I did forget to mention that every pictures in the Picture-folder starts with the BK_number and the nameetc, e.g. 000012_Otto_12-years.jpg -- Otto Jrgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NORTON Bobby, Otto and list: I do not store tomestone pictures within BK, but they are close by. Because many of my ancestors settled in one area of south central Pennsylvania, and no one in my direct lines left the area before me, I have many relatives in the local graveyards. Years ago, I started photographing entire cemeteries, include the church, a lot of landscape shots, road signs, even the outhouses (original toilets). I now have over 50,000 cemetery photos and they are stored separately from BK. I created a “Genealogy” folder in my root directory. In that folder I have sub-folders for BK6, another genie program, Cemeteries, Maps, Census, Obituaries, and a bunch of other stuff. Everything, EVERYTHING that I have concerning genealogy is in that folder. While I back up BK at least daily, I COPY the entire folder to a 16 gig thumb drive regularly. The cemetery sub-folder is right below the BK6 folder. Within the Cemetery folder are folders for each county I have taken pictures in. In those folders are individual folders for each cemetery, containing the photos of that particular cemetery. Each cemetery folder is given a name that consists of the initials of the cemetery; i.e. Buck Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery is B V L. When I shoot a cemetery, I start at the corner nearest the front gate, shooting every stone. I work my way back, walking every row, with a “new row” shot taken as I begin the next row. If there is a family group of stones (common in these old graveyards) then I take pix of the group. I often shoot duplicates to get the shot just right. My photo managing software lets me batch rename the entire shoot. Since the pictures were taken in location order, I rename them all in that order, using the same initials of the cemetery, a dash and 4 numbers. I.e. the pix of Buck Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery are named B V L-0001 through B V L-0750. The photo managing software has a built in database where I add the inscriptions from the stone. It only takes a few clicks to add the appropriate tomestone picture to the person in BK. This way, BK is not cluttered with pix of non-relatives, landscape shots and outhouses (I love outhouses), and these pictures are all stored together, so whenever I want to take a “walk” through a cemetery, I can do so electronically. Cemetery photography has become as big of a hobby for me as genealogy is, so I have put some effort into organizing the pix. Having everything in one “Genealogy” folder has made backups and restorations a breeze, particularly in the event of a total hard-drive crash or just moving to a new computer. One copy command, one paste command, reinstall the genie programs on top of the copy and it is done! Bob... I'm curious, since my photo files are vastly disorganized, what photo managing software do you use? (Some day I'll get my sock drawer sorted, too). Bob Kirk
