    1. Re: [BLKBURN] ? William Blackburn & Sabra or Belle
    2. Hello, all! Great to see the discussion going on about William and Sabra Blackburn. As Kay Snow is aware, I've been looking for years for this same couple, and have similar information and frustration, so I have nothing new to add. It was in 1913 when my McNaghten and Blackburn families joined (my father McNaghten, my mother a Blackburn, granddaughter of William and Sabra. But interestingly enough, I'm also seeking information about two other McNaghten/Blackburn unions in my same family. I'm also looking for Alexander Blackburn who married Margaret McNaghten on March 1, 1775 in Canniwago, Adams County, Pennsylvania and his brother Moses Blackburn who married Sarah's sister Margaret McNaghten in York County, PA on Jan. 6, 1780. At least one of these families is said to have later moved to Ohio. Anybody have any information on Alexander and Moses Blackburn? Tom McNaghten [email protected]

    2. Miriam, Thank you for your reply and I do remember that you were the one who gave me the original suggestion that my William was probably the son of Archibald and Isabella. You also suggested that William's wife, who I had as "Sarah BOYLES", might actually have been "Sarah BROYLES". You were correct. That suggestion led me to finding several new lines of Sarah BROYLES's ancestors, including surnames: FOX, KLUG, BRUEL, ROUP, FLEISCHMANN, CASTLER, etc. Sarah BROYLES's father was Simeon BROYLES. Now, thanks to your help, I know where my gg-grandfather, Simeon BLACKBURN (son of William and Sarah) got his name. Thanks again for your suggestions, and I will keep you advised if I come up with a proof of a relationship between my William BLACKBURN, and William and Isabella BLACKBURN of Greene/Washington Co., TN. Best Regards, Doug Scroggs Lee's Summit, MO

    1. Re: [BLKBURN] ? William Blackburn & Sabra or Belle
    2. Kay, Would it help if we made lists of identified Blackburn lines in Arkansas and MO? The Washington/Benton Co. Blackburns were mainly from the Ambrose Blackburn line. There was a line in Pope Co. who came from Lincoln Co. NC. There is another line that descends from LeRoy Blackburn of TN. This line also crosses over into MO. In MO. descendants of Benjamin/Mary Blackburn of Washington'Greene and Jefferson Cos in TN settled in Moniteau, Cole, Miller Co.s. Some Blackburns from the Richard Blackburn line of Va settled in Calloway Co. MO. and some of the James/Jane Blackburn line who settled in Harrison Co. KY made it to Monroe , Marion, Ralls , Shelby Co.s in MO. Blackburns in Cole Co. from TN . Blackburns from Malta Bend (co?) MO from PA. Some in Laclede Co. from IL don't know where before that. Some of the ambrose Blackburn line in Wright Co. MO. Of course, it looks like everybody paused in the western counties before leaping off to OK and TX. Ain't this fun! Miriam B.

    2. Hi Doug, Have you queried about land records in Washington Co.,TN? It appears Wm. might have gone to MO after his father's death in 1823. Wm. inherited much of his father's "plantation" and may have sold out to his brother Samuel who inherited 100 acres or to someome else. A record of sale about that time would be further evidence. Wm.'s sister was the mother of Judge Oliver Hever Hoss, who was prominent in Nevada, MO- I believe still living in c.1940. Maybe you can find some descendants in the area who would have information. I'm a believer in the theory that Archibald is the father of your William. Good hunting Miriam Blackburn

