    1. [BSChat] Re: [BS-L] Spade Cooley/band member Smokey Rogers
    2. J. Garland
    3. Trying to switch this to chat... Does anyone know what became of Smokey Rogers? He played with Cooley and Tex Williams and was one of the Sons of the Pioneers way back. All this was before I was born. Really! But...during the '50's, Smokey Rogers owned a place called the Bostonia Ballroom in El Cajon CA. I grew up about 6 blocks from that place. And Smokey lived in a little one-story art-and-crafts era bungalow on Bostonia St., then just a little dirt road, about 2 or 3 blocks from the ballroom. I used to walk by both the ballroom and his house on my way home from school. He had a TV show televised from the ballroom every weekday afternoon. For THREE HOURS!!! FIVE DAYS A WEEK!! In case any of you wonder how I OD'd on C/W at a young age... lol Anyway, my mom got me on his show for my third birthday, with a few other kids. A very clear memory for me. By sometime about 1960 or so, the TV show was gone and it seems like sometime after that Smokey moved to Apple Valley and had a ballroom type place up there. Don't know if he's alive or not. But, I sure do have memories of his show on tv, in black and white, on our little 12" screen with the convex sides, inside the "blonde" wood cabinet. The crime took place at Spade's plush desert ranch near the community of Mojave, during a "wild, drunken attempt to reconcile their wrecked marriage." 3. Can't speak for the Denver area (was only in the state once & that was over 50 years ago), but most prisions have a burial area near the prison for bodies rejected by the prisioner's family. I would contact the state Bureau of Corrections to get the info. They should have records of what became of the bodies. Mike IBSSG > [Original Message] > From: Gwen Griggs <mstblu3@fone.net> > To: <BlackSheep-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 5/1/2002 9:52:33 AM > Subject: [BS-L] Burials > > Ok since I am new to the list I will get right to it. I am looking for information on my Blacksheep, I wish to know if anybody can tell me how I would go about finding a burial place for someone that spent his life in Prison? When they die does the family get the body? What if that family rejects it ,where does it go ,does the State bury them ? 1. [BSChat] NUTSO NEIGHBORS
    2. bobert
    3. Hi, Sheepers! Enjoy that "Redneck Neighbor" website. We had a 'know-it-all neighbor once: if he didn't know about it or the answer to it, it had never happened. He was one of those 'no fertilizer' farmers out in their backyard. He planted runner beans - used old bedsprings for poles and the 'running'. Those bedsprings stayed up no matter what the month or the season. We planted bushes to spare us the sight - they finally grew tall enough to halfway cover that bedspring eyesore. So - what does the neighbor do: while we are away, he plants wild honeysuckle on his side of the fence - actually, our fence. I am still fighting the shoots from that D*@# honeysuckle! These neighbors also had rabbits in their backyard - had a warren and did keep them in that. They had a small lap dog (wife's dog),then added a a brown Doberman - Duke (husband's dog) - to their animal population...Duke was 'in love' with that poor lapdog! Never mind the leash law in our town: they waited till 'dark' and let Duke loose. One afternoon I was out in our side yard - had a long-handel shovel - so must have been planting something or digging something else up. Duke was outside with the teenage son, but Duke looked like he would like to take a bite out of my leg, or other fleshy part of my body. I thought, 'ole boy, just make a move and you are gonna get it with this shovel I got in my hands!' Forgot to mention the corn crop. Oh, yes, any farmer can tell you that growing corn is a surefire way of attracting rats - right! The neighbor would sit on their backporch and shot at the rats with a B-B pistol. Well - one year when the corn was just about ready to pick, either rats or squirrels got to it: ate all the kernals off and left the cobs on the stalks! Ha-ha-ha-ha! What a weird sight! Well - the upshot of this domestic bliss that used to be next door to us is that the husband nearly died from a massive heart attack. He recovers and, as I have been told, that like many men especially, decided to begin a new life to sort of make up for what he missed the first time around. However, he had, just previous to the bad heart attack, signed a 2d mortage on the house so his wife could get a new car: needed one to get to her job. Divorce degree: he gets his own car, he continues to pay for 2d mortage on house (taken out to get the car the ex-wife gets). She gets the house with its regular mortage payment each month -- which she eventually sells since she can't afford the house payments, expecially after spending a year in the slammer and having to make restitution on the stolen church funds. And - she gets 1/2 the ex husband's military retirement pay! Oh, Ouch! Post Divorce Degree: 1 - old bedsprings and tepee poles get torn down and put out for trash collection. 2 - Non-fertilizer garden gets all torn up...looked like somebody tok a pickax to it with big-time rage venting. 3 - Rabbits, pens and all, put out to street with sign, "Free - take 'em all" Have you ever been away from home on a trip or vacation and come home to find things happened, big time, while you were away? We went on a week's trip - came home - husband had left the wife...divorce in the works. A few months later, we go away for a few days - wife is arrested and is the slammer for grand theft! The job she needed the new car for: church office; grand theft of $10,000 from church offerings/fund raising projects. There is more but know your eyes are more than tired from reading all of this. Have a great tomorrow! Shirley: bobert@i-1.net

    2. You can darn well bet that the gas company wouldn't be paying back that money if they didn't have to and you can be sure that it won't break them. I wonder how much they got away with that hasn't been discovered. When I lived in Oklahoma I always wondered why the gas rates were so high in a state that had so many gas & oil wells. Gail

    3. Sheesh, Jack...chickens riddled with cancer spots...! As you know I lived in Thailand... had rats running around outside carrying the Plague, we couldn't even brush our teeth with the filthy water, and Amoebae dysentery was everywhere & in everything. Son Kyle was just learning to walk, and he had dysentery so bad I thought I was going to lose him...his fever shot-up to 106. And he was just eating bottled baby foods, and drinking canned milk from the Army PX (shipped in from the States). Germs were everywhere... Not to bore you with the all of the health regimes I followed living there - I think I became super sensitive to diseases, water, food & preparation, and over-all cleanliness, especially in the kitchen, and floors, living there. To this day, no-one walks into my house with their dirty shoes on, including me. I kick them off at the front door. And my kids are the same way in their homes. Everyone who knows me, shucks their shoes at my front door. Anyway, to my knowledge I've never seen a chicken with cancer spots...and I can imagine your disgust at some jerk in prison spitting in the food....acting like the low-caliber person they were, that landed them there in the 1st place. I cannot even imagine being housed-up (for over 20 years), with ranting, bitter, convicts. And, I'm amazed that you made it through, in one piece, to look forward to a better life...that you loved your Mom (in spite of everything), and your family histories.
