Like others on this list I have been a user since DOS days. I started using/testing BK in 1994 and became a registered user in 1996. It does everything I want it to do in a simple and straightforward way and I am pleased it doesn't have the so-called bells and whistles and glitz of other programmes. I have tested other programmes, particularly RootsMagic, because I was impressed for a while that it could be loaded onto a memory stick; but I soon fell out with that idea. I maintain my database on my desktop computer and have installed the programme onto my laptop and netbook. It is easy to copy the database onto either via a USB stick for travelling. I make a point of never updating my database on anything other than my desktop computer. I still use Microsoft Office 2000 on my desktop and laptop so I have no issues with opening my BK files. However, I have no facility for installing MS 2000 onto my netbook as it has no CD drive installed; I have downloaded OpenOffice onto the netbook (which runs a lite version of VISTA) and can open all my Word and Excel files out of BK with no real problem (every time I click on a Word or Excel file in BK I get a warning asking if I want to allow OpenOffice to amend the files and I say "yes". I never amend the files on the netbook -- I use it merely as a reference tool while visiting archives). So -- BK is wonderful as it is, but I am always grateful for updates and I do download them and keep my programme up-to-date. Like someone said in an earlier post -- if you are happy with the way it is and don't want to change, don't download the updates.
