    3. To madcitytraveler@yahoo.com Go to the Split database routine. Create a new folder for the new database. Then when it asks which people to select, press the F3 key. It will pop up a message that it will keep the same BK code numbers. Then select the people. Then copy them to the new folder. I tried for a period of time using the Split Database function but that insisted on re-numbering. I asked the question and was given a proceedure that allowed the split but it was an archane command that I wrote down and saved away. Now I need to do it again but I can't find the command string. I guess I put it someplace safe. I am using Windows XP and BK 6.4. Does anyone know how to split without changing the User ID numbers. All of my records use that number to ID the file and it would be weeks of work to change it for every file. Thanks for the help or sympathy. ee proctor Remember - Use the Archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hi All, I have been trying to run BK7 on a memory stick. The program runs no matter which USB port I plug it into, but can only find the data if I plug it into the same port. Does anyone know of a way to get BK7 to look for the data on the memory stick regardless of which port is used? ie, whichever drive the program is run from? Regards, Ray

    3. To Ray Schmidt There is a file BKOPTION.P7 that has some options and also has the name of the most recent data folder. So that file tells BK what drive letter and folder to open. If you move the program and data to a different drive, it will still try to open it on the drive that you used the last time. In other words, when you start BK, it tries to reopen the most recent database. So it does not notice what drive letter the program is on, it just looks at the same BKOPTION.P7 file to know which folder to open. I think I understand what you want, but currently it is not designed to do what you are trying to do. 3. Not directly, Ray. Your BK7 program is fixed on a PC or laptop, Yes? Are you running BK7 program on a memory stik also? How does one make that work? Your database is on a memory stick, Yes? BK7 currently opens the last run database, as does many & gene'y programs. ~ But you are probably using the [Many click} method now to get what you want.!~ Each USB port is mounted as a distinct DRIVE; F:, H:, etc. (1).- BK can look for databases; [Menu Item <File><Utilities><Find BK7 database>] .. Note this is Drive specific again. (2).- You can open specific databases; [Menu Item <File><Recent Databases>] . . See the drive indications. I suspect you will have less than four different USB drive letters, perhaps.... (3).- You can make you own list of databases and choose one of those - drive specific - You need to know which USB port has your stik. [Menu Item <File><Open list of Databases>] As a casual observation Ray, Technology wise, we have moved from Floppies on a single drive on a PC, usually, through the CD technology, on a single drive often, through single & multi USB port DRIVE systems, and now tablets and the like are back to the one USB port with no CD capability. May I suggest you have just the ONE database on one USB stik which is your master. Create a Windows [BATCH File] that looks for a BK file, even make a bogus BK7-Start.TXT file in your data folder. A shortcut will action the batch which reports the drive that it finds your database key, then writes the drive name to the BKOPTION.p7 file at place {e.g.} <- Path =D:\BK7Data\AllData\ ->. Change just the Drive designator to the one your batch file returned. The batch can then start the BK program, all from one shortcut. *-** Hmmmm Perhaps that won't work either! Hmmm... Note that the drive letter applied to Pictures & media will need to be change inside the database, unless you use relative as I do. 1. [BK] Running BK from memory stick
    2. Ray Schmidt
    3. Thanks Barry, I normally run BK on a laptop, but I would like to be able to take a memory stick with me when I travel, plug it into any Windows computer, and run my copy of BK without having to install it there. BK runs quite happily from a memory stick in any drive allocation, but each time I plug it into a different computer, I have to tell BK where to find the data files. I am hopeful that someday, BK will know what directory the executive is running from, and look for the data files in a subdirectory of there.
