Michael, BK is not really designed to do real CD backup. Do yourself a favor and buy a $20 portable USB DVD drive and you'll probably find a free copy of Nero Essentials included. Nero does real CD/DVD burning. BK's backup routine thinks it is writing to a large floppy (remember them;-) drive, so just like floppies it needs to be formatted in advance. Also did you ever try to read a non-MSDOS floppies on your PC? In other words, if you expect to use that backup CD on multiple computers with different operating systems stay away from formatted CD/DVDs. Drive not available. If you have Windows Vista or Windows 7 then go to start, Computer, and Right Click your CD/DVD drive and if there is an option to Format the blank CD/DVD then pick that. I have not heard that a new CDR can be formatted? The format button is greyed out anyhow. It seems to be a "Brother's Keeper 6" report. I have burnt photo files to a CDR, so the DVD rewriter drive seems ok! System. Thank you Jim, That explained it brilliantly. I have just downloaded Nero Essentials, but for my BK backups I will stick to flash drives as I did before. I think after going through the process of changing the data file paths through BK from what they were in XP to now with Win 7 I wanted the most secure backup possible to ensure I did not have to go through it again if something else went wrong on my new Win 7 computer.