    1. [BLKBURN] BLACKBURNS from Kent, Ontario, Canada
    2. My Blackburns descend from John Blackburn and Rachel Morton - My ggrandfather was Andrew Blackburn (1847-aft 1919) who married Jessie MacVicar (1850-?), both from Chatham Twp, Kent, Ontario. They had six children, Arnold, Elizabeth, Hugh Arnold McVicar, May, Alan Russel, and Robert Duncan (1880-1911) my grandfather. He married Ethel Pullen (1884-1861). Robert Duncan was foreman for Philadelphia Electric and was killed when a power line dropped on him. Would be glad to hear from any cousins out there and am willing to share information. 3. Peggy, My ancestor William b. ? in Va., m. Nancy Price b. 1797 in Va.. They were probably married abt. 1815 in Va. as their first child 'Susan' was born 1816 in Va., their second child 'Preston' (my ancestor) probably was born in Ky. in 1817. They had several other children born in Ky. The last, a Nancy b.1832. Then they show up in Orange Co., Indiana sometime before 1837 as their last two children were born in Indiana. (1837 and 1839) William disappeared before the 1840 census but Nancy and the children were there. Orange County, Northeast Township. They also show up on the 1850 census though most of the children were married by then. Most of them then show up on the Clay County, Illinois census in 1860. My ancestor 'Preston' and at least 2 brothers and a sister then migrated to Missouri for a short time and then Preston and a brother James W. show up in Montague County, Tx.. According to public records, Preston was one of the settlers that drove the Indians out of Saint Jo and made it safe for others to move in. Preston is buried in Montague county near Saint Jo and the city of Montague as are my ggrandparents on my grandmothers side. My grandfather and father were born in Montague County. Shortly after WW1 they moved to near Lawton, Ok. where they are buried. Preston's brother Alfred/Alford moved from Missouri to Arkansas for a while and then on to Oklahoma and is buried in Shawnee, Ok. It seems to me that there are too many Blackburns showing up in the same places at the same time for them not to be related in some way. I think we all have a common ancestor somewhere if we can just figure out who. I have left out the names of many siblings and their spouses to limit the size of this message, but if you think we might have a match I can furnish many of them. 3. Gail, thanks for jumping in. So sorry to hear about all your problems. Going a bit further with this discussion: In the 1860 census, William Blackburn bn. in TN; Sabra bn. in NC. 1870 William Blackburn bn. TN Sabra bn. VA the 2 oldest children bn. in TN and the rest in MO 1880 William d. in 1873, Sabra Blackburn bn. VA VA VA 1900: Sabra Blackburn VA VA VA I have never been able to find a marriage license. I do have William Blackburn's cash record book. In the back some has added the birth and deaths. These 2 pages were not written by William. Anyway, Sabra's entry is: Sabra Blackburn, right above this in pencil is "Watson". This is a quote from Sabra's obituary: "Old Settler Passes Away" "Sabra Watson Blackburn was born in Pittsylvania Co. Va., Dec. 14, 1827. She was married in White Co., middle Tenn., to William S. Blackburn who preceded her to the home beyond 41 years ago. To this union were born eleven children, ten of which lived to be grown, eight of which are still living." I would not argue the fact that someone made a mistake an wrote down Watson instead of Gibson. I will be glad to trade a Watson surname for Gibson, <g> At 08:37 PM 11-12-99 , you wrote: >Well, I guess I don't get to stay silent for long! >And here at Christmas season at that! ; ) > >I would imagine that I am the first person to say that >I think Sabra and Belle Gibson are the same person. >My grandfather, Harmon Franklin Gibson, who died in >1990 gave me the names of all his known ancestors >including the children of Shadrick "Shade" Gibson >and his wife Sarah Dutton Gibson. 1. [BLKBURN] William Blackburn & Sabra or Belle
    2. Gail Lies
    3. Well, I guess I don't get to stay silent for long! And here at Christmas season at that! ; ) I would imagine that I am the first person to say that I think Sabra and Belle Gibson are the same person. My grandfather, Harmon Franklin Gibson, who died in 1990 gave me the names of all his known ancestors including the children of Shadrick "Shade" Gibson and his wife Sarah Dutton Gibson. (So far I have been able to prove all of them except this one) He told who they married, if he knew, and what their children's names were. He stated that one of Shade's older daughters was Belle Gibson and that she married William Blackburn. He could not name all of their children. I found William and Sabra Blackburn on the 1860 Washington County, AR. census and they lived in the same township as Shade and Sarah Gibson. They were also of the correct age and from VA. (By the way, Grandpa lived in Brush Creek township in Washington County, AR. all of his life which is where all of the above lived.) I also understand that there is no proof that Sabra's last name was "Watson". Shadrick and Sarah were both born in 1807 in VA. Their oldest son John stated on his enlistment papers that he was born in Scott County, VA. In 1837 Shadrick and Sarah left VA and moved to Washington County, AR, traveling through IL on the way. They traveled with their William and Elizabeth (Dutton) Gibson who were their brother and sister who married in Scott County, VA in 1826. The dates are from checking where their children were born. The oldest ones were born in VA, then one child from each family was born in IL on the way. The rest of the children were born in AR. When I contacted Kay about the possibility of Sabra being the daughter they called Belle, she was doubtful since she has no record of that nickname or possibility. She did say that a James Gibson signed on some land papers for Sabra but seemingly can't prove who he was. I have been given some clues as to who Shadrick and William's other siblings were and plan on checking out the family connections further. Also my gg grandfathers name was James Gibson. I have to confess that with the death of my father in June from liver and pancreatic cancer and then the added stress of major surgery in September that I have not been back working at my lines like I should. It is my intention to check out this James Gibson. I am trying to prove a lot of things at the moment. One is the possibility that both the Duttons and the Gibsons were of Native American descent. If I find any hint of real data I will be shouting it from the mountain top. In the meantime, feel free to help prove or disprove this possibility. I truly want to know what the truth is! Thanks and sorry for being so long winded! Gail Lies Jonesboro, AR

