    3. Hello, Does anyone on this list have connections to Arkansas Blackshears/Blackshers or those of non-caucasian ancestry? My great-grandmother is listed as black in the 1880 census but white after she married my great-grandfather, a white man. Below are the few records that I have and I hope to tie the family together. I would very much appreciate hearing from anyone with insight or suggestions. 3. Jo-Ann Stephens- At that time , Indians were listed in the same way on the Census- Black, Copper, Mulatto, Brown, ect... If she was Indian, married a white, she was then able to be "white", especially if she was of light skin, which many Cherokee were. Both of my Great Great Grandmothers were Indian, but they did not register for Roll numbers, so even though the family has been told they were Indian, there is no way to get documentation, and if she was Indian, it will be hard (impossible) to trace her past her marriage into your family. My Great Aunt Sybil "Blackshear" Moore, just recently told my Mom's cousin JoAnn, that Grandma Mary Ester "Rushing" Brannen, was full Indian. I can not find her before her marriage to Joseph Edward Brannen. My Grandma Opal "Blackshear" Wallis, Great Aunt Sybil's sister, never mention her Grandmother being Indian. Found this out very, very recently. Sandy Scofield skscofield@sbcglobal.net

    3. I have a picture that was sent to my Mom "Neva "Wallis" Miller, got from Du Wayne, who got it from Royce, who got it from Jack Benham. It is a picture of my Great Granddad George L. Blackshear, bringing in the first bale of cotton , Oct 1, 1924, Bailey Boro. Ginned by R. L. Brown, Muleshoe Texas. He looks like a apache Indian, sitting on top of a old model-T side board truck. The letter says that Jack had stopped to look at Royce's great Grandfathers headstone. In relating his small world story to the guys at the gin Peanut Hawkins got up, went into the back room and came back with the photograph. Mom also sent me a picture of Mama Brannen (Blackshear) (my Grandma Opal "Blackshear" Wallis and my Aunt Reta "Wallis" Dees look like her. If any one has any pictures from my line, would really like to E-Mail exchange photo's with you, to add to both our family albums. My parents are Kenneth Eli Miller & Neva Joy Wallis Miller, who will be married 50 years come this Nov. Sandy Scofield skscofield@sbcglobal.net

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/1NE.2ACIB/1.91.137.1.2.2 Message Board Post: I have a copy of Blacksheariana on CD. This book was published in 1954 and contains family history on the Blackshear shire shere sher family. Everyone has a little different last three letters. You will find in this book records on those in the family that contributed. It would be a good jumping off point for detailed research. In my family tree it appears that there are two different African American sets of Blackshires. One originates in Oklahoma where intermarriage with freed slaves, indians with Jesse Blackshire and his kids produce a significant African American group of cousins. The others are the children of or took the names of the slave owners. If you would like the cd please send me your address and I will send it out. jb
