Yes! my family is descendent 's of this line of Blackburns. Thank you for posting this as we did not know Rippon Lodge had been placed for sale. My cousins were at Rippon Lodge this summer and returned home with some beautiful photo's from inside the house. I will have to visit our library and check this out further. Thanks!!! Do you have any info.of Edward Blackburn who left and lived and died in Bermuda?
Hello Listmates, On 18JAN2000 the Washington (DC) Post published an articl reporting that Rippon Lodge is being placed on the real estate market. (The article appears on pages B1 and B5.) As the article notes, Rippon Lodge is the oldest Colonial house still standing (after 275 years) along the Potomac. This home, located in Prince William County, Virginia, was designed and occupied by architect Richard Blackburn, who is also known as the designer of another nearby estate -- Mount Vernon. Richard's son, Col. Thomas Blackburn served as aide-de-camp to General Washington and was socially linked to the Washingtons. Until about 01FEB2000 the full text of the article will be accessible at <http://search.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/searches/mainsrch/htm>. After arriving at this site you can find the article by entering keyword(s) "Rippon", and then clicking on "Losing Our History." However, if you wish to see the illustrations which accompanied the print version of the article, you will need to visit a library which has a subscription to the Post. If that's not practical, you may be able to persuade me to send a xerox copy. The illustrations include a map, two views of the house, and a photo of the current owner, Barbara Black Decko (a descendant of Richard Blackburn) and her husband. Are any subscribers of this list descendants of the Rippon Lodge Blackburns? (I am not.) Charles A. (Al) Blackburn Columbia MD USA

Kay, I am so sorry to hear of your Mother's passing away. Seems like most of us go though this. Just look at the brightest star in the sky at night and think she is looking down and guiding you. She will always be there in your memory. Peace be with you. Flora Maynard

Hi Joe Carroll, Thanks for clarifying! Now, the Blackburn book shows Josiah and James as twins. Do you have good info on their dob's and can say for sure they are not? Also, (I am just going by the book and have not researched this line) a Samuel or Lemuel is shown, but no Daniel. I wonder if the records were just so bad that no one could say for sure. Oh, I see now you have Alfred Lemuel. Probably some census records show him as Alfred, and others as Lemuel! Do you have good info on Daniel? I am interested in this line for several reasons although it is not my direct line I feel very sure they are related due to time, place, and names. As I mentioned, I have a Porter line, and think there is a connection there also. The Cherokee connection is important to me too, as we were told all our lives we were part Cherokee, but I have been unable to find any proof. Lewis married a Cherokee woman, or at least part Cherokee. I guess you knew that. The Challacombe book on Blackburns states that John Porter Blackburn moved to Texas with three brothers and the family of Edward Rose, the nephew of Gideon Blackburn (my known relative) and that they called each other "cousin". Gideon, if you did not know, established schools for the Cherokee and taught them to spin and to farm among other things, as reading, writing, and about the Bible, of course. 'Ain't' this fun? Hello, Looking for any info on Benjamin R. Blackburn, Wife Martha Jane Hutchinson. Martha might have been born in Georgia. Supposed died in Rockwell Co., Texas in 1905. Benjamin supposed died in Jackson, Tenn in 1905. They had a son name Alonzo H. daughter Martha Ann Lucinda, went by the name Lucinda Blackburn, married in 1896 in Wayne Co., Tenn. So Benjamin might have lived around the Wayne Co., Hardin Co., Giles Co., Area, or any area around there. Thank you for any help you might be able to give. This is my brick wall. R. Gillette [email protected]
Dear Xbelfast, Yes, I see that Sarah is missing from the Brinton book, but she is mentioned in Westmoreland histories, as is her marriage to William Blackburn. My cousin joined the DAR based on the Sarah Matlack Brinton ancestry. I believe Matlack is also an old Quaker name, so I wonder if additional confirmation could be available through Matlack researchers/ I am copying the lists on this for input by other researchers on the omission of Sarah Matlack Brinton from the Brinton book. Good luck !!! Bill Blackburn Mt. Katy, Do you know if they were related to Lewis Blackburn, b abt 1810? He was part Cherokee. I would be interested in copies of the applications. I would be glad to pay copy and postage cost. Hi Linda, I'm sorry that I might have confused you, but blame it on my typing ability or lack of ability. I list the 3rd of 10 children of Ambrose Blackburn, Jr and Frances Jones Halbert as Josiah Hackney Blackburn. Sorry that I named him one place as Joseph Hackney Blackburn. Here is my list of the ten children of Ambrose and Frances: 1. Elizabeth "Betsy" Blackburnl b Oct 29, 1773; f Oct 23, 2847; mar Leonard Tarrant, Jr; 13 children 2. Hi Amy, Do you have access to the Blackburn book by Challacombe? It has a bit about your Samuel, a will is mentioned. The book has a few Rankins, but not Jane or her parents. Just looking at it quickly, it seems to put forth that Benjamine, John, William and Samuel are brothers, and Archibald is an uncle . Does this fit your known facts? It does say Samuel married Eleanor Provine in Chester Co, PA abt 1748, and her sister Ann Provine m Francis McCormick. They were two of the four dau's of Thomas Provine. It also says that Samuel & Eleanor had no children. As Samuel Blackburn & Elinor Province had no children, how could James & Jane Blackburn be cousins? Janes's mother was Hannah Province, a sister of Elinore . It is supposed that James was probably related to Samuel, but that would hardly make him a "blood relation" of Jane. Would it?? According to the Blackburn book by FrancesHilliard, no one had located James parents, but he named his first born Samuel.. James is my 4th Gr. grandfather. Geraldine [email protected]
