Given that it's clear from the above that forename and surname are stored separately internally, is there any chance of you introducing a bar (a mullion?) into the basic Name box, to separate it into two boxes? (Possibly four, to allow for prefixes [like Dr. or Lord] and suffixes [like M. B. E., B. Sc., or callsigns], though it might be better to have those as fields in one of the tabs.) Certainly a lot of other places - including, for example, Ancestry - do this. Regards, John -- J. P. Gilliver. To J P Gilliver You say it is clear that forename and surname are stored separately. However, that is not true. The Name field is stored as one field and it is not separated into parts. I intentionally designed the program to have one name field because I used the original version of PAF which required separate fields and I did not like having to press Tab or Enter between every part of every name. I have added separate fields for Last Name or Sort Name or other parts, because for certain names that is needed. Those extra fields are not needed for most names, so it saves time for most people to just enter a one part name field. If you like using [ ] around the last name like BK5 did it, then you can just keep doing it that way. It should still work fine. I added the new Names tab in BK6 because some users in some situations needed more than [ ] could accomplish. In some countries, the Last name is different from the Sort name. So using [ ] did not handle that situation. Also some people wanted to add more than one alternate name, so that is also done on the names tab. John Steed ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. P. Undoubtedly, there will be many views on this subject but it seems to me that the name entered in the 'name field' should be the one by which the child was first known, i.e., since 1837 the one found on the certificate of birth. In the case of adopted children this may be difficult. The use of honorifics (Dr., Sir, etc., or academic qualifications) in this field is surely inappropriate since very few persons are likely to be born with titles. A certain well known entertainer who changed his name by 'deed poll' is still recorded in the birth index under his birth name. If he belonged in my family tree, his new name would be entered as "current name" under the name tab. Harry C Jacobs SUDBURY, ON, Canada

I have BK 6.5.1 (Registered) Is there a method that I can determine from the source list, which individual that particular source is attached to? In my early days I entered too much in the master list. For example 1901 Census for Ontario, Canada I have 28 different listings. I would like to consolidate them to a single listing and show the detail information in the yellow box "Comments for this citation" Thanks Bill MacDonald
To John Bibby Put in the top Name field that name you want printed on most reports. Then click the Names tab in the middle of the screen near Notes, Pictures, Siblings. On the Names tab click Add Name at the bottom. In the first column pick the type of name you are adding and in the Name column put the first and last name that will be the alternate name. Then when you are Searching for a name you can turn on the option to also search for those Alternate names. If Smith Jones is the last name, then put Smith Jones in both the Last Name and Sort Name fields on the Names tab. Then it will treat that like the last name when doing sorting. To FIND someone with a two part name, put [ ] around the name when searching. So search for Charles [Smith Jones] and it will find that person that has Smith Jones in the Last Name field. (In BK5 you would put [ ] up in the Name field at the top, but with BK 6 you put the last name in the Last Name field on the Names tab.) To John Bibby I am working on a routine to help with duplicates in one database. For now, you could make a Copy of that database in a new folder. Then run the new Utility to Compare two databases, and put 50 on the left and 550 on the right and see if it says they are exactly the same. Then press the + + button to move both sides to the next person. At least you will see if they are exactly the same. You probably will not want to copy anyone since you already have everyone on the left. I would like not to have to enter the surname for an alternative name unless it is different, i. e. have BK assume same if only one given (e. g. "John Frost, also known as Jack" - the "Frost" is a given). I've occasionally wondered why John designed BK with just one box for name, rather than one for forename(s) and one for surname(s) [and, thinking about it, ones for prefixes like Dr. and suffixes like honours, qualifications, and callsigns]. Perhaps this would get round all of the things I have raised, though your suggestion of it being possible to indicate which is the preferred forename would still need some indication - maybe the [], thus: forenames: Otto Julian [Chris] surname: Steed (with the [] being omitted if the person used the first one anyway). -- J. It is best to use the name at birth when entering a person's information. If you have unchecked the option "Wife keeps her maiden name" under File of the main screen then Options then the tab Other, the name will be changed to the husband's. You could also add alternate name(s) on the Names tab of the Edit screen and set them to never print. Then, when doing a search, check the "Also search alternate names" on the Find person screen to look for any alternate name you have entered. These will be flagged with an " * " by the birth year in the list. Gilles de C.
