I use person's name, and follow that with a unique number. I used to use birth year, but that ran into a mess in one of my early databases, back when the main note size was very limited. I managed to find a one-up numbering system worked much better. It's rare that I have more than 20 individuals with the same name, but I might have 30 notes on those 20. John_Smith_1.txt is still a unique file, and if I am trying to match file to individual, I have to go through them to find which one has that note assigned to him, specifically. I also have a few that are multi-individual notes. For instance, John_Smith_2.txt might apply to three or four generations of those John Smiths, all in successive generations of the same line, or be added to 2-3 of that name in the same generations, usually in different lines. The one note might explain their relationship or lack thereof. Whenever possible, with these later versions, I try to keep my notes within the main note, rather than having an attachment. Still comes in handy in some situations, but it's not as necessary to be as regulated in usage as we once were.
