    3. Thanks, Robin. Perhaps we can put a practical joke together for them. <G> I'll be in touch. They leave on the 9th, I think, latest word. He has been hearing good things about the city. But, I still think it's going to be a bit of a shock. Explained to him today about how it's going to be green all year, except when it's white. That you don't have to water you lawn and that 9 days without rain is a drought. He didn't know you can occasionally get tornadoes, either. It's going to be a very different place for him. 3. Sharon, jan is pretty much 100% right (get that head swelling down jan), every now and then I have freezes and crashes, and have recently reformatted, I have 8gig hard drive and 128k ram memory, get everything off the Pc that you don't use or need, and save all your stuff to disc, Cd is good cos it stores more than floppy, save your favourites folder etc, print off anything you can etc, then take the cover off the CPU, mine falls off easily! and get teh hoover around the fan and heat sink get rid of dust that does accumlate whatever you do to try and prevent it. I can't comment on prices of rnew stuff, its darned expensive by US standards over this side of the pond. reformatting is a drag, but does put the PC back to "day one" and you can start afresh installing stuff. I am also running windows 98, and have no wish to change, never got to grips with win 2000, its more "office" style, and XP has a few gremlins left to be ironed out yet. beofre spending a lot of cash, that may or may not be within your budget, try the reformatting, and if its still a problem then look at a new PC, I doubt ath tsupport for 98 will die out for at least 3 years, after all win 95 is 7 years old now! 3. You raise an interesting point. And it's something I should ask my son about. I know that you really have to keep magnets away from floppy discs and 'magnetic strips' that contain data, and probably zip drives too. But, the strongest magnet we have in this house came from a dismantled hard drive. It's the niobium variety and is so strong that you don't want to get a pinch of your skin between the magnet and some metal. It snaps together really fast and truly hurts! Like I said, this thing came from inside a hard drive. So...I don't know how a magnet can hurt the hardware in a computer box. I would have thought so, too, if we didn't have this magnet and know exactly where it came from. If anyone has a explanation, I'd like to know more. 3. Thanks, Jan. Excellent advice. I am leaning towards a new computer. How long before Windows98 will no longer support programs, as 95 doesn't now? And this machine is only 64MB, expandable to 256, with 8 GB hard drive. If I knew more, I could fiddle and tweak the thing, but I know zip. Dust? It's definately a design flaw when they have the fan blowing air that's already hot onto the processor!! Seems like some good cross ventillation would be in order, but what do I know? My pc now has an additional fan on the thing and the so-called 'heat sink' has been completely removed. For the uninitiated, the heat sink looks sort of like a small but sophisticated bed of nails that is *supposed* to draw and dissipate the heat from the unit. 3. Sharon and Mellie If you get a new computer right now, it'll come loaded with XP. My husband uses it and so far has not bugs. I'm still using ME and it's fine too, but I've heard of problems. (I did have conflict with a game software, uninstalled the game and all is well again.) No big head here. All I know I got from my son. He's the knowledgeable one. <g> BTW, my son is moving to Cincinnati OH, leaving in a couple weeks *on my birthday!* I asked him "so how are you going to make this better??" What's a mom for if not an occasional guilt trip, eh? <G> I also asked him, since his girlfriend is going with him, why don't they just get married. He says they stay in separate rooms, 'cause she hogs all the blankets. Always the joker, that one. But I woldn't recommend this for everyone. I once had a cpu that was really overclocked and the only way I could solve the heat problem was to remove the cover. -- Wild Bill, North Pole, Alaska Life is what happens to you while you're making other plans.
