    3. Hi Mike No problem, and I do know what you mean. But, rape doesn't always happen with a male body part. That's why castration (surgical or chemical) doesn't help. You never know what new idea they'll want to try. I don't know how old a man has to be before he's not considered a threat anymore, or what disability there would have to be. I don't want to support the perverts in a jail or hospital either, lobotomized or not. But, unless they kill someone, our laws don't presently allow us to kill them. So--what to do? They get out in 5-15 years as it stands. Sometimes less. And if we don't know who they are and where they are, they keep doing what they've done. Ja ng. ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Shuler Michael" <grinch42@mindspring.com> Reply-To: grinch42@mindspring.com To: "J. Garland" <zippywebgenie@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [BSChat] Megan's Law Date: Tue, 14 May 2002 17:42:58 -0500 Jan, while I certainly see the point you're making (and have no disagreement with it), I'm going to stick my opinion in just as something to chew on... There is not SATISFACTORY cure for pedophiles, since we're talking orientation modification, and the only way I can think of to affect that would be a partial lobotomy. Which, of course, would render the offender incapable of endangering mankind, but would also relegate the individual to be a ward of the state for the remainder of their lives. I don't know about Ms Garland, but I certainly wouldn't wish to support that slime forever! Since I speak from the prospective of someone who got their psychological training in the ministry, I'm undoubtedly slanted toward that point of view, but I would think that as they age the male molesters in particular would prove to be less of a threat due to physical limitations due to their longevity. This does not mean that I think they should wander the streets with other people to whom they might be a danger, I just have to believe (maybe because I can't look on humans as inherently evil) that at some time in their dotage they would be rendered physically incapable of doing harm. Child molestation is certainly a concern for me, as well as anyone else, since I have 8 grandchildren, and will soon have ggrandchildren, in addition. You needn't respond to this if you don't wish...I just feel the need to vent sometimes ;-). Mike IBSSG > [Original Message] > From: J. 3. I wonder why it is that people don't think I know what I am talking about ? Before I even sent that first message where I said our Oklahoma City police would only tell you about a sex offender if you asked by name I had already checked it out through the OKC police department. As I use to tell folks in prison, If I tell you a chicken dips snuff, check under his wing to find his can. Being human I am prone to mistakes, but if I make a mistake I will readily admit it. I ain't mad at anyone, just pointing out that unlike some posters I have seen on some lists I do not just jot off an item off the top of my head. I at least give it some thought and like to think I know what I am talking about. Jack Childers in OKC

    3. <<BTW, on a personal level, do you enjoy being called a liar? Ostracized and ridiculed by your own family? This is no fun, I don't recommend placing yourself in that position, ever.>> No one enjoys being called a liar, Aleta. But I come from a family of independent thinkers and if anyone of us know we are speaking the truth, being called a liar wouldn't stop us. Especially as adults. We don't fear being ostracized or shunned or ridiculed because it doesn't happen, no matter what our differences. Nor is anyone called a liar. If that is truly the case in your family, then I truly feel sorry for you. And even more sorry that the same family that ostracizes and ridicules those who speak the truth still accept and, evidently, respect the pervert. Looks to me like there's some more overall, big, enveloping problems going on. It's a pitiful situation that you've described. I hope the Lord does indeed work it out. 3. Terri, lol yes I know, hey we better stop the CW bashing. They get sensitive here. My youngest was 19 at the time and sang, "I've Got Friends in Low Places" and the entire party joined in. This was the same kid who got buzzed at my anniversary party and they had karaoke. He sang "Born to be Wild" Everyone came up and said, "...but he's so QUIET!" I just hate the ones when someone dies and the other one talks about mommy/daddy being in heaven and the truck gets repo'd. If you play a CW song backwards, the guy gets his truck back, his woman comes back, his dog comes back to life and he joins AA! 3. Well, I guess we can each decide whether what you, as a group, have done to make people aware of that 'man' is enough or not. Saying that "the Lord will handle it" refers to punishment in the future. That doesn't cover events in the here or now, or things that have happened in the