Thanks for the suggestions as to how to handle a child who obviously is a grandchild but the parent is not known, which means the sex of the parent is not known. What I really want to do is have the child appear on a line chart linked as the child of the grandparents through a parent named Unknown with sex listed as Unknown. I am puzzled as to why I can't do this because we can add a child listed as Unknown with sex Unknown and he/she will appear on the line chart. How come I can't add a child to Unknown without declaring the sex? John, can you make a tweak to the program - or did you in the new version? - to make this happen? Thanks. Carole
To Carole Caruso The program allows a child with unknown sex, but it does not allow a parent with unknown sex. So you have to pick Male or Female for a person before you can add a child to that person. It has to do with the program wanting a Mother and Father of each child. The marriage record for the parents only has those two choices currently. Rather than have me change the file structure, perhaps you can just call the parent either male or female and then add the child. I realize what you want to do, and if the situation was more common, perhaps I could change the program. However, I think is is rare when you have a grandchild name and the grand parents names and you do not know the sex of the parent. Since it is rare, you can pick male or female and put in a Note that you do not know the name or the sex of that person. Most of the printed reports like Tree charts and Box charts do not say Male or Female to the chart will look the same if the parent is male or female. So people will not be confused by most of the printouts. Your Note will explain the situation if you print a Group sheet with notes.
