    1. [BLACKSHEAR]Welcome to the Blackshear Group
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. https://Groups.io/g/Blackshear Welcome to Groups.io, our new home for genealogical discussions. This is an exciting time with a very impressive website and the opportunity to rekindle our communications and, perhaps, revive research that has been set aside for a time. Diane and I want to encourage you to make us of this group with your brick walls, successes, questions and whatever answers you may have for others' queries. To begin with, introductions are encouraged, including some history about yourself etc. If we can feel like a "family" we might get more out of being here. We definitely do not want to make this such a strict environment that you are discouraged from entering or starting discussions. If you on the Rootsweb list have not yet joined at groups.io, simply click on the link at top of this message and click "Join This Group." We want you to enjoy being a part of this group and to be glad you joined in the first place. If you have other group connections where you may spread the word about us that will be great as well. Looking forward to hearing from you all, Jim "Pops" Jackson and Diane Sowden

    1. [BLACKSHEAR]Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team If anyone has an interest in finding alternative communication possibilities and/or suggestions for alternatives, please send a note to the list to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [BLACKSHEAR]Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

    1. [BLACKSHEAR] FYI-IF YOU ARE IN EAST TEXAS-GENEALOGY CONFERENCE SATURDAY APRIL 18 2015 JACKSONVILLE TEXAS-WALK-INS ACCEPTED
    2. dbcates via
    3. There is still time to register for the CCGS-ETHA FAMILY HISTORY FAIR on Saturday, April 18, 2015, at the First United Methodist Church, 1031 SE Loop 456, in Jacksonville organizers said earlier this week. Late registrations and walk-ins will still be accepted on Saturday morning. However, organizers suggest the best plan is to call in or e-mail your lunch reservation and pay at the door Saturday morning. Contact the Cherokee County Genealogical Society at 903-586-0135, ccgs@suddenlink.net or P. O. Box 1332, Jacksonville. "White Elephant" items are still being sought for the silent auction to be held during the morning sessions of the fair. Donations can be made by contacting CCGS member, Rev. Barbara Hugghins, at 1st UMC, Jacksonville or CCGS Treasurer Helen Marable of Jacksonville. Rev. Hugghins and Mrs. Marable are in charge of organizing the CCGS-ETHA silent auction. Speakers for the CCGS-ETHA FAMILY HISTORY FAIR will include Mrs. Peggy Lloyd of the Southwest Arkansas Regional Archives in Washington, Arkansas, for three sessions. Mrs. Lloyd's third session from 2-3PM will be "George Martin of Angelina County, Texas, and Hempstead County, Arkansas, in Reconstruction." George Martin was an Angelina County official during the turbulent times at the end of the Civil War when the Angelina County seat was at Homer. Mr. Martin eventually left the area and eventually settled for a time in Hempstead County, Arkansas. One of the events that occurred during these turbulent times was the mortal wounding of the Angelina County Sheriff in a "shootout" on the courthouse square in Homer. More details about Angelina County's history in that time period can be learned by attending Mrs. Lloyd's session during the fair organizers said. Dr. Richard Hackney of Jacksonville will give one session on preservation of African-American Cemeteries in East Texas. Participating in a series of sessions on Cherokee County Cemeteries will be CCGS president Gordon Bennett, CCGS Web Master Mrs. Kaye Slover of Nacogdoches, CCGS 2nd Vice-President David Henderson and new CCGS member George Martin. Keynote speaker will be John Versluis. Dean of the Texas Heritage Museum at Hill College, Hillsboro, Texas, who will also present two additional morning sessions following his keynote address beginning at 9:00AM. Kevin Klaus, Information Specialist and Archivist, General Land Office, Austin will present two afternoon sessions. Mrs. Carol Taylor of Greenville, Texas, will be presenting four sessions on "So You Want to Climb Your Family Tree!" Her session titles are "First Steps," "Spreading Out," "Reaching Even Farther" and "Now Down to the Roots of Your Tree." Attendees in Mrs. Taylor's four session one day class can learn how to begin finding out if they are who they think they are just like the stars of the television programs of a similar title, organizers said. George Avery PhD, an archeologist at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, will present