Malcolm, Pick out one person then open the GEDCOM file in Notepad and find that person. Are the funny characters in the GEDCOM? If not then it is a problem with Ancestral Author. The descendant and ancestor file have extracted exactly as I wanted except for numerous symbols printed by the side of some ancestors. The symbols are always the same (£Ï_áaƱ). At first I thought these symbols represented where the particular ancestor had a link to an external file on my hard drive but on closer examination this is not always the case. The symbols sometimes appear where there is a link to an internal file and sometimes they do not appear where there is a link to an external file. Does anyone know what these symbols (£Ï_áaƱ) represent and, more importantly, how I can stop them printing in the output? Many thanks.
