G'day all I just found this article (by BillionGraves, part 1 of 2) outlining the differences between the two cemetary mapping sites. https://blog.billiongraves.com/2019/04/17/what-is-the-difference-between-billiongraves-and-find-a-grave-part-i-researching/ I would be interested to hear if anyone has experiences which refute the BillionGraves claims. I find that there are more graves in Australia listed in BillionGraves than in Find-A-Grave. Steve Boyd Melton, Victoria Australia
I cannot refute what they say since I rarely if ever use them, but if they require a photo and GPS coordinates, that is very good proof, but still limiting for genealogy. I've used Findagrave (and contributed many memorials) so I know that sometimes the family knows where the person is buried, but they are in an unmarked grave. If I know where their grave is, I'll take a photo of the unmarked grave. If I find their burial place in an obit or on a death record, but there is no stone in the cemetery for them, does this mean that person will never be on BillionGraves? I can put them on Findagrave and explain where I found the "proof" information. No gravestone or GPS required. So for me, I guess Findagrave is more flexible. Sometimes a bit too flexible.... Some people do make wild guesses as to grave location, or even add their ancestors merely to have a memorial to link all the kids to, and will say "burial unknown", which is totally usless for a site called FIND A GRAVE. They've turned it into a genealogical site without the required proof. Benefits and drawbacks of each approach.
