Here's something that I don't recall seeing discussed - how can I change the description for a flag? -- Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS, AGS, MA Soc. of Mayflower Descendants; Plymouth Co. MA Coordinator for the USGenWeb Project Administrator of https://plymouthcolony.net
To Dale H Cook Go to File, Utilities, Flag a Group of People. It will show existing flags. Click the mouse on some text, and make a change. A button will appear to the right that says "save changes". Click that after you make the change. Everyone that had that flag set will still have it set, but with the new name. John Steed ________________________________ From: Dale H. Because of the twenty character limitation in BK5 for data about events I made use of Chapman County Codes. There are nicely described in a recent Wikipedia article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapman_code This data will be transferred without change into BK6 and BK7, where that limitation doesn't exist. Does anyone know of a simple search and replace procedure to expand the data into a more readbale form?
Ha, let the conundrum pervade! Try in BK6 & BK7 the [Menu item <File><Utilities><Global search & replace>] In my case I have only a few countries of interest In my case I have just a few Counties (or Provinces) to adjust. Eg, for , CBY, NZ. which is a standard type of abbreviation for my twelve NZ provinces, that gets changed to ", Canterbury, New Zealand. You might try an export as Gedcom then re-import to a new BK database. In between, you can use MS-Word or other processor as appropriate to change places such as ", HAM, ENG." To be ", Hampshire, England." The secret here is that I have been consistent with my delimiters and abbreviations. That is not to say that there ARE NOT inconsistencies among my work!! Have you tried Excel (MS-XLS) for your Gedcom editing? Good formulae & macro opportunities there. Save as the text you imported, perhaps with a separate identifier so as not to overwrite the original . Barry P. To Geoffrey L Wilson First be sure you have a current Backup copy of your data. I assume you are talking about the Location or Place field which is after the date of the locations. Try File, Utilities, Global Search and Replace, Change only the Location fields.