one morning session about grave marker customs and designs found in East Texas cemeteries. More information can be obtained about the upcoming CCGS-ETHA FAMILY HISTORY FAIR by visiting the CCGS web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~txcherok, via e-mail to ccgs@suddenlink.net or by calling 1-903-586-0135 and via regular mail at Post Office Box 1332, Jacksonville, Texas, 75766-1332. Brochures, either printed on paper or via e-mail, containing more detailed information about the CCGS-ETHA FAMILY HISTORY FAIR can be obtained by contacting the society. Cost for attending the one-day fair is $35.00 including a full plate lunch, discounted to $15.00 for CCGS or ETHA members. Lunch for the event is being provided by the 1st UMC Adult Mission Group to fund local missions including the church's food pantry. Anyone interested in researching their family history and genealogy is invited to attend the CCGS meetings and join the society members said. Free genealogy and historical research help is available after the regular CCGS business meetings and programs. CCGS dues can be paid at any society meeting or by mail. Annual membership dues are $20.00(single) and $25.00 for a two-member household. Membership includes issues of the CCGS publication, TREE TALK. Single issues of TREE TALK are also available for purchase by regular mail or e-mail. 1. [BLACKSHEAR] GENEALOGY PROGRAM SAT MARCH 29 2014 JACKSONVILLE TEXAS-POSTED BY REG LIST MEMBER
    2. dbcates
    3. Space is still available for participation in the CCGS-ETHA FAMILY HISTORY FAIR scheduled for Saturday, March 29, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church, 1031 SE Loop 456, Jacksonville, Texas, organizers said earlier this week. “We still have seats available in all of the dozen breakout lecture sessions and there is still room for exhibits and vendors in Waller Hall, the church’s fellowship hall,” organizers said. The event is being organized by the Cherokee County Genealogical Society and sponsored by a grant to CCGS by the East Texas Historical Association, SFASU, Nacogdoches. The hours of the one day event are 9AM to 3 PM. The church will open at 8:00 AM for vendors and exhibitors to begin setting up and for checking in at the registration table. Because of the ETHA grant the fee to attend the CCGS-ETHA Family History Fair is very reasonable CCGS committee members said. The fee includes a hot lunch provided by the church’s adult mission group. The fee will be discounted for CCGS and ETHA members and will include the hot lunch. The Family History Fair is a fund raising project for both CCGS and the adult missions group of First United Methodist, Jacksonville. The adult mission group supports the church food pantry for local missions. “CCGS is very fortunate to partner with ETHA and the Jacksonville First United Methodist Church.” “The church has a very fine facility with a floor plan and space to support events of this type. CCGS has not held an event of this type for over a dozen years. We have no plans to make this an annual event. We do hope to have more special programs in the future combining history and genealogy. Just not annually on this scale!” Members of the CCGS committee planning the Family History Fair are CCGS President Gordon Bennett of Jacksonville, CCGS 1st Vice President Vivian Cates of Alto, CCGS member and Assoc. 1st UMC Barbara Hugghins of Jacksonville. The committee is being assisted by CCGS member Deborah Burkett of Troup and other CCGS members working on publicity and setting up the event. The one day Family History Fair program sessions are set up like the Angelina College Genealogy Conference still continuing to be held on that campus every summer. “This is a one day event. The AC Conference has grown to three days.” Mrs. Cates first organized the AC Conference beginning in 1997. “Another speaker on Cherokee County Cemeteries has been added in the last session on Tract III at 2:00 PM since our original fair brochure and publicity was sent out,” Mr. Bennett said. Long time CCGS member Kaye Slover of Nacogdoches will present her power point program on Cherokee County Cemeteries. Both Mrs. Slover and her husband have deep roots in Cherokee County with many family members buried in Cherokee County cemeteries. Mrs. Slover is the web master for the CCGS web site. Much of her cemetery research is posted on the award winning CCGS web site. Some of the book sellers scheduled for the event are ETHA, Ericson Books, David Schochler of Diboll, Winnie Graham of Huntington, and Deborah Burkett of Troup. There is no charge for table/booth space. Sellers are being asked to donate a percentage back to the CCGS. Some of the other exhibits and