    3. Hello, here are some more English Blackburns, but in Lancashire. My grandparents emigrated to Canada with the Barr Colonists in 1903, but family history says they came originally from Scotland, so I've been watching the Scottish connections on here. My grandmother was Elizabeth Ellen Blackburn, born Sefton, Lancashire in 1870. Her father was Peter Blackburn born Maghull, in 1838. We know his father's name (Robert) and his siblings' names from the Maghull parish registers, but nothing more. However, the family seems to have observed both the Scottish naming conventions for children and the habit of giving the name of a child who died to the next child of that gender, so that would seem to bear out the Scots origin. I've been lurking for a while since there didn't seem to be anyone I was likely to be related to, but who knows. Sarah BROYLES on 30 Mar 1824 in Greene Co., TN; d. 2 Jan 1850 in Cass Co., MO. William Benjamin BLACKBURN, his wife Sarah Broyles BLACKBURN, and their first 6 children (Isabella, Archibald, Alfred, William Thomas, Samuel, and Simeon) moved to Dayton twp, Cass Co., MO ca 1838. Their last four children (Henry, Mary Victoria, Elizabeth, and Melville Rush) were born in Cass Co., MO. Several researchers have suggested that my William was probably the son of Archibald BLACKBURN and his second wife, Isabella (last name inknown). Would like to know if anyone has any further information on Isabella's ancestry or siblings, or if they can help me confirm that my William Benjamin BLACKBURN was the son of Archiblald BLACKBURN and Isabella (last name unknown) of Greene/Washington Co., TN. 3. Hi to all, In reading all of your messages I'm beginning to see a pattern tying several lines together if just a few things can be verified. Does anyone know the parents of the James Blackburn b. abt 1810 in Tn. and Israel Blackburn who m. Elizabeth ? Could they possibly be brothers? Do they have a brother named William? My long lost ancestor William Blackburn also had descendants who migrated to Missouri and some of them were buried in Shawnee, Ok. There are other similarities, but you all know that all Blackburns named their descendants the same, I think just to confuse us. They are all probably watching and laughing at us as we struggle to sort things out. Sam kgs wrote: > Hi Peggy, at least one question has been solved. Ohio after Dec. 1863. They had 10 children when they left Ohio and moved to DeKalb Co. Missouri. Thomas died in 1868. Margaret remarried Isaac Veach after 1870. I do know that Margaret died in 1907 in Gentry Co. Missouri while living with her youngest daughter, Adaline Blackburn Clouse. Would like to know what happened to George, John, William,James, Ross, Charles, Hannah, Rachel, Mary& Adaline Blackburn after 1870. >>