past 30 years. You don't know if he visits playgrounds or hangs around schools. Is he active in kids activities in the church? Is he treated there as someone who is trusted? What is the fear factor that you mentioned? His daughters in fear of him? Why? Aren't they adults now? How are they protecting their daughters? The problem is that the only proof is in the memories of those involved. Most want nothing to do with this now that they are out of it. Some will not admit that it happened. If he acted the same with his daughters, it is hearsay on my part. As I said, the Lord will take care of it. I think the neighbor hood was put on alert when the flood of nieces and nephews, the boys couldn't go without their sisters, stopped having overnight visits, which are the custom in my Mom's family. Yes, when we could we told the girls in the neighborhood to not be alone with him, they would look at us strangely, then nod and tell us, "OK." Back then, in this place, adults word was law and the children had to develop their own defense until it was feasible to loosen it. The children here were very good at that. We all have the same belief that the Lord will take care of it. It was our responsibility to try to keep it from happening more, which we did. However nothing in that matter is 100%. This is why our attitude is what it is. We know better, we did actively do our best to teach the younger children that this was not a good thing. Did we paint him into a corner? To some extent, yes. Since he has lived in the same home for over 44 years the neighbors are probably very aware of what he is. I remember my Aunt, his wife who just died, commenting about the children not wanting to play in their yard when he was at home. This is a very strong indication that word got around. When there are 6 small children in a house, half girls, usually there are children in and out in a stream, not so in their home. Those who came by were mostly boys, he didn't bother them. In this neighbor hood it was safer for them to play in the park, two blocks away, than in my Uncle's yard. 1. Re: [BSChat] Megan's Law
    2. J. Garland
    3. Jeff, I know that all states have not been as cooperative as the law intended. But some have and it's worth looking into on the net to see if it's there first. If not, then I guess one would have to got to the authorities for a list and locations. As a side note, in CA, when a home sells, there are required disclosures about the presence of known child molesters. At places on line you can give your zip code and a search is done to tell you the number of convicted offenders are living in that zip code. But it doesn't give names. There was a committee that pushed through Megan's Law. I would hope that those dedicated people would be willing to continue that organization as a non-profit agency, acquiring and posting on the net the names and locations of convicted child molesters. I wonder if they have a website or if the group still exists in some capacity. Since this perversion is not curable, I don't see how the public can be protected unless they either keep the convicts in prison for life or tell us who they are so we can be aware of who our neighbors are. If this makes life difficult for the molesters, so be it. It's the choice they made when they started hurting kids. I'm not in favor of doing doing personal harm to the perverts. Just keeping the kids away from them and making sure the kids know who they need to avoid and which homes and cars to never go into. Most jurisdictions take the vioew that if you come in to the station and ask about a particular PERSON, then they will say yes or no. That isn't the INTENT of the law, but it is how it is interpreted by th police departments, who were forced to do this, but not funded to do it. Some "civil rights" groups are trying (sometimes successfully) to block puvblishing of the whole list, it was PULLED from the internet in California, which is the State where Megan was abducted. (Where were these lawyers when the victim's rights were violated?) Check on the internet for "Megan's Law" and see what is happening nationally. Jeffery G. So true, as a victim and survivor of sexual abuse, I totally agree, sometimes people have a hard time believing it. Stigma again, And generations of keeping the family secrets........... Mine is generational incest, my mother knew her Uncle molested her sister, so they sent her away. She now believes her mother was also a victim of incest, and we of course found intermarriage all over her side of the family. The sister that moved away never came back or keep in touch with them. She is dead now. I don't blame her. He did it to her till she got her period. How tragic!!!!!! She had a good life though, and became an RN. Married well and had children. People that speak out like you help all of us. Thank You for all you have helped along the way. If one child is saved, it can stop it at least for them.
