Jeg gjentar her en sak som var på den engelske postlisten for BK. Dette som ren orientering og jeg oversetter dette ikke. Betrieve http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Btrieve er den database som ligger til grunn og brukes i BK # fra Wim en Liesbeth Nuijs, Nederland Having installed BK6 on a Vista system as well I read with interest the message of Jim Ramaley dated June, 14. To be able to backup data-files easily, I decided to copy all my BK6-files to my second disk (E:) in a separate directory. It is my opinion, that data-files should not be placed in a sub-directory of "Program Files" at all. However, following the link to pervasive, I read some remarkable if not alarming information about BTRIEVE not being supported on XP nor Vista. I think we should be aware of that and the possible problems that can be the result of it. And I would ask John to give us some information if he is aware of the risks and if he is working at some solution for it. A lot of us will still use older versions of Windows, but sooner or later we all have to migrate, as I had :-( # Svaret fra John Steed, produsenten The version of Btrieve that I use can be made to work with XP or Vista if you have Administrator rights. So in that sense, it is not "supported" since most programs can be set to run without administrator rights. It does work with XP and Vista if you follow certain rules I am working on a new system that would not require Btrieve, so at some time in the future, I will switch. ## Gjengir også meldingen fra Ramsey som det referes til From: "Jim Ramaley" Date: Thu, 14 Jun 2007 10:36:59 -0400 I just spent quite a few hours migrating my BK6 to VISTA and ran into an "interesting" (well, "frustrating & unexpected" is a better description) problem. I'm not sure that I know the complete picture, but here goes. The data structure I use on my XP platform is: C:\Program Files\Brother's Keeper 6\Data where Data has 3 subdirectories: Media; Picture; Text. BK6 is installed in the Brother's Keeper directory. For simplicity I thought I would use the same structure in Vista. So I installed BK into C:\Program Files\Brother's Keeper 6 and then copied the data directory. Much to my surprise, when I opened BK it reported fewer names than I knew I had. I went to my XP and ran a quality check. No problems. So I checked the database statistics on XP and got: People: 42928; Highest number 42942; families 15381; locations 6368; sources 1770; events 109986; other 22359 Back to the Vista machine. Quality check had many problems which basically related to "missing" people; spouse linked to an invalid number; parents not linked to children or vice versa, etc. The database statistics were: People: 42670; Highest number 42684; families 15381; locations 6368; sources 1770; events 109986; other 22359 Notice that only the People count, and the higest number count are off and off by exactly 258. I tried several things in hopes of finding the problem. At the suggestion of my technical guru son (to use a different directory structure), I copied the data from its current location in the "Brother's Keeper 6" directory to a different location: C:\BK6\DATA and then opened BK with this location for the data. This worked! I now had exactly the same statistics as on XP. I do know that Vista has much more security overhead built in -- you can specify privileges down to the specific user -- and the Program Folder appears to have higher security than I expected. In fact, copying the DATA subdirectory required that I (as an administrator) affirm the move. This may have something to do with the problem -- it may be that BTRIEVE has some issues and in fact the company behind BTRIEVE (www.pervasive.com) does have a white paper on compatibility issues. It may also be that BTRIEVE isn't totally happy with the VISTA file management. In any event, when you migrate to VISTA, I strongly urge that, before and after the more, you (a) check the database statistics and (b) run a quality check. Might want to hang on to your old computer too! -- Otto Jørgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NIS2006
