the US in order to hunt through newspapers; it would be a lot cheaper to go to "paperofrecord" (dot-com, i think) If it was an international type story, the Toronto (ontario) daily star has an archive site called "pages of the past" It is difficult to get used to because their "archive" is a recent text archive and "pages of the past" is a separate archive. because there is some sloppiness in their menus, there is some getting-used-to and it is 5 $ cdn for 5 hours of high-speed searching. Should anyone be so inclined, contact me offlist and i'll toss out a few pointers on coping with it. http://www.starclassifieds.com/NASApp/OLCSApp/index.jsp
I don't think he & his sons will leave. I firmly believe we will be eyeball-deep in war tomorrow. Because if we don't follow through on our ultimatums, we are setting ourselves up for September 11 every day of the week, every day of the year. I agree completely. No matter what you might think of the impending war, the people who have agreed to serve our country through peace and war deserve support AND GRATITUDE.
