Gosh, Mike, that's fairly depressing news! :-( For what it's worth, I have a biological uncle (the youngest of my birthfather's siblings) who was in line for a heart transplant back about the time that I located the family in 1984. They subsequently found the right combination of medications for him while he was waiting for his donor heart and he's still doing well. Of course, he's following Dr's. orders and behaving himself. I'm very flattered that you consider our select little group as family and felt like you could share that very special news with us. I think alot of our members come to feel that way about us. We are all pretty special folks, after all! :-) Sending healing thoughts your way, bud, and looking forward to more inflicted misery from your direction! *big grin* Best, SueB
Jack I don't know how involved you want to get with the diamonds, how much you want to learn, but here some leads. The easiest thing to do is to take them to a jeweler to get an idea of how good their quality is and how likely that they can be faceted. Keep in mind that it's common that 1/3 to 1/2 of the rough stone will be lost in the faceting process. Not all stones are suitable, depending on their internal structure. As for the cost of faceting, I don't know what it costs. There are some people on line who do faceting and it's a hobby for a lot of people. The machines they use in this country have become very sophisticated. I do know that all the wholesalers I know have the faceting done in Sri Lanka and other places in the Orient. The labor cost is lower, and also is far less automated--usually teenaged girls, and their eyesight is pretty well shot by the time they're 20, from all the 'close' work. As for knowing quartz from diamonds, there's a lot of difference. Glass is softer, diamonds weigh more, the crystal form is very different, but the rough crystals may not look like the drawings of perfect crystals. Here's a site where you can learn more: http://www.webmineral.com There's an alphbetical listing. Also: www.mindat.org Same thing. Under "quartz" you'll see a photo of some Arkansas quartz, usually some spectaluar stuff, both clear and smokey, from the Mt. Ida area. Jack, Take a hike around the net and look at uncut diamonds. the difference between those and bits of quarts or feldspar or other junk is pretty obvious. If you have one, you need someone to cut it. Cost you the farm, probably, to have it faceted. Good luck! Jan C. It's like any other kind of mining or panning for gold, whatever. It's true that the only a small percentage of those who hunt will find the big prize. So, if you don't enjoy the hunt, you're bound to be disappointed. <g> It's similar to genealogy--you don't always find what you're looking for, but if you enjoy the detective work, it still pays off, simply being in pursuit of the goal. And you go on in the hope that a great nugget of data will fall in your lap. <g> As for Arkansas, the diamonds are found in a 'kimberlite pipe', the throat of an old volcano. This is the same situation as the diamond field in South Africa. So, you never know what you're going to find. Even in South Africa, most of the diamonds they find are quite small. Hi, Mike! Well, I for one am looking forward to more misery which you will inflict. I definitely have not suffered enough yet to make up for past sins, so keep that stuff coming! Always something going on in life... A young kid tonight, laid rubber with his truck, and slammed into the fire hydrant near my house. I went running out...he & his three friends were ok, but he looked at me and said: *MY DAD IS GOING TO KILL ME!!* And he threw himself face-down on the grass. <g> I called the cops. One of his friends cell-phoned his Dad. Sure enough...his father came roaring in about 10 minutes later, in his own truck. He was a big, burly Mexican guy with longish hair...the kid's mother was with him (white woman). The father was NOT ONE to mess with...looked like he works construction. He was courteous, and apologetic about what happened. He leaned his elbow on top of the cop's car, patiently waiting for the officer to write the citation for reckless driving and not controlling a vehicle. But he was *staring* at his kid....over the top of the car. Not ONE of the (4) young guys moved an inch the entire time...about two hours. No drugs or alcohol involved, but I'll bet the kid caught hell when he got home! The father was not a happy camper....neither was the mother. Jan C. IBSSG

Well, sheepers, I decided to share this with all. I had to go to the doctor on Thursday, and after his "tentative" diagnosis, I had to have time to recover before sharing...it is his opinion that I am suffering from congestive heart failure due to a substantial number of factors. Since that is still a "death sentence", I told him that I wanted all possible tests to be done, and would insist on at least two other opinions. He was pleased to see that I was thinking "out of the box", and agreed to refer me to a coronary specialist for an echo cardiogram. Now, at this point in time I will certainly not "throw in the towel", nor even be condescending to a "death sentence". While I had never expected to live to be 60, I still figure I have a great deal more misery to inflict on humanity before I agree to accept my eternity in Hell! But of all those with whom I currently correspond on-line, those in the BS site feel more like the family I have never truly been able to relate with. After all, all of us have at least that much in common...being black sheep! Yes indeed we did, and not only that, but I went into details about how the BlackSheep Society had adopted us as their official charity, we had quite a conversation about IBSSG. Of course, you never know what they will have on the air once they get done editing things. On the appearance today they cut out half of what they taped and shot. Jack Childers in OKC
Michael, We all have a death sentence. Some dates are just closer than others. My father's stepmother lived 15 years after she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She died while I was pregnant with my daughter...Kristine is named after her middle name. If your time is short I hope you cram all you want to do in that time. Don't leave regrets. If no one else wants it, I'll take your research...just kidding. EdrieAnne IBSSG

Gets us out in the wild places, in to nature and away from the city.....< Jan, you definately need to plan a vacation in Arkansas then. There are more minerals found in that state then probably any other in this country, I think. Lots of roadside stands devoted to the sales of them as well. When we visited my cousin southwest of Little Rock a couple of years back I found quartz crystals formations right there in their driveway. Really neat! Best, SueB
David got his award today for volunteering at the Friends Food Pantry and the news media was so impressed with the pantry's efforts that they called and wanted to do a plug for the pantry tonight. So we all trooped down to the pantry and News 9 here in Oklahoma City did a feature on us. It will air on the ten o'clock news tonight. You can see Kade with Cookie Arbuckle giving the interview and me, David and a few other volunteers working in the pantry. Maybe this plea for funds, food and volunteers will help us out. The most fun game played at my daughters birthday parties was one where they tossed balloons, filled part with water and part with air, to each other, taking a step back between each toss. They really had fun and parents were told in advance the children would be getting wet.
