Just heard on the news here in San Diego: studies show that you're more likely to die from a medical mix up than from breast cancer, a car wreck or AIDS. There's something wrong with this system. Probably a lot of things wrong. I know of one--but this is not necessarily a large part of the problem. There's lots of ways mix ups can take place. My husband tells me that, while his first wife was still alive 8-10 years ago, the nurses in N. CA were noticing that there were some relatively unqualified nurses coming along and they looked into it, trying to find out why these new nurses weren't up to snuff. Found out that the tests for becoming a nurse had been made easier by the CA state licensing board, so that nurses coming in from foreign countries would be able to pass them. At that time, most other states had a reciprocal agreement with CA, if a nurse was licensed here, the license was good in other states. I don't know if that still exists--hopefully they tightened up their requirements, but they may not be aware that CA did made licensing easier. I can understand the state wanting a constant supply of new nurses. It's hard to keep nurses for more than 5 years, since nurses' wages top out in that short a time. And then they start looking for something else. Who can blame them? Good nurses are not paid enough, that's for sure. But, there's got to be a way to sort out those who just aren't what they should be, regardless of the reason. Jack, this explains much. I have felt for a long time that your involvement with Kade's mother was something quite weak. That somehow there had never been a serious relationship there. For your sake and Kade's, I'm happy this is the case. In usual circumstances I'm of the opinion that children need two parents. However there are some cases where two are to many. There are also cases that the two are not always the natural parents. Kade is one very fortunate young lady. Aleta, IBSSG, Charter Member Bo-Peep Award Ogden, Utah, USA "God sent his Singers upon the Earth, With songs of Gladness and Mirth. That they might touch the hearts of men, And bring them to Heaven again." --Longfellow
I also am of the opinion that a child needs two parents, and that is what I was striving for. The fact that one of the parents was dysfunctional makes little difference because there are many families in this world where one is nuts and the other is not. I just wanted a female in Kade's life. Unfortunately, her mother was not capable of fulfilling that function. Kade had two fathers, and not in the sense that most people see that. Mike and I were not in a sexual relationship, but it was Mike's idea to begin with to have a child and he loved Kade more than if she had of been his own. Mike had a drinking problem and he flat out quit cold turkey because he said he never wanted Kade to be ashamed of him from seeing him drunk. Remember, there was another child come along, a little boy, who was desperately sick and did die at age 4 months. It took all my energy to care for him, so Mike more than took up the slack with Kade. For the first 5 years of her life Mike was the major influence in Kade's life, more than me. If Kade has any problems, and I do not see any in evidence yet, it will be due to all the loss she went through the first 6 years of her life. Mike died, her favorite "uncle", who was actually her godfather, died, her grandmother died, her baby brother died and two other friends of the family died. Gracious, at one time! , when I first wanted to have a child, I had a large extended family, then POW, it all fell apart in a five year period of time until its just me and Kade left. Thank goodness for Kade, because all these people dropping dead around me really sent me for a tailspin and if it hadn't of been for Kade I don't know if I would still be alive. I think one of the things that makes me and Kade so close is that we clung to each other when the world was falling apart around us. Well, anyway, enough of this. Life goes on despite the best laid plans of mice and men. Jack Childers in OKC
You know, I also want for Kathleen to find peace and happiness. That's why I let her move into her own house and live alone, or with anyone she wanted to, no rules, just do what she wanted. While she was in my house she had to follow rules, primarily for Kade's sake, but she couldn't follow those rules so I let her go. I could have held her in my house. I am her legal, court appointed guardian. When it comes down to it she can't wipe without my permission. But I let her go her own way. I continued to pay her bills and see that she had food and clothing and medical, but she was free to pursue her happiness however she wanted. Jack Childers in OKC
Jack - There's an old saying: "If you love them, set them free." No matter what happens, Kathleen has to find her own way, whatever that leads to. I had to let go when my kids first left home. I think you need to stop being Kathleen's guardian. Let her fly. You've had quite a life, Jack. . . and it seems you're doing everything you can in the right way, and Kade is well cared for. You can't do any more than that... Thanks for sharing your background. It's very interesting. I do hope, however, that Kathleen finds some stability & happiness...sounds like her life has been anything but pleasant... Dear Listers- Just dealt with this Klez virus. It kept crashing Mcafee before the virus could be 'cleaned'. This in turn made the virus multiply (originally 9 viruses were found, after the crashing 20 were found!). Horrid! This was my first virus, and what a pain. Anyway- maybe this is why some lists are slower than others this weekend. Cathie Jett ( I think it was). There was a great article in the Valley edition of the Daily News about the Rosie reunion. Sheepers, I spent the afternoon downloading and installing the new Norton 2002; I've been using Norton 2001. The new version has a really great feature - it scans outgoing as well as incoming mail, which means nothing can go out of my 'puter that's infected. I love that! Sharon IBSSG
JoAnn, Clearly that is what has been happening. Right now, I am pruning my address book to save others if I ever get infected. Probably won't happen - I keep Norton updated, but who knows for sure? JanG, hopefully I will keep the "new" car (which will be second hand) for around 3 years, then iwill be looking for something a lot newer, as finances will permit then (the says hopefully) Gas, Petrol here, is darned expensive compared to the prices that you pay, it runs at around £4.00 per Gallon, there is a difference between English and US gallons, I would have to look that up, but an English Gallon of Petrol is around $6 50cents? maybe more! and the car I am planning of having won't do a terrific mileage to the gallon, but I am used to that, and have to transport 3 teenagers plus boy/girl friends, Cadets, Muppet hounds, and it has to be a big enough car to tow a trailer with all the camping gear, and I like comfort in a car, and lots of pretties to tinker with!
