Am thankful that Ontario is a long way inland, but here we are told to expect a large bucketload of rain on the weekend, and to put our lawn chairs and anything else that can fly, in the house.

Looks like Isabel is going to make one heckuva run then! Stay dry!!! Best, SueB
LOL....all of you are great. Yes, I do hate it when I push send and then the light bulb goes on. LOL.....well we all need these things if for no other reason than to help us stay humble and keep a good perspective. Lisa
Although I'm definitely out of the way of Isabel by now, I DID move myself right into hurricane territory by living a block from a bay on the Caribbean. However, I DO have a hurricane-proof (cement exterior walls & roof, wooden louvers on the windows instead of glass panes) apartment, so in my case it's "Don't weep for me, Argentina...uh...Belize". Glad to be back in the "swim" of things, even though I let my Ancestry.com lapse when I moved out of the US. Sorry, I misunderstood the email about protecting yourself......as you know from my previous response I thought it was internet virus protection.....I didn't look at the subject heading. Duhhh.... :-) Lisa
Hi... I am assuming protecting yourself is referring to virus protection. If so, I am using McAffrey Virus Software, that is set to scan email and the entire system once per day. Is there something going on that I should be aware of or check for? Sincerely, Lisa
Hi Y'all! Just taking a headcount here of who we have on this list that is in the path of the storm. Please let us know where you are and what you're doing to protect yourselves, ok?? ABOVE ALL.... PLEASE protect yourselves!!! Best, SueB http://www.cdbaby.com/suegilmore
Hey Mike! I am diggin this whole Melungeon thing LOL! I am kin to some folks who sure fit the bill, that and the fact I have some pics that clearly show my line could be black or indian...........the relatives on this line assure me this is not so LOL! I am third generation irish american but am connected to a pioneer family on a different side.............. I have the pics of them. Now, my black friend says my great uncle is black........and my indian friends saw the other pics and say the rest are indian.............I had forwarded pics to objective viewers and they said the same..........and tennessee , the carolinas and virginias all factor in a big way............that and one of my ancestors had a pesky habit of having two families at the same time.....each a different race LOL! Then there are the Comers........hubbies line. One of them looks black or a mix of black and indian, the rest indian. I have pics of them.............how in the world they passed for white still blows my mind.................my kids think they got gypped in the pigmentation department LOL! The Comers were all along the trail of tears, one of them married into the Jolly family.........I noted that on the 1850 census.........by her name the race box is marked.............but WHICH race is not specified and this is the only place on that census that has a check mark.....on the whole darn thing...........coincidence????? I think not................. That whole black dutch and black irish thing flies out the window when you see the pics............ I also know that the Carter name is in the Melungeon line........that is the line I connect to in old america............. I have seen the Comer name in the Melungeon mix too. But I have also seen some really indignant responses to the Melungeon theory...........but i sure love their motto........'One people, many colors.....'. It doesn't matter to me, whoever came before me is the reason i am here now..............and that is great to me. The Carters pretty much know there is indian but when and where is lost........the Comers hid it, at least hubbies line. I am proud of those pics of them......whoever and whatever they are. Of course being irish (and had to go to catholic school and learn to step dance LOL!) I am very interested in various cultures. I was raised with 'omens' and 'signs' and the lot that had been passed down and of course the stories that ensue. That predisposed me to be curious about others. I find it all facinating.............my kids were raised to know both peoples they come from, irish and indian and the ancient histories and cultures of both........they listen to irish and native american music, participated in sweat lodges from the time they were four and damn if they cant dance!!!!!!! One is a jazz freak......i endulge myself in the fantasy that there is genetic memory and what we are comes out in our interests.........and if that is true..........well, Melungeon it is!!!!! Oy Vey!!!!!!! LOL! Do you have any ties to the SC and Tn. Comers? I had noted that on the 1880 LDS site there are some U-Comers who are native american and their indian names are given.......but I have not seen that name in a census since that time frame.........I am sure they shortened it. I think they are in NC or Sc.....I have forgotten. Been tied up in the famine irish LOL! If you think our Comers are hard to pin down........try generations of hungry irish!!!!!!! evie
Hi, Evie! Since I have a lot of that family in my genealogy (paternal side), I would also suggest that you look under the spelling "Coomer". Considering that it's one of the recognised Melungeon family names, you might find relatives with virtually any surname or given name...many of which seem to defy pronunciation! Good luck! G.C.........(J.C.)......Loucile.....(Voncile).......Fonnie.......(Tommye) and the most enigmatic..........TOUCLESH............(who knows!?).....there was a kid missing and because of that spelling and lack of records.......we have NO CLUE who she is LOL! There was a neighboring family of the same last name and I cannot begin to pronounce their kids first names!!!!! The spelling looks VERY similar to Jeff's take on this LOL! Consonants and vowels...............they are missing in the latter family! Well, at least in an order one could sound anything out without sounding russian. And since I am 'venting' and spoofing the subject, how in the world can a name of five simple letters get totally turned around for several census............ It is comer and I have found them under Camer, Coomber, Corner, Cormer and am now checking Conen.............. But if I had a name of 'Chickenstiffle' or 'ilostmywitz'.......it would have been simpler. I think those of us who do this have learned to read the style Jeff typed rather quickly and make sense of it LOL! Hey, i bet we can read thru a mirror too!!!! Jeff, I think i am going to print off your email and frame the thing........would make a neat sign!
