    3. We've got that magazine, Jan C. But, I've read enough of that article to know that I don't want to finish reading it. I'd never enjoy eating again. It doesn't matter when meat animals have been raised and slaughtered, there's always, since the first one, been a good chance of contamination. We may be working in bigger numbers now, but nothing has really changed. Cattle live in dirt and excrement. They always have. The ground beef is the most dangerous and I can't remember the last time I bought it, for a number of reasons. The beef in roasts, steaks, etc.--you can wash the outside, and the outside's also exposed to the most heat to kill germs. The interior meat isn't nearly as much to worry about. Chickens have always carried salmonella and other things and we know that we're supposed to cook that and pork til well done. Not a hard thing to do. Fresh fish prepared by a knowledgeable person is still a really safe thing to eat, even raw. (I love sushi.) My husband makes a mean blackened salmon that's just done enough on the inside to melt in your mouth. I'm almost 51 and I've had food poisoning only once, last year, and it was from eating potato salad at an upscale chain restaurant. So, whatever I've been doing has been fine and I don't intend to change. (I do buy cage free chicken eggs and chicken and meats raised without antibiotics and other stuff added whenever possible, because it tastes better, and I buy veggies at the farmer's market when possible--fresh and good tasting.) I don't mind a few blemishes on fruit and veggies. If the bugs don't want to eat it, why should I? Anyway, what we don't know probably won't hurt us any more than it already has. Although--due to NAFTA being passed--we do have more to fear from pesticides on fruits and vegetables from Mexico. They use things that we can't even think about using on our crops here. jan G. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "jcurtis" <jcurtis@redrock.net> Reply-To: BLACKSHEEP-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com To: BLACKSHEEP-CHAT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [BSChat] Re: Beef & chicken Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 21:08:19 -0600 I just read an article in National Geographic (May issue 2002), about "FOOD - How Safe, How Altered." Chickens are dirty little things, and there's a pic. of cattle feedlot in Colorado, that pens 100,000 cattle for slaughter. It talks about the risk of fecal contamination, and disease among large-scale agriculture. So I have differ with you on the selection process of meat being raised commercially for us to eat. Those 100,000 cattle are covered in mud, shit, etc. Then they haul them in for slaughter, and maybe they aren't very careful, and hair, microbes, bacteria, etc. cling to the final meat product, e.g., hamburger. I'm not squeamish about eating meat...but I've never eaten any meat *rare* or even medium rare. The only time I eat chicken if it's almost burned to a crisp, same with pork. I like some fish, but it has to be baked or deep-fried crispy. 1. [BSChat] Mother's Day
    2. I have always appreciated Mother's Day. When I was a child we would make special gifts and cards in school to give to our Moms. Usually our painted handprints, a salt dough pinched pot, something with yarn. I always loved that. My ma was a practicing alcoholic at the time, but I NEVER would have not made/given her something. She is in NO way perfect, but you only get one Mom, and I love her. I didn't understand or appreciate why we went to the cemetery every Mother's Day to place camellias on my dads mom's grave. I knew she had passed on, that he loved and missed her, but I was just too young to understand. I just had to send my husband and kids out kicking and screaming to go get me (AND his Mother!) a card to have for tomorrow. I guess things have changed. Anything that is made at school is split with the stepmother. They ignored my bday this past Wednesday, but not Mother's day! I think kids should remember their Mom's. I shouldn't have to raise my voice to make them remember. We are a pretty happy family, too. They don't hate me, but probably resent me right now. Sorry for venting-please remember you Mom's tomorrow, even if they aren't perfect. I will be placing camellias on my grandmothers grave, flowers from the same bush she planted 50 years ago.

Grandma amy also come and "get" them from school and such. The problem is in communicating the DANGER of "going" with or near someone. I am really concerned because my 7 year old is at the age where most kidnapped little girls are, 6-9 years old. And she is very "trusting", and friendly. The password was Mermaid for friend's daughter (she's 18 now so I don't think it's important any more). Grandparents and parents and one local friend had the password. We even tested the kids a couple of times. They passed. In any given emergency we thought that should cover most situations. I know I had to use the password when I picked up friend's daughter from 1st grade when younger sibling had to go to emergency room. It worked. EdrieAnne IBSSG

So the atmosphere is a wary one. When I was at Clark AB in the Phillipines there was a real problem with the locals "rolling" the GIs. 3. Hey Jeff, you comment about something being stole and gotten off of the base makes it theirs, reminds me of the official policy the Oklahoma State Penitentiary use to have, but in reverse. If you could get it to your cell, it was yours ! The state did not furnish wood paneling, but if they came into your cell and it was wood paneled, it was legal. If you got caught smuggling the wood paneling out of the furniture factory and attempting to walk it across the yard you got busted and sent to lockup, but once in your cell it was yours ! If the warden's window unit disappeared and turned up in your cell, it was yours ! That was back in the good ol days. Nowadays they are subject to put you on lockup for the things you actually are authorized to have . Another funny story about the good old days. There use to be a deputy warden who sold Mason shoes on the side. If he heard through the grapevine that you had done something illegal, like maybe making homebrew, he would spot you on the yard one day and whip out an order form for shoes and tell you to sign it so he could withdraw the money for a pair of shoes from your account. If you said, "Hell, I don't want any wing tip alligator loafers, why should I sign that withdrawal slip ?" he would respond, "Fine, then I'm going to lock you up for making homebrew!!". Surprisingly enough, the inmate bought the shoes ! I had so many pairs of ugly Mason shoes I could have gone into the shoe business myself ! And the deputy warden double dipped you. Pretty soon he would shake down your cell and if you had more than the allotted amount of shoes the rule book said you could have he would confiscate the shoes as contraband and sell them to someone else ! Yes indeed, he had quite a r! acket going there. Jack Childers in OKC

It makes me feel so secure to be able to sit at my computer and monitor the little screen the cameras are hooked up to. Now I can see just who or what the dog in the back yard is barking at. The way my front room is set up my front door area has no windows and if someone rings the doorbell I have to look through the peep hole to see who it is. Now all I have to do is look at the security screen ! Neat.
