    3. Doris, The theories about which European groups have contributed to the Melungeon gene pool are probably all correct to one extent or another. The Spaniards were there first in the 1500's and we know that they left behind some men who were Spanish, Portuguese and North African/Moorish sailors. Then the English, in the 1600's. If any of those people survived, it was because they were accepted by and moved in with the NA tribes. It's also entirely possible that the Europeans brought diseases with them that killed off a portion of the native population, which meant that in the long run, over 400 years, the European traits would have been more predominant than the NA traits. The first of the Europeans may have been treated, initially, as prisoners, but I've wondered about a different aspect. I recall hearing that when the Lewis and Clark expedition headed West, the NA tribes that they met with were fascinated by the Black man who was traveling with the expedition. The NA's called him the "tattooed man". And they thought his hair was really cool, too. The Chiefs offered their wives to him. And it would have been rude to refuse... I have wondered if a similar situation may have occurred with the tribes on the east coast of the Carolinas. If the Spaniards behaved fairly decently and recognized that they were outnumbered, I can imagine them being adopted by the NA. The presence of some that looked 'tattooed', may have helped. The same with any that may have arrived with the English. (I'm obviously making assumptions about the tribes' attitude toward "tattooed" men, but since it was a recurring event from tribe to tribe across plains, perhaps it's a fair guess.) I haven't read the latest on the DNA study linking some of the Melungeons to Spanish Jews, who probably arrived as members of the Spanish crews. I've wondered if, in Spain, there's any passenger or crew lists still in existence for the ships that were sent to the Carolina area in the 1500's. I've seen a couple of websites, and they have different theories! [But they were well done.....if that counts?] The general descriptions seem to include Portugese/Indian{N/A)/Black/Irish ?/and a few others... Seems to be no real description that's "official"....but the identifying features are listed. I think the likelihood of a Mediterranean connection is pretty much accepted, also. Concerning the Med. connection, this is usually used to trace certain conditions and diseases. Doris....A Texan in Georgia..... Still shaking the family tree and dodging the nuts after 30+ years! There was some story I read (a long time ago), that a group of people landed (or crashed) on the shoals of Roanoke Island, VA. The folks rowing the ship were black. So, all of them were stranded, and Indians appeared in the scenerio...Eventually, the whites, blacks, indians inter-married....hence Melungeons. I had someone suggest to me that my Collins family were Melungeons, which didn't hold water. The Black Irish or Black Dutch, usually just means a Spanish connexion...somewhere. Jan C. First off, there's more than one cause for a person to have high blood pressure and, consequently, there's more than one type of medication to treat it. Basically and very generalized: Some people have a tendency to water retention which, in turn, causes an increase in their blood pressure. They are generally prescribed medications that are diuretics to eliminate the excess fluid in their systems. Others are hypertensive due to stress and need beta- blockers to counter the signals generated as a result of the stress. Still others are a combination of the two and require a combination beta-blocker and diuretic. Exercise and diet are very important factors in helping to control blood pressure as is trying to reduce the factors that are causing the stress, if possible. Salt reduction is especially important to individuals who retain fluid. Best, SueB

    3. There is no cure-all for high BP... I'm a salt addict. Take salt & pepper away from me & I would wither away. But I love ice-water & drink a quart per day, at least. My mother retains water and she could care less. She hates water & ice cubes. Her BP is sometimes high, and she's 85 yrs old...she says she was "born with high BP." And high Cholesterol. My dad died of cancer, which started in his kidney & lower back.... (big 6 ft 2 man)...he NEVER drank water, and very little other liquids....a cup of coffee in the morn., a glass of something with dinner...barely nothing in between. And he never drank booze. His BP was off the chart. She said her little girl was home, she had picked her up at the park , but that Kade and the other little girl were still at the park because they had told her they were not ready to go home yet, and by the way, I should check Kade's breath because her little girl told her Kade had gotten dead drunk on beer she got from some older kids at the park. I went to the park, picked up the two girls, smelled Kade's breath, no beer, she wasn't drunk, etc. From the story I heard fro! >m Kade and the other girl, they had wanted to come home with the woman and her daughter, but the other girl hadn't wanted to leave the park, was mad because her mother had come to pick her up, called Kade and friend several choice nasty names, and had lied to her mother about Kade wanting to stay at the park. The next day this nasty talking little girl, age 8, goes to school and tells everyone that Kade was drunk at the park, and told the principal to check Kade's school bag, which is jam packed with various things. The principal collars Kade, searches her backpack and find three packs of my cigarettes in it. Kade swears up and down she did not put the cigarettes in there, and since we all know our children and know when they lying, I believe Kade. The nasty talking little girl had been at our house all weekend, by the way. > >The way I read it, the nasty little girl put the cigarettes in the bag, in an attempt to get Kade in trouble. This little girl is very disturbed, I have commented to my adult friends several times that I didn't think the child was wired right. This is the daughter of the woman who tried to kill herself a few weeks back by jumping off her second story balcony onto a patio. > >Anyway, here's where I am perplexed. Why did that woman leave two 9 year old girls alone in a park after dark ? Especially after she had been told, wrongly as it turns out, that one of them was drunk and around older guys ? I was so very tempted to call the police on the woman and have her charged with child endangerment, but I already have enough problems with these neighbors who think I am over protective. I just made the decision that we don't know this woman and her daughter any more, the child will not be in my house nor will Kade go to their house any more. Some people around me are faulting me for this stance, saying I am making a mountain out of a molehill. > >What do you folks think ? > >Jack Childers in OKC >International Society of BlackSheep Genealogists >http://www.gbnf.com/genealogy/childers/html/surnames.htm >"I've traveled a long way and some of the roads were not paved" >Jaxone1234@msn.com > > >==== BLACKSHEEP-CHAT Mailing List ==== >Blacksheep-Chat-L@rootsweb.com is a wide spectrum Chat List, Topics allowed are almost anything.restrictions are: >Political discussion, religious prosylitizing, and aggressive behavior, any of these topics will result in restricted priveleges. > >============================== >To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: >http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 >

    3. Mike - I've seen (and been involved in), the Melungeon story on computer for years, and I'm still confused. Jan C. 3. I know...it's catch 22...what I wonder about is, my BP pill is about the size of an "o".... so why can't they suggest something I could eat that would help, instead of a pill? Exercise & more vegetables & low salt does not help high BP. It's hard for me to imagine that the "o" pill contains enough of anything to help, and they cost $105.00 for 90 tabs. I'm about to stop taking it. Same goes for Estrogen...women shouldn't take it. The most common type of Breast Cancer tests positive for Estrogen...meaning it feeds off Estrogen, and needs it to survive.
