My brother has lived with a ghost for about 25 years. A little old lady that comes to check up on them once in a while, they think it is the previous owner of their house. When the kids were little she would check to see if they had kicked out of the covers, if so she let my brother and his wife know. She let them see a lightness where she would be, never completely materialized for them, but you could catch her out of the corner of your eye. They didn't care that she lived with them, she just became a member of the family, and she comes and goes whenever she wants to. It is also a free download. I would advise you to play with PAF a little. Click on the tabs at the top and see what is in them. See what it will do before you go to another program. I have PAF along with Ancestral Quest. I'm happy with both. Ancestral Quest does some nice reports. I haven't put pictures in, but I know that it will do so. Adn guess who I look like? (UH_AR-R-R-GH!) In fact, people at work who'd enver seen a picture of my father were picking my grandfather out of a group college photo! It's pretty exciting when that happens. The first pictures I ever saw of my father's parents were sent to me by some third cousins! I went to the opthamologist's office with my husband, David this morning in case he needed someone to drive him home. He had gotten something into his eye at work on Fri. A man came in the waiting room and asked him if he was related to B.J. Koons (who is David's 2nd cousin) and introduced himself by saying that his daughter was married to B.J. I told him that I had been corresponding by email with his wife on the genealogy of the Koons family. He brought her into the waiting room. We were so happy to finally meet each other and put faces with the names! Jinnye Faye Parker wrote: My uncle(by marriage) got in touch with me a week ago. That's really neat stuff there with those pictures! Reminds me of the treasure box that she sent down from my mom's things. There's a TON of folks that I don't recognize but some that I do, including my adoptive dad at about age 12 or so with his mom. He was wearing knickers in the picture! ;-) Best, SueB
Jeff: Is there a list at rootsweb to discuss such issues as GEDCOMS and data sharing? I am going to run into compatibility issues when I am ready to upload my data to Genconnect, too, I might as well deal with them while I'm at it. Also, I need to find some documentaion on Puritan dating. I guess FTM doesn't know about it! Does anyone know of a genealogy program that imports GEDCOM's from PAF and puts out nice reports, "books" with pictures and stories and that sort of thing? I got an older version, 7.0, of Family Tree Maker Deluxe Edition, and it can't even import dates. It has trouble if you don't write "about" correctly, and the paf form is "abt", and it may have trouble with 1636-1637! I've got people telling me I've got to go back and manually reenter all of those dates, and in FTM format so that 1636/1637 abecomes 1636-1637, which loses the fact that it's a Puritan date and makes it look ambiguous. With a large database of course I'm not going to do that. There also seem to be other bugs not designed with people serious about genealogy in mind, such as "books" have indexes but they don't let you list dates or identification numbers with the names! Another problem people were reporting; FTM mangles facts and attributes on importing such that if you list occupation, date and place the actual occupation gets listedin the place field. It is the height of stupid that any genealogical program can't import from PAF - does anyone know of a program that does it better? I'm a little scared to go out and try another program now. Only reason why I want another program is to do nice reports; I am satisfied with PAF for data entry and exchange. Come to think of it, noone has ever sent me a GEDCOM that the details were mangled when I opened the file. PAF obviously imports from other programs without mangling!
