    3. We had the award ceremony today for David. He was given the Youth Volunteer of The Year Award today. The committee met at his high school, along with TV and newspaper coverage. After we were all gathered they sent for him from one of his classes and he walked into the high school office to face a huge crowd of people and bright lights. He got a plaque, a balloon bouquet and a bouquet of flowers, a Volunteer Of America T-Shirt and the Food Pantry, where he volunteers, got a thousand dollar check. Then we all trooped over to the Food Pantry, which just sits across the street from David's school, and they shot more film of David doing some of his work. The TV coverage will be on OKC News Channel 9 at 5:00 pm tonight, and the newspaper article will be in the Daily Oklahoman tomorrow morning. If you watch closely you will see me hovering around here and there, I am wearing black slacks with a black and grey stripped long sleeved dress shirt, beautiful bald head !!! 3. Gary, Jan's idea is better than mine (she's often closer to the mark than I), however, I do remember that some of the wagon trains were sponsored & led by the Wells Fargo Co. That organization still exists, it's now strictly a bank, but they might still have some records from the "old days". Certainly wouldn't be a big investment to find out! 3. We live near some tourmaline mines, which also have kunzite, aquamarine and garnets, and there's some creek beds in N. CA with benitoite. It's getting a lot tougher to find places to rock hound. The feds are making more and more places off-limits. It's rattlesnake country around here, too, 5 or 6 kinds. lol We tend to do this stuff in the winter, when the snakes are sleeping and it's cooler to be out in the sun for a few hours. The contestants will start in Dallas, travel to Waco, Austin, San Antonio, over to Houston, and down to Brownsville. 3. Mike's idea is good, but some opals just crack, some crumble over time. The fiery nature of opal is caused by water (not drops, just very small bits of H2O), inside the rock, and the 'rock' part is silica. The presence of water prevents the silica from actually forming crystals, which would make the rock tougher. If the water content is too small (6-8% is good, less is not)the opal probably won't last long term. As the water goes away, shrinkage cracks appear, and can eventually cause it to fall apart. It's a pretty delicate stone and I wouldn't wear it while cleaning house or even washing dishes. Opals can be stabilized, but I'm not familiar with the process. May be just a coat of epoxy is used. Your best bet is to talk to a jeweler about it. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Shuler Michael" <grinch42@mindspring.com> Reply-To: grinch42@mindspring.com To: BLACKSHEEP-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BSChat] Jewelry Date: Fri, 26 Apr 2002 9:7:20 -0500 Robin, for any jewelry containing opals, one should take a cotton swab moistened with cooking oil or baby oil about every six months & swab the surface. This will prevent the opals from cracking almost indefinitely (except if it's a ring that you keep on while washing your hands and have an obsessive-compulsive disorder). Tty it...it works. 3. Sharon, any jewelry can be recycled a few times, if you're so inclined. The stones can be removed from the rings (if the rings are gold or silver they can, of course, be melted down & re-cast into a different piece [broach, necklace, etc]). Likewise, the gemstones can be put in settings of any of these, and you can wind up with some truly beautiful and interesting new pieces to wear for a while. 3. Robin, for any jewelry containing opals, one should take a cotton swab moistened with cooking oil or baby oil about every six months & swab the surface. This will prevent the opals from cracking almost indefinitely (except if it's a ring that you keep on while washing your hands and have an obsessive-compulsive disorder). Tty it...it works. I have some beautiful jewels too, but it is funny they don't mean what they used too, I rarely wear my jewelry now either. When I was in my twenties and thirties had to wear everything. But my most fav is pearls. I think they are so lovely and have a lot of them, no rings, just stands and bracelets. My daughter could give a hoot now. Maybe later she will enjoy my jewelry. Just lost of someone took my diamond earrings. I was careless and took them out and left them out sitting. Haven't had that happen in over twenty years. 3. This sounds like a real plan to me..... Doris....A Texan in Georgia..... Still shaking the family tree and dodging the nuts after 30+ years! IBSSG Subject: Survivor, Texas Style Due to the popularity of the Survivor shows, Texas is planning to do its own, entitled Survivor, Texas Style. The contestants will start in Dallas, travel to Waco, Austin, San Antonio, over to Houston, and down to Brownsville. They will then proceed up to Del Rio, on to El Paso, then to Midland, Odessa, Lubbock, and Amarillo. From there, they'll proceed to Abilene, Ft. Worth and finally back to Dallas. Each will be driving a pink Volvo with a bumper sticker that reads, "I'm gay, I'm a vegetarian, I voted for Al Gore, and I'm here to confiscate your guns!" The first one to make it back to Dallas alive wins!

    1. [BSChat] Notice to lists
    2. The subject has come up, so I will clarify. Sue Bates our Tender Lamb's Coordinator, is Co-admin on both lists. She is fully qualified and authorized to take any actions needed in assuring this list runs properly, and does a fine job. She is stable and FAIR. If I am off list, she has the passwords, and the authority to do what is needed. (I have been DOWN again with kidney stones, but once again I am back up and feeling better. There may be periods where my discomfort will leave Sue in full authority) (also my on-line time is limited by other activities- so she may see and react before I do, if I see she has, I will stand back and not double her efforts.) So please, when she redirects something to chat- she is doing her job, and I appreciate the fine job she is doing. Jeff Jeffery G.
