And there are many who wanted them to.These ones who wanted them to, didn't care one bit what they called their selves, as long as it was not Native American. Why? Well there were so many stealing and killing NA for their land, that as long as no records showed them to be the rightful NA owners, why would they care? It searved their purpose to take the lands. The KLU KLUX CLAN, was another factor after the war. They needed that cover more then ever, to survive, what our AA brothers and sisters, could not cover.Their was no disguise for most of them. They were hung from trees and burned in their beds.If you really look at the NA and AA, their is a real big difference.Your NA brothers and sisters have the long silky hair, as many whites do. But again, the AA had no way to hide the texture of their hair. It was plain to see, who and what they were.White trappers had been marrying NA woman, long before the slaves were ever free. Though they the NA were not accepted by many, their were others who did accept them.As you say, these marriages took place and the babies were often times white enough to pass.So yes I can agree that maybe some of those familys, sent their children to live among a white world. But it was never the less, out of fear. It was still a cover, to hide who they were. And yes it was kept a secret. But I am now living in the year 2000. And I want to know all my heritage. Now what suits me or anyone else. If I were to find tomorrow that I am NA and AA, I won't have to put out welcome arms to those brothers and sisters, because I have already accepted them as such.I very much like your post, and always have. I am glad you are on the list. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!! 1. Re: [BLACK-DUTCH-AMERICA] from Curtis: Well, now that you mention it . . .
    2. As far as I have been able to trace in my family <and this is all i can attest to is in my family > I first heard the Black Dutch in low whispered tones, and as a Teen and not aloud out of sight I picked up lots of things like look at her(me)she takes after the Black Dutch more then any one of pearls young'ens and girl you better stay out of the sun and wear them sleeves and cover your face with a hat, never got to my brain till I was grown and married and had three children and two was dark and one was white as a Lilly, then I began to ponder and ask questions, to no avail then my grandsons came along and woo dark skin black silky hair and then great grad son came and man I tell you he is more then my husband put a computer in my hands and I haven't Stopped asking, in all this research there is one common thread and that is Native Indian My lines go there every time (i have by passed the Melungon theory on purpose) some family members are coming forward with information my elderly 83 Sister has signed up on the census this year NA with her grown family members, and she has come forward with this much she knows that we are and I am very close to finding the band some things she just does not know and the other elder sister has memory loss, age 87, now as fat as German goes you will have to get with Bright Star and if you are looking for "Proof" then you may as well go back to the Melungeon sites because we don't proclaim Proof on any thing except our own origine, I have to say no to the question on do you have to come from any one part of the country to be Black Dutch now that is a silly question of course not, people are coming forward from all walks of life just like your self and there family's have hornerably told them all there life they were Black Dutch, I can't help but wonder if this is the case with the Melungeons I wonder who will come forward and say My grandmother said I was a melungeon any one over 30 or 40 and can back it up, and understand I am not Putting down these people at all I was just Worndering thats all, May your Waters Run Gentle, With Love Care And Concern, Alece, Little Hawk,

    2. Tari Adams - Manager - Northern Medical Systems
    3. Hello, 'Siyo, I have just signed on to this list in hopes that you might be able to help with my Grandmaws family. First, from the info I have got from my grandmother they " black-dutch-irish'" or black-Irish". I have found some hints of information, my grandmother does not know much, as you know it was kept from her. Names are Stamper, Sears, Anderson, and Brender. They were all from KY. I have found Sears on Cherokee rolls as well as under Black Chickasaws. I know Andersons and Stampers are also aomg the Cherokee. Well, as you know there are many brick walls when dealing with our past so I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or any of these names are familiar. "Yigaguu osaniyu adanvto nigohilvi nasquv utloyasdi nihi" May the Great Spirit's blessings always be with you. Thanks, Wado, Tari

I have passed it on to my Northern list, and I know they will enjoy it as well. One of my family members was a Indentured Servent to William Penn, for passage on his WELCOME SHIP. He recieved 50 acres of land after the indenturment was over.Of couse we all know about the North freeing the slaves. What a forsade that was. They had the children of the free slaves held in Indenturment, while they were fighting in the South. And to add insult to injury, when they returned, the slaves were EQUAL but SEPERATE ??? What a joke. Now that is a subject I would lke to get into soon. You are my equal, but don't drink from a white mans water fountain. Bright Star

Consequently, it meant that our marriage had more than one level. And, it can be said that MANY, MANY marriages with foreign people are for teh "Green Card" and that's it. And that is a survival issue that is difficult for us in our comfortable AMerican lives to understand. >> Curtis, I know exactly were you are coming from with the statment above. I dont know if your wife was a second child, but in China, a second child would be put to death, if the goverment found out. Many famililies sent those 2nd children born to America. It was not for any green card. It was a matter of life and death. You are right. Many ignorant minds, do not take into consideration the trama and circumstance of folks from other countries. Imagine living in a country were they sterilize the woman. Bright Star

"Elsewise," we wouldn't be here discussing it right now! >> Curtis, I agree with alot of what you say. And the statement above says a lot. But there were many other reasons that Black Dutch had to use this term. Bright Star

Only in Appalachia? originating in a certain time-frame? >> Hi Curtis, You do not have to have German ancestry to be Black Dutch. The real Dutch are from Holland. And many German folks, believe that the Dutch are in fact , from their own country. But the truth of the matter is, there was no Germany yet, when the Dutch arrived in America. During the war in Germany, many countries were swallowed up by Germany. When the Germans started their killing of Jews in Germany, there were many other country's peoples killed as well. The poles from Poland and many more. That is not to say that many Black Dutch are not German. Germans with Dutch ancestry married NA as well.Very rarely do we hear NA say they are anything but NA. The same with AA. But that was not that way with the Europeans. Whites will tell you every day, (me for example), I am German, Irish, Dutch, English and I have a Lenape gggg-grandmother.We know why the NA never claimed anything but NA, back in the day. Because they were here first. They were not of mixed heritage as us Europeans are. They became mixed, after we got here. The same for AA. They were Africans, and their ancestry changed after getting here. Bright Star
