I have handled the problem as follows: Suppose that John Smith (age 7) is shown as the grandson of Samuel Smith (age 57) with Samuel listed as head of household. I enter John as the son of Samuel but instead of calling him just "John Smith" I call him "John (gson) Smith" At a glance it shows that John is not truly the son of Samuel but that there is a close connection. By using (gson) as sort of a middle name, this John Smith will pop up whenever I do a name search -- perhaps at some later time. If I ever find the parents of John I can easily drop the link to Samuel, add the appropriate parent and correct all links. The problem with using something like "adopted", or even "foster", is that, in fact, you have no knowledge that these titles are correct. Any reports involving John show the correct relationship since reports print out the name. You could perhaps link the child to his/her grandparents as being adopted by them, and add a hidden note to that effect.
