    1. [BLKBURN] ELIAS BLACKBURNE - VIRGINIA 1700s
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: BRASSFIELD/BRASFIELD Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/SNE.2ACIB/1250 Message Board Post: I have just found some papers mentioning Elias Blackburne as the brother-in-law of GEORGE BRASFIELD of Caroline County Virginia. One paper refers to 1747 court case of Patrick Welsh a notorious criminal of the time. George and Elias were among seven men hired to ensure they got Patrick Welsh to court. There was also a court case concerning Elias suing George over bidding on a horse. George's father also George went to Virginia in 1698 and in 1721 bought land around Peumansand but little is known of the early family there. George jnr had sons George and David and possibly other children who all moved to North Carolina. I assume either George's wife was Elias' sister, or Elias' wife was George's sister but I don't know George's wife's name or if he had a sister. Can anyone help please ?

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Blackburn, Bridges Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SNE.2ACIB/1234.1.1.2 Message Board Post: My great great grandmother was Eleanor Blackburn (Nellie) who married John S. Merritt in Washington Co, Indiana in l840. They are found that same year in Crawford Co., census next door to another Merritt/Blackburn combo that had married in l837 and had a little child. The woman's name was Nancy Blackburn...and I want to say his was Elias...Merritt. I have wondered if two brothers didn't marry two sisters. Anyhow, it is thought that Ephraim Blackburn and Elizabeth Bridges were Eleanor's parents. She was born in l8l9 in Indiana. In the l850 census it appears Ephraim and Elizabeth were no longer in the picture, and the children were distributed into friends and family. Eleanor and John had one of these in their home. So this has lead some to believe she is the oldest sibling and took in a younger sister. I have quite a bit on Eleanor/John's children, grandchildren, etc. but since I have not been able to prove definately that Ephraim is more than a "close kinsman" . In an earlier census where the children are not named, there was an age category of the girls where Eleanor could have fit. But that is as close as I could get. I would like to hear what you have VERY much.

Surnames: Blackburn, Merritt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SNE.2ACIB/1245.1 Message Board Post: I have seen something recently about a Thorton Blackburn and wife who escaped to freedom in Canada from Kentucky. He started a transportation business there and was quite successful. When I have been looking for my white Blackburns I ran across them...I am sorry I don't remember the source...but it seems like it was a page that had several people, a William H. Merritt who worked with underground railroad and Harriet Tubman. Maybe search under something to do with Black History Month, or the Underground Railroad. In looking in Ky. I have seen Blackburns and Blackmons, and I specifically remember seeing them listed side by side. I have been looking in veterans lists, and free census records.

Surnames: BLACKBURN, CLEMONS/CLEMMONS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/SNE.2ACIB/871.1.1.1.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: Jamie, I don't have anything on this Benj. F. Blackburn but my gggrandfather was also Benj. Franklin Blackburn, b. ca. 1798 in KY & married Mary Hartley in Nicholas Co. KY in 1819. The Hartleys had previously lived in Harrison Co. Benj. & Mary were in Monroe Co. IN in 1830, 1840, & 1850, then in Brown Co. IN in 1860. I can't locate the parents after 1860 but I have a fairly good record of their children & their families. They had a grandson named Benj. Taylor. One of Benj. & Mary's daughters (Hannah) married David Clemons Jackson in Monroe Co. in 1844. I know very little of his background other than he was born in IN. I suspect that his mother could have been named Clemons/Clemmons due to his middle name. He was orphaned at about age 2 & I haven't been able to learn anything of his early years. You may contact me directly at my e-mail address.
