    3. Jack, I don't think a unilateral ban on the girl and her family are necessarily the right thing to do. I'd have a talk with Kade about the entire situation, including the signs that her nasty friend has serious mental problems and what trouble that can mean for Kade. Then if Kade decides to keep this girl out of her life, it's her idea. If she decides to keep the girl in her circle of friends then Kade will be forewarned and more careful. If you just say that Kade 'can't' have that girl in her life, that friendship will be all that more important. But you have to have the morality chat with her. EdrieAnne IBSSG

    3. People react differently to the same situation. For some, who may not have been happy for what ever reason with the church, this is the only excuse they'll need to cut their ties. I think that's what it was with my son in law. The last straw. Others will realize that there's some really great men out there in the priesthood and over look the bad for the good. The most important thing will be the way the church handles this. They have to put the health and welfare of their flock first. 3. I don't know, sounds like for some that will happen. I have a Catholic son in law who left his church because of a priest who was dallying with the boys where he was living. My SIL is from Canada. It's not just an American problem. I'm sure this could be the final straw for some in cutting their ties to the RC church. And loss of membership alone will lead to diminished income. I don't think they worry too much about that yet--the RC is all over the world and this is so far a PR problem mostly in the US, although Europe is aware of what's going on here. This kind of situation could make it more difficult to recruit new priests, sort of a guilt by association fear preventing some from getting involved. For that reason alone, I think they'll have to allow married priests. I have a friend who had planned to become a priest, even started attending a seminary, but left because he just couldn't handle what he saw going on between the "boys" in the seminary. This was 30 years ago. 3. Doris, I'm not RC, never have been, but 90% of my friends have always been RC. I consider the church to be a stabilizing factor in our society and I hope that they get this problem straightened out as quickly as possible. It's a forest fire raging right now, and ignoring it, or not handling it right is far more dangerous to the church in this country than co-operating with the police and the families and getting rid of the priests that they've had complaints about. Jan G. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Doris" <ginlu@charter.net> Reply-To: BLACKSHEEP-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com To: BLACKSHEEP-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BSChat] Re: Israel, et al Date: Wed, 8 May 2002 08:42:52 -0400 Jan G. You probably are the first person I've seen to mention that allowing priests to marry will not solve the problem...I AGREE!!! This problem has nothing to do with marrying....after all, look at all the married men who are pedophiles---it's really the dumbest argument I've heard!! And women priests will not alleviate it either, as there is abuse in both genders... It's true that has been going on for many years--centuries ago there were the poor children sold to the church because they were able to sing soprano---they were horribly abused, and it didn't stop until it saw the light of day. I'm Catholic, and I've worked with children who were abused by adults (all kinds of abuse)....as far as I know, it was never perpetrated by a priest.... the whole rotten thing is an authority figure who abuses the relationship...and I guess I will have to say that I'm glad it has finally come to light---perhaps it will put an end to a cancer within the Church and in the long run heal a lot of hurts. If it does no more than force those in authority (bishops) to stop covering for and re-locating the priests in question to another "fresh market" it will be a good thing.....but I'm hoping this will cure a lot of ills. It will have nothing to do with my affiliation with the Church, but I suppose it could go both ways---maybe we should put a little responsibility on some of the parents who wouldn't pay attention to a child who was living in fear of another person. I know of a family who experienced this---the child was abused by a clergyman and the mother refused to believe him. The father did believe--the family broke apart--the son (now grown with his own family) doesn't speak to his mother, and barely to his father--both parents are all alone---and all the family members have taken sides...big problems there!!! I'm glad I wasn't involved in counseling that group! Anyway, neither married priests nor women priests is the answer to this problem....nor is the vast liberalization proposed by some groups the answer....as far as I can see it, it's a situation that can only be resolved by changing the procedures of correction and elimination of the offenders. Off the soapbox for me.... Doris....A Texan in Georgia..... Still shaking the family tree and dodging the nuts after 30+ years! IBSSG ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. I'm hoping that the Israel/Palestine thing will be settled by them alone. I don't want us involved there, if it can be avoided. I don't see any other countries coming to give military assistance to Arafat, so, maybe if we just stand back and watch, the two old "freedom fighters" --or their successors-- will find a way to put the past where it belongs and move on. The priest problem--I have no doubt it's been going on forever. And allowing them to marry won't solve the problem. Those perverts are like any other, except they're wearing a collar and have more opportunities and a better cover than most. I don't think the problem would ever have been drug out into the light of day in any other country than ours, where we're more supportive of the victims. I don't know if the church will do a good job of weeding out the bad ones. Used to be they didn't defrock anyone because it would be construed as guilt and perhaps make the church responsible. Perhaps after a few lawsuits, they'll realize that they have to do things differently. I had high hopes that the human mind had risen to a higher level in 2002, but it doesn't look promising. Looks like the Middle Eastern countries are still mired-in with their old religious beliefs. In a nut-shell, I'm disappointed in the *MALE* leaders of various countries. They can never seem to get it together. 3. Yes, the Moxley case will be interesting. Skakel isn't quite a Kennedy and he's not a very sympathic figure. The case is looking pretty bad for him. I'm digusted by the molestations. The accusations are just the truth coming out, ugly as it is, and it's a part of the "clean up". It would go on indefinitely without the public becoming aware of the situation. No doubt there'll be some small percentage of false accusations, and I hope those are laid to rest quickly, but for the most part, I'm hoping the accusations, criminal and civil proceedings will lead to some changes that will protect the kids. I'm sure the church is concerned--they have trouble keeping priests as it it, I think. And who knows how large a percentage of them this could eventually affect. But, the only right thing to do, for the church to keep their credibility, it do get rid of the men who are committing these crimes and turn them over to the police. My newspaper sometimes sits unopened on the table for three days. However, the Martha Moxley murder case (Michael Skakel) could prove interesting. Are you sick of the priest molestations or the accusations? 3. I think their greatest concern is that we'll become educated about nutrition and our bodies. They've been building their "we're almost God" reputation ever since the AMA was formed. It's been built largely on our ignorance. I'm sure they want to keep it that way. What a difference! You would think my insurance company would have sent me lots of info on Nutrition and Exercise. They are the ones who benefit if I am healthy. I wonder why they don't pay for nutritionists. ----- Original Message ----- From: "J.
