Jan, The recent New York quake occurred in the northernmost part of the state. It was felt all over the state, except by me, who slept through it. Just across town from my house, a friend was jolted awake with the house shaking and rattling for 20 seconds. If I noticed anything, I probably thought it was a cat jumping on the bed. Now, just don't get me started ! I have seen people killed up close, as in standing right next to them when it happened and having blood spurted all over me and running to hide in the latrine so the guards wouldn't think it was me who had did it. I have started a book about all the killings I witnessed in prison, called "My Brother's Keeper ?". Actually, it was all the senseless killings I saw while there that changed a lot of my thinking about how I viewed mankind. Indeed, it addled my senses so much I started being crazy and goofy and went around my prison trying to keep people alive, even the ones I didn't like personally, got nosey, stuck my nose in other people's business, would snatch some young stupid kid by the hand and drag him to safety, got the hell beat out of me several times, had contracts put on my life, the whole nine yards. And then some group in Oklahoma City heard of my actions and gave me an award for them. While I was in prison. And speaking of awards, David, the young boy I took under my wing and tried to salvage after his parents abandoned him, well, this Friday he receives an award from the National Association of Volunteers, live TV coverage on their surprise presentation which will take place at his high school, limousines, plaque, baloon boquet, and a $1000 gift to the charity he is volunteering at. The presentation will be shown on channel 9 here in Oklahoma City at 5:00 PM Friday the 26th. They are making a big deal about it because most volunteers are older folks who are retired, and they seldom have an opportunity to give one of their awards to a teenager still in high school. Coincidentally, one of the women who sits on the Volunteer award committee also sat on the committee that gave me the award 25 years ago. Small world.