information tables are expected to include the Cherokee County Historical Commission, Reynolds Family Association, SFASU East Texas Research Center, ETHA, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and United Daughters of the Confederacy. The 1st UMC has free WiFi. Attendees are welcome to bring laptop computers to compare notes and visit with other participants in an informal “Genealogy Café,” committee members said. While walk-ins will be accepted, advance reservations for the Family History Fair are strongly advised by society members especially for the lunch count. To obtain further information and to register for the event contact the society by regular mail at P. O. Box 1332, Jacksonville, Texas 75766, via e-mail to ccgs@suddenlink.net, or by calling 1-903-586-0135. For prices and more details on the programs and the speakers visit the CCGS web site at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txcherok. There will be three tracts of speakers with four sessions each. Dr. Scott Sosebee, director of ETHA and an associate professor of history at SFASU will be the key-note speaker at 9AM. Speaking sessions will begin at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM with 12:00-1:00 lunch break and then 1:00 PM and 2:00 2PM. Carol Taylor of Greenville, Texas, is the speaker in Tract I entitled CIVIL WAR PAPER TRAILS. Mrs. Taylor presented a similar program series at the Angelina College Genealogical Conference last July and will be presenting speaking sessions on similar topics in Houston early this month. Her four session titles are "During the War: Records Created 1861 – 1865," "When the War Was Over" "Women, Children and Other Civilians," and "Southern Claims Commission Papers." Mrs. Taylor, a retired teacher and an avid genealogist for years, earned her master’s degree in history from Texas A&M in Commerce. Christi Watkins R.N. Chief Clinical Officer at Palestine Regional Medical Center, will present two sessions in Tract II, “Are You Related to Royalty??, “ and “Skeletons in the Closet.” Ms. Watkins has extensive expertise in the field of DNA testing for identification purposes and worked in New York City after 9/11. Still in Tract II, Carolyn Reeves Ericson of Nacogdoches will present one session on “Early Virginia Research” including information on the early Germanna Colony and Ancient Planters. Mrs. Ericson is a genealogist, historian, author and publisher, operator of Ericson Books and writes a weekly genealogy column for two East Texas newspapers. The fourth session in Tract II will be present by Linda Reynolds, Director of the East Texas Research Center. The ETRC is located on the second floor of Steen Library at SFASU in Nacogdoches. Reynolds’ topic will be “Records Preservation.” In Tract III John Garbutt of Rusk, Special Projects Administrator will present the first session, “History of the Texas State Railroad.” David Schochler of Diboll, Texas, will present two sessions entitled “Genealogical Research in Western Europe” and “So, your GGGrandfather was born in the Sundgav! Now what?” In 2013 Mr. Schochler published a book based on his research of his Schochler family who settled in Cherokee County, Texas. His previous programs for two area genealogy societies have been present in period costume. That would be helpful. Do you mean Anderson County, Texas? Slave owning Blackshears lived in that area at one time down on the Trinity River bottoms. Is this a white or a black family? Of former slaves who took the Blackshear name, some used a "Blackshire" spelling. If you mean Anderson County, I suggest you contact the genealogy section of Palestine Public Library which has an excellent genealogy section. I think they have a web page, e-mail, phone number etc. I live in adjoining Cherokee County. Our Gen Soc meets in Jacksonville. To my knowledge, at this time Anderson County is being covered by the East Texas Gen Soc. out of Tyler, Texas. I don't know if Anderson County has an active group at this time. If you mean Anderson County, Texas, contact me off line for the name of a contact person in Palestine who is active in the LDS Family History Center there. If she ca! n't help you, she might be able to help you make some contacts. I am on the Blackshear list because one set of my husband's 2 great grandparents were Lovice Blackshear and Henry Dominy who married in Laurens County, Georgia, in 1821. Her father was Alexander Blackshear who died in Henry County, Alabama, where they eventually migrated to and then to East Texas. His line moved from Houston/Trinity County, Texas, to Cherokee County, Texas, c. 1915. I am the designated researcher for the Cherokee County, Texas, Genealogical Society.
